Olentangy High School Band Of Pride Director's Weekly Updates
2008-12-08 11:37 AMGood morning, First let me congratulate all of our students that had performances this past weekend. We had many, MANY student performing all over central Ohio and though I was not able to attend all of the performances, I heard that everyone did an excellent job! Due to a concert conflict at Orange High School on December 8, the OMBA meeting will be held at the Olentangy High School bandroom on Dec. 8 at 7:30. This is an important meeting, with officer nominations and elections. Please make arrangements to be here if you can. There was a typo on the payment schedule for concert band. Many of you caught this, but in case you didn't, first year band members should pay $30, not $36. If you have already paid, you will be reimbursed the $6.00. If you have not paid, please make arrangements to have that taken care of before our first concert on Sunday, December 14. Speaking of which . . . yes it is that time of year again. The OHS concert band will be presenting our annul holiday concert on December 14, at 3:00pm in the OHS theater. Students should plan to arrive at OHS no later than 2:00pm. If your band member has not picked up their concert jacket yet, they should do so ASAP before the concert. In addition to our up coming concert, we have been requested to provide a pep band for the boys home basketball games. This is an informal event, and I do not expect every band member at every performance. We only need about 15-20 students to create a well balanced ensemble. This is also a great time for your student to get some practice if they are thinking about learning an additional instrument (i.e. a saxophone player learning the clarinet, etc.). I have posted sign-up sheets around the band room for the first two events (Tuesday, Dec. 9 @ 6:00pm and Saturday, Dec. 13 @ 4:30pm). Finally, a reminder that Winterguard (Mon & Wed) and Indoor Drumline (Tues & Thur) practices are scheduled this week. They are also hosting their first major event this weekend, their Spin-a-thon and Drum-a-thon. These events are similar to a mini-band camp where they will spend an extended amount of time at the HS learning their competition show and memorizing music and routine. This is also acts as a fund raiser for these students. If you are interested in sponsoring one of these members, please contact them directly. I had mentioned a Jazz Band performance that was to occur this evening, however I did not get confirmation or a return phone call from the event, so I am assuming they have found alternate entertainment. :( 2008-11-19 8:51 AMGood afternoon everyone! Well, marching band is finally over and we can all relax a little bit! :) We have started concert band and are reading though some music for the holiday concert on December 14. Though marching band is over, we still have a few "pep-band" gigs that are coming up: 11/19 @ 6:00pm Max & Erma's Fundraiser at Polaris 11/22 @ 12:00pm Macy's at Polaris (Parade-in-a-Box) - we just got this gig and I don't have any details yet 12/6 @ 12:00pm Winterfair (small Jazz Ensemble) 12/8 @ ? Women's Club in Powell (Jazz Band) Dont forget that we have our Max & Erma's Fundraiser today. Your student should have brought home two flyers for family and friends to help out the band. Just come and eat (lunch, dinner, or carry out) and 20% of your sale will come back to the band. I have attached a copy of the flyer just in case you would like to share it with additional people. :) Fat Rabbit Racing has asked the music boosters to supply volunteers to work a race at Polaris Fashion Place on Thanksgiving Day from 7:30am - 11am. I believe it will again be in support of the Luke Billings Foundation which benefits children with Cerebral Palsy. This will be a 4 mile race around the mall. If you are interested in helping, please email Norma Johnson at normaj@acornfarms.com. I will provide more details to those of you who contact me. Thank you for your continued support of our music programs! 2008-11-07 2:50 PMJust a couple of quick reminders: Monday, November 10 6:00-7:00pm Butter Braid Pickup 7:30-9:00pm Music Booster Meeting Tuesday, November 11 6:00pm Students arrive 7:00-8:30pm Marching Band Concert 5:00-9:00pm Shane's Fundraiser (have dinner there!) Let me know if you have any questions. I'll have more things for everyone next week! :) 2008-10-31 9:49 AMGood morning, Just following up with a few details: Friday - Football Play-offs @ Sylvanian Northview We do have charter buses for the game tonight! :) I still have a few seats (about 5) available on the bus if you would like to ride along and help out with the front ensemble. We will depart OHS at 3:30pm but we will not be taking the band truck on this trip. There is plenty of space in the cargo hold of the buses for all of our equipment and instruments. Some additional care will need to be taken with the front ensemble equipment but not a major issue. It looks like the weather will be dry and warmer than the past few days! :) 3:30pm Depart OHS for Sylvanian Northview Stadium 5:30pm Meal Stop (around Perrysburg) 6:30pm Resume Trip 7:00pm Arrive at Sylvanian Northview Stadium 7:30pm Kick-Off 12:30pm Arrive at OHS Saturday - OMEA State Competition This is the final schedule for Saturday's contest at Dublin Coffman High School. I encourage everyone (mom, dad, grandparents, neighbors, etc.) to come to this event and CHEER LOUD for OHS! This is the closest event that we've had this year and a great opportunity to see what your child has been up to at all those long band practices!!!! :) Admission is only $7 for adults and $5 for students and seniors. 