6/6/2008 9:02 PM
Thank you very much for the great turnout last night. I was amazed how many alums and/or their parents came. I was also amazed that I remembered ALL their names, even though it may have taken a few moments.
A special thanks to Mrs. Fox & Mrs Shaw and their "crew" for all the work and effort they expended on this as well as the cleaning up.
Thanks to the the music boosters for the food (way too much!) and to the students for the letter jacket.
I planned to wear it at the "Crew game" in September, but it may be too warm for that...but I will wear it to a game the 2008 season.
I am excited to see where my life goes from here on, but also, maybe more exciting is to watch how far the band will progress both this season and seasons to come. Believe me, we (all the alumni and I) will be watching!! So do us and the community proud - I know you will!
Stay cool this summer - looks like it's gonna be a HOT one!...and please pass this message on to the Orange people as well as the 2008 graduates - I have removed them from the list (for Mr. Brun for next (this new) year.
See you!!!
Mike Lutz

Good Monday Morning,
Seniors: This is your last one!! Congratulations and God Speed in you future endeavors. As I stated last Thursday, yours is the class that got us to State MB finals a second time in a row, Cb ad SB for the first time in 5 years, both bands at state for only the second time ever, straight ones at State,...the list goes on. You have certainly set the bar up a couple notches higher than any class has, soooo JUNIORS - it's all your in three days!
We are in the throes of exams, final grades, and getting ready for next year. I also have the "dubious" pleasure of packing up stuff from the last 19 years here at OHS. In all honesty, most of it is going in the trash - who wants to keep used staff paper, old socks, and other items too disgusting or inane to list here. For those who have seen my office(storage room) you would be amazed! you can see the desk, and it seems larger than before!
Other than already having their lockers cleaned out by now, the only thing going on the the month of June (for OHS people) is the reception on June 5 (Thursday) from 6:30 to 8:30. I really hope you and your student can attend, if even for only a few minutes. It will be a great time to reminisce and just hang out. I'm really looking forward to it. There is more information on the band website - olentangyband.com
Orange students (and parents) - I am impressed that you are at least giving this new director and concept a try. This could have very easily gone very bad (ie: 25 students total), but you have made it 2x that !!! I WILL be around this fall to keep an eye on youse guys! BTW, this is also your last e-mail...If you continue to receive e-mails, please e-mail Mr. Brun.
OHS band members - you have a great director and staff taking over, so you have no excuse to not just meet this year's accomplishments, but to exceed them. Give the new staff a chance, and that will happen!
To all the parents - Thank you for your time and support. It has been a great 19 years, and understand, the reason for my retiring now is not because of any one thing, or student (LOL), but because it is time. I know God has something planned for me, I just don't know what that is right now. And that is both scary and exciting.
May God bless you and yours,
Mike Lutz

Good Friday Afternoon Parents:
Last night was great - great food, good company, and awards! What can be better?! Just wanted to bring you up to date on a couple things:
1. Graduation Band - there is a bus going to the fairgrounds (state, not county) leaving at 9 am - be there between 8:30 and 9. This is not mandatory, just being offered in lieu of parking passes. Return app 2 pm, or a little before.
2. We are in need of people to step up...I alluded to it last night, and here is your opportunity. PLEASE read all the below and think on it.
Have a great weekend, and best of luck to our graduates!
M Lutz
I realize everyone is very busy with the school year coming to a close, but the OMBA program needs help. Outdoor Concessions are our largest and most important fundraising with Gross Income over $80,000 this past fiscal year. As you may or may not know the Concessions Co-Chairs stepped down this year after 18 months of service. I want to again thank Cheryl Wimer and Cheryl Shaw for doing a great job. This means we now have twice as many opportunities for you to make a huge difference for the Directors and our music programs. The OMBA now needs Co-Chairs for both Orange and Olentangy. Below is a listing of the concession volunteer opportunities. Manuals have been created with equipment usage, directions, and job descriptions. Please keep in mind the OMBA Officers and concession veterans are still part of the organization and available for support. Please feel free to contact any of the board members with questions.

Parents:
I forgot two things (in addition to the two things earlier!):
1. Due to $$ issues we are going through (don't we all have them?) We need a few (10 - 12) Brave, hearty and generous souls to bring some soda with them this Thursday (cans or 20oz bottles). If they can be chilled ahead of time (or have your student bring them in that morning and I'll make sure they get cold), that would be great. Diet, water, regular, whatever!
2. Instructions for this Saturday's Graduation - this only involves the 40 students playing in Graduation band (they know who they are). This is below:
Be there by 10 am (no bus) Celeste Center - State Fairgrounds
Meet behind the stage
Cases/purses will be locked in the truck
Dress Nicely
Tear down is Liberty's job...ours is to set up
Suggested Directions:
South on I71 to the 17th avenue exit
Right on 17th (towards fairgrounds) - follow signs
We'll be done around 1 pm - so Liberty can set up for their graduation
Thanks,
M Lutz