9:30am Colorguard arrives at OHS 10:15am Winds and Percussion arrive at OHS 10:30am Run-through on the field (bibs, shoes, hats) 11:45am Load equipment and buses 12:00pm Depart OHS (in full uniform) 12:30pm Arrive at Dublin Coffman HS 1:00pm Physical Warm-Up 1:30pm Music Warm-Up 2:15pm Move to Ready-Line 2:30pm At gate 2:45pm Performance 3:00pm Awards Sunday - OYAA Playoff Games at Shanahan We will not be working the concessions for this playoff event. If you (or your student) have signed up to work this event, please enjoy your afternoon off!! :) If you have questions, please feel free to call or email. 2008-10-27 5:57 PMGood morning parents, Well we have a busy week ahead of us. I will try and hit as many things as I can in this email. Please expect an additional email later this week as some details are not yet finalized. I am currently getting quotes for charter buses for this game. 3:30pm Depart OHS for Sylvanian North Stadium 4:30pm Meal Stop 5:30pm Resume Trip 6:30pm Arrive at Sylvanian North Stadium 7:30pm Kick-Off 1:00pm Arrive at OHS Saturday - OMEA State Competition This is our tentative schedule for Saturday. This is a long day and it would be most beneficial to staff the concession stand in shifts of about one hour. More information will come later this week about signing up for this event. Just a reminder, this is EXTRA income for the music department. Income from playoff games are not factored into our budgets and help give the "extras" to our programs that we have come to expect. Please find an hour somewhere in your Sunday afternoon to pitch in and give us a hand. :) Pit Crew and Parent Volunteers If you are available to help with the front ensemble equipment on Friday and/or Saturday we could use the additional help. We will have limited seating on charter buses (around 13 extras seats for adult volunteers). Please let me know if you plan on helping out on Friday night so I can ensure that you have a seat available. No need to sign-up for Saturday though. Just show up at OHS around noon and we will find something for you to do! :) We will need about 10 adults to help move sideline equipment this day. Indoor Drumlin and Winter Guard There will be an informational meeting for all students interested in 2008-2009 Winter Guard or Indoor Drumline programs on Tuesday November 4 at 7:00 pm. This meeting is for all student and parents. Indoor Drumlin and Winter Guard is open to all students who are part of the OHS band program. You do not need to currently need to be a percussionist or guard member to participate. If you are unable to attend the meeting, please contact Mr. Bell (brian_bell@olentangy.k12.oh.us) or Mrs. Brun (clwiksten@yahoo.com) before the meeting to ensure that you get the needed information. Visit www.olentangypercussion.com to find more information about the indoor drumlin show, "Drum Hero" and for sound samples (will be uploaded Wednesday morning). 2008-10-15 12:37 PMGood morning parents! I have a lot of stuff for you again this week. Please read the information carefully. Butter Braid Fundraiser All Butter Braid orders are due back no later than Wednesday, October 15. Additional Items for Friday Dinners Your band members should have received information about additional items that we need to continue to feed our members on Friday nights. The Friday night dinners have become an integral part of our program and we appreciate all of your generous donations! Your student should bring those items in and place them in the band "loft." We will need them this Friday. :) Senior Night This Friday's game is at home against Westerville South and is also SENIOR NIGHT! :) Pre-game activities will be a little hectic with all of the seniors and their parents being announced and walking across the field. If you are the parent of a senior band member, please ask them if they have filled out the appropriate forms for the announcer. We are missing a couple and are trying to track them down throughout the week. Pit Crew If you are available to help with the front ensemble equipment on Friday and/or Saturday we could use the additional help. No need to sign-up, just show up on Friday night around 4:30pm and we will find something for you to do! :) Brunswick Contest We do have contest on Saturday, October 18 at Brunswick High School. Below is a tentative agenda for the day. I have included the performance times for a few of the other AA bands that you should plan to watch. :) Students should plan to eat an early lunch before rehearsal, we will have a meal stop on the way to Brunswick (this will not be a fancy meal, just fast food) and they will have time to eat at the contest sight after our performance (around 7:30pm). Students may also bring snacks with them, however, they are not allowed to eat them on the bus (this is a district rule). Admission is $5 for adults and $4 for students and seniors. 11:00am Rehearsal on the field at OHS 12:30pm Load truck 1:00pm Depart OHS 2:30pm Stop for meal 3:30pm Load buses and depart meal stop 5:00pm Arrive at Brunswick HS 5:30pm Physical Warm-Up 6:00pm Musical Warm-Up 6:45pm Olentangy at Gate 7:00pm Olentangy Performance 7:15pm Amherst Steele HS 7:30pm Willoughby HS 7:45pm Medina HS 8:00pm Judges Break 8:15pm Brunswick HS 8:30pm Awards 9:00pm Depart Brunswick HS 11:00pm Arrive at OHS OMEA State Marching Band Contest Our OMEA State Performance will be on November 1, at 2:45pm. We are currently the last AA band to perform (a good place to be). This schedule COULD change depending on how many additional bands qualify and what their final schedule looks like. Right now, our performance block looks great! We're the only AA band in the block! :) That doesn't mean that the other bands are slackers ... we all got there the same way! If you have questions please feel free to call or email me. 2008-10-08 9:27 AMGood morning parents! I have a lot of stuff for you this week. Please read the information carefully. Butter Braid Fundraiser I still have Butter Braid order forms for any student that would like one. This is one of our biggest brochure sale fundraisers and a great way to have some extra "fun food" around the house. :) Please be aware that all monies received from this sale go directly to your student's individual account (which can be used to offset the cost of future trips, band camp, etc.). Any money earned by seniors that choose to sell items will go into the general band fund to help any students that are in need in the future. All orders are due back no later than Wednesday, October 15. OMEA State Marching Band Contest I was asked to explain why there are two different "championship" dates listed on our schedule. This year we were planning to enter into a different competition circuit (Mid-States Band Association or MSBA). This circuit grades the band on a different scale and places more emphasis on total quality of a marching program. In the OMEA circuit we have already qualified for State Contest. For MSBA, all you have to do is compete in at least one MSBA competition (they are all double elimination events, much like Keynotes Competitions). The only competition that we were able to schedule was at Kings HS, and unfortunately we did not make it to that event (so we can not participate in the MSBA Championship). As a result, I was able to get our OMEA State Performance on November 1, at 2:45pm. We are currently the last AA band to perform (a good place to be). This schedule COULD change depending on how many additional bands qualify and what their final schedule looks like. OMEA District 10 Honors Band Information I have received honor band information. If your music student is interested in auditioning for this ensemble, please have them contact me ASAP. All recorded material must be returned to me no later than Monday, October 13. Students will be notified by November 7 if they have made the ensemble. See attached letter for additional information. Mandatory Rehearsal: Tuesday, December 2 6:30 - 8:30pm Rehearsal and Concert Saturday, December 6 All day Concessions We are still in need for a few concession workers for Thursday, October 9 (yes that is TOMORROW). I currently have one student signed up to work and we really need about 7 people total (2 or 3 adults). Please go to mysignup.com to sign-up to work this event. (bandconcessions@insight.rr.com is the list you are looking for). Band Truck I have received another curve ball with the band truck. Since the truck has an air brake system, we are required to have a Class B CDL with an air brake endorsement in order to drive it. I have contacted a couple of people that have these credentials and they are willing to help out when their schedules permit. Currently I have a need for a driver for the Brunswick contest on Saturday October 18, Westerville North game on October 24, and OMEA State Contest on November 1. If you have these credentials and are willing to drive on one (or more) of those dates, please contact me as soon as possible. Pit Crew If you are available to help with the front ensemble equipment on Friday and/or Saturday we could use the additional help. No need to sign-up, just show up on Friday night around 4:30pm and we will find something for you to do! :) Theft in the Band Room Unfortunately there was a theft in the band room during our Tuesday afternoon rehearsal this week. Please have your students double check their personal items and make sure that they did not have anything stolen. I do not have a lot of details at this time, but we are investigating the matter. Until things are resolved, I encourage all students to keep their personal items locked up either in their school locker or in their band locker. For their protection, please do not leave purses, wallets, ipods, etc., out in the open. Additional Items for Friday Dinners Your band members should have received information about additional items that we need to continue to feed our members on Friday nights. The Friday night dinners have become an integral part of our program and we appreciate all of your generous donations! Your student can start bringing those items in this week and place them in the band "loft." Shane's Rib Shack Fundraiser Just a reminder that we have our monthly Shane's Rib Shack Fundraiser on October 14. Please plan to spread the word and bring the family for dinner that night. Teays Valley Contest We do have contest on Saturday, October 11 at Teays Valley High School. Below is a tentative agenda for the day. I have included the performance times for a few of the other AA bands that you should plan to watch. :) Students should plan to eat an early dinner before rehearsal and they will have time to eat at the contest sight after our performance (around 8:30pm). Students may also bring snacks with them, however, they are not allowed to eat them on the bus (this is a district rule). Total collected was $16,300.00. 93 different routes were taken and 14 of these routes collected over $300.00! Congratulations to everyone involved! Butter Braid Fundraiser I just received the Butter Braid order forms today and students are welcome to take them today. This is one of our biggest brochure sale fundraisers and a great way to have some extra "fun food" around the house. :) Please be aware that all monies received from this sale go directly to your student's individual account (which can be used to offset the cost of future trips, band camp, etc.). The Friday night dinners have become an integral part of our program and we appreciate all of your generous donations! Homecoming Weekend Well, this is Homecoming weekend AND MS band night at OHS! This is going to be a fun filled and exciting evening for everyone. With the additional MS students, it would be great to have a few additional OHS chaperones just to make sure that everything is covered. I have listed below, our modified rehearsal schedule for Friday. 2:35 Dismissal from school and move to Shanahan 3:00 Rehearsal in Shanahan Stadium 5:00 Dinner in Shanahan Cafe 5:30 Homecoming "Parade" from Shanahan to OHS 6:00 Students dress for the game 6:30 Warm-up and Stand Tunes 7:00 March to the field 7:15 Pre-Game (where we will unveil our new arrangement of the Alma Mater) 7:30 Kick-off 10:00 Post-Game performance of our Contest Show Shane's Rib Shack Fundraiser Just a reminder that we have our monthly Shane's Rib Shack Fundraiser on October 14. Contest Results Hooray! We finally have some great news to report! The band received a SUPERIOR rating at contest in Pickerington this past Saturday. This rating qualifies us to perform at the OMEA State Competition! This is the first time the band has qualified for State at their first contest is almost 10 years! This is a great time to celebrate our accomplishments! Friday Night Dinners We are half way though the regular season and we are looking at a play off spot if things keep going the way they are. Ms. Weimer (any many others) have done an excellet job feeding our kids over the last five weeks. I know that many kids have said that they "forgot" to bring in their dinner supplies (soda, condiments, etc.). If we could get those supplies in ASAP we will be able to better assess what we will need in our second round of donations. Pride Day Pride Day is coming! (What is Pride Day? See the attachment or copy below) The date is Sat. Sept. 27 from 8:30 a.m. - 12:00 p.m starting at Orange High School. Football Game We have our first away football game in 3 weeks this Friday against Marysville. The weather finally looks dry and this should be another great game and another chance to see 3/4 of our contest show. The good news is that other than a blown tire, the gator has escaped major injury. The bad news is that with limited transportation, we will need MANY people (at least 12) to help move and set up our borrowed sideline equipment. Marching Band Contest We do have contest on Saturday at Pickerington Central High School (Central Varsity Stadium located at Ridgeview JH - 130 Hill Road South 43147). Below is a tentative agenda for the day. I have included the performance times for a few of the AA bands that you should plan to watch. :) Students should plan to eat an early dinner before rehearsal and they will have time to eat at the contest sight after our performance. 3:45 Arrive at OHS 4:00 March Rehearsal and March through on the field 5:30 Double check all equipment is loaded 6:00 Depart OHS 7:00 Band Arrivals at PCHS 7:30 Physical Warm-Up 8:00 Newark Performance 8:05 Music Warm-Up 8:15 Westerville Central Performance 8:30 Travel to Ready Line 8:30 Franklin Heights Performance 8:45 Band Report Time 8:45 Reynoldsburg Performance 9:00 Olentangy Performance 9:15 Pickerington North Performance 9:30 Pickerington Central Performance 10:00 Awards Ceremony 10:30 Depart Pickerington Central HS 11:30 Arrive at OHS Pep-Band Volleyball Performance The marching band has been asked to perform at the OHS volleyball's Breast Cancer Research fundraiser next Thursday, September 25 from 6:30-8:30pm There will be a crowd of a few hundred fans and it supports a great cause. We will only need a pep band of about 25-30 people. Two people on each part will be a great start and we can fill in from there. I would especially like to see officer and section leaders at this event. Pride Day Pride Day is coming! (What is Pride Day? See the attachment or copy below) The date is Sat. Sept. 27 from 8:30 a.m. - 12:00 p.m starting at Orange High School. This is a mandatory fundraising event for all students in band, orchestra and all choirs from both high schools (OHS and OOHS). We still need more parent/grandparent/adult drivers. Reply to your director if you can drive. Please note the option to donate now and request employer matching gift amounts. Thank you for your time. Saturday, September 27, 2008 8:30 a.m. - 12:00 p.m. Pride Day is a time where students in all of the OHS and OOHS music groups go out into our community to solicit donations for the Music Boosters Program. It is the largest fund-raiser that takes place in the shortest amount of time. This years goal is $15,000. 75% of each directors music budget is provided by Music Boosters. The bulk of the money is used to buy and maintain equipment, purchase music and cover the cost of contest fees and transportation to events. All music students are required to participate. Parent volunteers are needed to drive/supervise the students as they walk through neighborhoods. Schedule for Pride Day 8:30 a.m. All students report to the Orange High School auditorium wearing their designated uniform 8:30 - 9:00 a.m. Student Training, formation of 4-person teams and route assignments 9:00 - 11:45 a.m. Students and Drivers canvass assigned neighborhoods 11:45 - 12:00 p.m. All volunteers return for a hotdog/chips lunch TOP SELLER PRIZES!!!! For fun, each student in the top 2 groups of 4 that collect the most money will receive the following: 1st Place and 2nd Place: Movie Pass to RAVE Theater Got Questions? Contact Diane Saupe at 614-309-5791/dmsaupe4@gmail.com Concessions We are in need of some concession workers for tomorrow the 18th, Saturday the 20th, and next Thursday the 25th. If you can help, please go to Mysignup.com and sign-up for a time. 2008-09-09 2:32 PMGood Afternoon Parents! Well, needless to say, the band had an exciting weekend. Below is an excerpt from Mr. McDonnell's statement about this event: "On the way to this competition, a trailer that was being pulled behind the large blue band truck, broke free from the truck. The trailer proceeded to roll across the 71 median, and struck a vehicle traveling the opposite direction. A semi was also involved in this accident, and traffic was backed up for a couple of miles. Most unfortunate was the fact that a person had to be life-flighted from the accident, and was/is receiving medical attention. I have not received an update as to this person's condition. Luckily, none of our students, parents, or band staff was injured in this accident. We did, however, lose some instruments and equipment in the accident. Please keep all involved in your thoughts." With that being said, we will most likely need some additional help this Friday to move equipment (since the Gator is out of commission at this time) and to work in the concession stand. If you have never worked in the concession stand before, this is a great opportunity to get to know some of the other band parents and to help generate some revenue as well. It's not hard work, "here's your hot dog, that'll be a buck fifty." :) Please visit www.mysignup.com to sign up for this Friday nights game. It's never too early to be looking ahead . . . next weeks football game is in Marysville and we have contest on the following Saturday in Pickerington. This will be our first away game and contest without the gator or trailer. This may potentially be It's the second Tuesday of the month and that means it's time to eat at Shane's Rib Shack! Attached is a flyer explaining the fundraiser happening for the band tonight at Shane's. If you are planning on going out to eat or ordering take-out tonight, please consider stopping by Shane's and supporting our band program. If you are interested in purchasing an "Elements" show shirt the cost will be $8.50 for S-XL and $10.00 for 2XL (student's shirts are already paid for). The deadline to order is 9/14/08 and we expect that they will be available the following Friday. To order, please email Pam Boyce at: showyourspirit@verizon.net. Members and friends of the band are invited to set up for automated downloads of performances. The podcast page has links to add the feed to any standard news reader and is fully iTunes compatible. You can go to the 'Performance Videos' page from the website, or just bookmark http://www.olentangyband.com/ohsmb/podcast More detailed instructions are displayed on the site. The band ID and Password are needed to access all media on the server. 2008-09-17 6:02 PMGood morning parents, Well, another exciting week here at OHS! :) I hope everyone has power back on and is enjoying the "good life" again. We will be in full uniform tomorrow so please make sure that your band member brings their hats, black marching shoes, black socks, cool comfortable clothes to wear under their uniform (DARK t-shirt is needed), and $$$ for dinner at the contest. There is the possibility of rain, so a change of clothes and/or rain gear may be appropriate. Since the bus ride will be over the lunch hour and we will not have dinner until after 4:30pm, I would recommend a healthy breakfast/lunch for everyone. Contest Admission ANY NUMBER OF PIT PARENTS will be able to help move your band/props on and off the field for your performance. However, if they wish to view other bands performing (sit in the stands) they will be required to have a wristband. PIT PARENTS will NOT be stamped. Bus drivers will be provided with a wristband for admittance into the competition. [Mr. Brun will provide as many free admissions for pit parents as he can - probably 7] General admission for our competition will be $7.00 for everyone. Lewis Center, Ohio 43035 (O) 740-657-4171 (F) 740-657-4199 ian_brun@olentangy.k12.oh.us 9/2/2008 6:03 PMGood Afternoon Parents, Well this is a big week for the band. We have our second home game this week against Big Walnut and we have MSBA contest at Kings High School near Cincinnati (King Mill). During half time we will present part of our contest show. It's going to be an exciting week and I hope everyone is able to attend this weekend. Just a reminder that the band does supply your band member with their first pair of gloves. After that, they will need to purchase gloves at $3.00 a pair. I have received a number of phone calls and email about the Delaware Horse Parade. I had it on the schedule in case they called. In the past, we rotated years with LHS. Since, this is their year to march the parade and we have not been contacted, I have dropped it from the schedule. :) A big thank you to everyone that attended Curriculum Night last week. It was great to see and talk to everyone that was there. As was mentioned, due to some conflicts throughout the school year, a few dates have changed on the tentative calendar. I have attached the full calendar in PDF format and it is also listed at the bottom of this email. If you have not yet used the new web site to sign up for concessions, it's VERY easy. www.mysignup.com is the site and you will just need to login with bandconcessions@insight.rr.com. The site will list all the events that we are responsible for and who can work them (adults or students), and who has already signed up. Please take a few moments and surf over to the site and sign up for a couple of events. I have attached a few documents to this email. One of them is about a fundraiser that Macy's is sponsoring. Basically, we will be selling a 20% coupon for 5 dollars. This is a 100% profit fundraiser! We can't ask for anything more than that! :) Another document is the OMBA meeting minutes from August. I believe that I am officially caught up on email! YAY! If you have questions, I should be able to get back with you in a reasonable amount of time now. One of my goals is to get better at the weekly emails since I feel this is the best way to get information home to you. However, I don't want to overload any of you with multiple email throughout the week. If you have information that you would like me to send out on the mailing list, please have it to me no later than noon on Monday. If received after noon, it will go on the next weeks email. Our last summer rehearsal will be Tuesday from 5:00pm - 7:00pm and then we start our regular school day rehearsals on Wednesday. This Friday is our first football game of the season and will be against Thomas-Worthington. It's a short drive so please come support the band and our team! Just a reminder that all band (and colorguard) members need to stay after school on Friday for rehearlsal and dinner. After dinner we will get equipment ready, load the buses, and head down to TW. We should arrive around 7:00pm with a return time at OHS around 10:30pm or 11:00pm. We will have kids call you when we are about 15 minutes from the high school. Please make arrangements to pick your band member up in a reasonable amount of time following our return to OHS (around 30 minutes). We are still in need of help in the concessions stand. Sign-up sheets are in the band room. Without your help (especially Freshman and Sophomore parents) we cannot staff the concessions stand. Without concession stand proceeds we cannot fund the band program. This is the biggest fundrasier available to us! Lewis Center, Ohio 43035 (O) 740-657-4171 (F) 740-657-4199 ian_brun@olentangy.k12.oh.us ************************************************************************ Dear Band Parents, Because of the split with Orange High School this year, our budget for Friday band dinners is less than we hoped for. In order to provide a hearty meal, as we have in the past, we need your help. Instead of asking for a cash donation, we are asking that every student bring a specific item to help defray the cost of the dinners. Each request was designed to be under $5.00. We hope to only ask for donations twice this season. Your student will be assigned the item needed from them at practice on Thursday 14th. We are asking that donations be brought to the band room by Tuesday 19th practice, so that we will have what we need for our first meal Friday 22nd. Please put the students name on the donation so that we may keep track of who has participated. This must be a group effort to work the best. After the third or fourth game, we will call for the second round of donations to finish the season. Thank you in advance for your help!! Cheryl Wimer *************************************************************************** Hi everyone. We will be holding another car wash at Drug Mart on Saturday the ninth. It will go from 9-1. We are looking for student volunteers and a couple of Adults. Mike Moore will be in charge. michaelcmoore@insight.rr.com Please contact him and let him know you can be there. This is also the day for the cleanup at the concession stand. That begins at 9 am. Please we need everyones support. Let's get this year rolling. Thanks to all. Ellen All Directors, September 27th (8AM-Noon) was selected at this weeks Booster meeting for our annual Pride Day. Please start notifying parents and students as soon as possible. The plan is to meet at Orange Auditorium for the pre meeting and return to Orange Band Room after collecting. Pride Day is our annual fund drive where the music program students go out into the community requesting donations. Please let me know if you have any questions. Thanks Joe Taylor President, Olentangy Music Booster Association, Inc. 7/21/2008 12:52 PMGood morning Parents, This email has a lot of information about our up coming mini-camps and band camp. Please read through the handbook that is attached to this email (no need to print the entire book). You may want to print the forms at the end of the handbook, fill them out, and send them with your band member to the mini-camps. Please read the two emails attached to the end of this one. We still need student and adult help with the Drugmart car wash on July 29 and we are still in need of chaperons for band camp! Please reference the end of this email for important dates and times for the upcoming months. Monday, July 28 through Friday, August 1 All Rookies (any one new to the OHS band program) should report to the band room by 8:00am. Members should wear cool comfortable clothing, white socks, and tennis shoes. A water bottle and sun block would also be appropriate since we will be spending part of our time outside in the sun. During this time, we will be learning the Olentangy marching style, playing style, and most importantly, how to combine the two. All section leaders, field commanders, and officers should report to the band room by 8:00am. The leadership team should wear cool comfortable clothing, white socks, and tennis shoes. A water bottle and sun block would also be appropriate since we will be spending part of our time outside in the sun. We will be working with the leaders on how to lead their sections, teach drill moves, correct posture and marching errors, and generally be a positive role model. Leaders should come prepared to learn a little and teach a lot! A tennis ball is a great tool to have on hand for demonstrating various heel and toe placements. Colorguard and Percussion members should report to the band room by 8:00am. Members should wear cool comfortable clothing, white socks, and tennis shoes. A water bottle and sun block would also be appropriate since we will be spending part of our time outside in the sun. Make sure you have any additional equipment (as specified by your instructor) that you will need to learn show music, cadences, and marching techniques. Members should pack a lunch and dinner will be provided. Field Commanders will already be at OHS for leadership camp, however you will stay for FC clinics afterwards and should also pack a lunch. FC's need to bring a 1" 3 ring binder with around 100 plastic sheet protectors to hold show music and drill charts. We will break down FC responsibilities, how to help individuals and sections, how to read a musical score, proper conducting technique and basic patterns. Dinner will be provided. All band members should report to the band room by 5:00pm. Members should wear cool comfortable clothing, white socks, and tennis shoes (no sandals or flip-flops). A water bottle and sun block would also be appropriate since we will be spending part of our time outside in the sun. We will spend half of rehearsal distributing and rehearsing show and stand music, and the other half outside reviewing marching techniques and basic drill moves. We will also start working on pre-game at this time. Sunday, August 3 through Friday, August 8 All members should plan to arrive at the Heartland Retreat Center between 2pm and 3pm to register at camp, move their belongings into their room, and prepare for dinner. :) The $300.00 band camp fee must be paid in full before members will be allowed to move in to their room. You may pay the fee anytime between July 28 and August 3. You will be receiving more information about band camp very soon. TRECA, our internet and email provider will be "migrating the server infrastructure" from July 22 through July 28. This means that our email server will not be accessible during the majority of that time. There is the potential for some email to "get lost" during this transition. If you have questions please refer to the band web site before sending email. You may call the band office at 740-657-4171 however the band room will be closed for cleaning until Wednesday, July 23rd. If you are still in need of a summer uniform (blue band polo shirt, khaki shorts, white shoes and socks (shoes and socks are not available through Egelhoff's)), please contact Egelhoff's Sport Shop ASAP. 614-436-5700 They usually have a good stock of shirts and shorts, but call before you drive out there and confirm sizes. We have also found a supply of our summer uniform shorts in the band room. These are available for the same price through the music boosters. OHS Band Camp Sunday, August 3-8 -------------------------------------- Good morning everyone! I am sending this out to ask for your help. I don't believe the e-mail about the triathlon got forwarded to any band members. I don't know if Mr. Brun is out of town, or what, but I don't have access to all of the e-mail addresses. Therefore, I am 4 volunteers short for Saturday, 7/19, and 10 volunteers short for Sunday, 7/20. Does anyone knows of music boosters who would be interested in working with us? If so, could you please ask them to contact me? I would REALLY appreciate it. They can call me at 740-549-0693 (home) or 614-208-2922 (cell) or e-mail me at normaj@acornfarms.com. Students should plan to arrive between 4:30-5:00pm. We will start by assigning needed school owned instruments and distributing parade music. After we rehearse music inside for about an hour, we will move outside for marching rehearsal. This will be a good time for new students to get acquainted with marching and playing. I have attached a copy of the parade letter from Orange Twp. Please refer to this for additional information. Parents should plan to drop your students off at the parade no later than 9:30am on July 4th. This will give us just enough time to set our parade block, warm-up, and step-off in the parade. There's a lot going on and only a little time before the season gets underway, so I'll get right to it. I have listed important dates at the end of this email, and I will do my best with keeping new or changed information in RED. If you have emailed me anytime over the past three weeks, I apologize for not getting back to you. I am slowly getting caught up on email and will get back to you before the end of the week. We will be marching in the Orange Twp. 4th of July Parade again this year. We were tentatively registered for the Upper Arlington Parade, but canceled that event when I found out that the Orange Parade was NOT canceled. I have received a number of email (and text messages) asking if the July 4th parade is a required event. Attendance is expected at all events listed on the band calendar beginning July 1. We worked hard to clear as many events from the summer schedule as possible, so any events that are listed on the schedule are important to the band, OHS, and the community. I realize that some of you have family vacations planned during July 4th. While I don't expect you to cancel your plans, if there is any way for your student to participate in the parade, it would be greatly appreciated (we should be finished by noon). If you are signed up for band class at OHS, you are already registered for band camp. Though the camp fee of $300 is not due until August 3, we will take your payment as early as July 1 at rehearsal (please come early to make payments or send them with your student). We will not be participating in the Ohio State Fair Parade this year. After many conversations with their parade director, the only day they had available was August 8, the day we come home from band camp. I declined this performance opportunity. :) I am still working on a performance at the Columbus Zoo. More information will come if I am able to work things out. If you have questions, please feel free to call or email. Email is typically the best way to get a hold of me, but I will return phone calls when I am able. If you know someone who is not receiving weekly updates, please have them contact me and I will add them to the list. Tuesday, July 1 - 5-7pm - Orange Twp.