Good Tuesday Morning Parents:
Well the parade went very well! With all the humidity, as well as heat, there were NO complaints about wearing shorts. It turned out to be a good call.
Two major things going on this week:
T hursday Night - Annual Awards Banquet
6:15 - dinner in the commons
7:30 (app) - awards in the theater
Students are to dress nicely, and attached is the instructions (in case you've misplaced it)
Please make every effort to be there - this is the one chance we have all year to honor these remarkable students.
Friday after school - Concert/Symphonic band chairing
Beginning at 3 pm for some, 3:30 pm for others - until 5-5:30 pm - on a first come, first served basis. No sign ups.
This should take less time than allotted, depending on the students.
This is for OHS underclassmen ONLY - This won't affect those going to Orange or graduating seniors.
That's all for now. See you Thursday!
M Lutz

Good Morning Parents:
Nice turnout yesterday! I hope you all enjoyed listening, I know we enjoyed performing.
MAY DAY!!! We have added a playoff game for Lax - this Saturday night at 7:30 pm. Please e-mail Mrs. Wimer if you can help. The weather looks to be good, and it's OUR OHS boy's lax team. (don't know who they're playing yet...it's TBD).
Attached is the map of the parade route for this Monday (May 26). Students need to be there BY 9:30 am (no buses - parents) - Powell Center. Uniform is the complete summer uniform....since it's been a while - Shirt and official shorts, white socks and shoes. If the weather decides to turn cooler (in Ohio?!) or go bad, then pay close attention to the e-mails on Sat and Sunday...just in case we need to make a change. We are number 21 in the parade = when we're done, the students are all yours (after they've loaded their instrument back on the truck).
I've also attached the band awards dinner instructions (again) in case you needed it....May 29th at 6:30 pm in the commons.
That's all for now. See you at the parade!

kimrickbarnes@aol.com nancymoore@insight.rr.com
Joe Taylor called the meeting to order at 7:30 pm.
SECRETARYS REPORT
The minutes from the February meeting were approved as written. Members are reminded that there will be no general membership meeting in July. The Board will meet to discuss budgets.
TREASURERS REPORT
We are breaking even at this point. Spring concessions are starting to kick in. A financial report was presented. Rick announced that he will be stepping down as OMBA Treasurer, effective immediately. Thanks to Rick for his years of service.
PRESIDENTS REPORT
1. Retirement Party for Mike Lutz will be held on Thursday, June 5. The Officers of the band are organizing the party, with Cheryl Shaw acting as adult counsel. Alumni and teachers from the last 17 years at OHS are being invited. 2. Bylaws will be rewritten by Ellen and Nancy. We will have a reading of the bylaws at the May meeting, and approve them at the June meeting. 3. 2008-2009 budgets are due to Joe by June 30. Itemized budget requests are new this year. 4. Parent will be expected to pay any expenses (camps, costumes, etc.) in advance this year, before OMBA writes the check to the vendor. 5. OMBA will begin using Quickbooks Online to manage our funds. Parents will have access to personalized statements showing payments, fundraiser credits, and balances. Debit/credit cards will be accepted. This should cut down on bounced checks. Fee to use a credit/debit card will be charged to each family. Quickbooks site is secure. Only those with authority to update accounts will have access to all accounts. Fundraiser monies earned will only be applied forward to future expenses. We have permission from the district to hold transcripts, diplomas, etc. for unpaid bills and uniforms. We will revisit this system after a year. 6. Treasurer's position was opened to the floor. 7. Expense policy changes for bylaws: A returned check fee should be added. Credit/debit cards will now be accepted. 8. Private lessons are currently giving OMBA a percentage of the cost of lessons. Maybe next year a flat fee should be paid to OMBA at the beginning of the year to simplify bookkeeping. All lessons should be paid in advance by the month as was agreed when this began last year. Rich Schnipke volunteered to be involved in the meeting regarding lesson policies for next year.
9. An audit of our books is still in the plans. We were told to call back after May 1. VICE PRESIDENT'S REPORT
1. Ellen proposed a scrip program that would benefit only music students. Money earned would go into individual accounts. Ellen is meeting with Mrs. Farry on 4/15 to make sure it would be approved. Funds would be tracked in Quickbooks. Membership agreed to move forward with scrip idea. 2. Ellen is working on an autograph book to market to the students at OHS. Sponsors are being solicited in an effort to offset costs. Potential sales to 1700 students @ $3.00-$5.00 each. School may print the books for an additional savings to us. We could possibly market to Liberty and Orange HS. It was suggested that we contact OWU printing as an inexpensive option. PARENT REPRESENTATIVE REPORTS
1. Fat Rabbit Racing has requested help for the race on June 28-29. We will have more details later. 2. Concessions: There are events from March 29 to May 21. Chairs are resigning as of May 21. We will need to identify new chairpeople, as well as leads for each group. Students should be encouraged to sign up to work this spring. Parents need to step up to help with concessions so OMBA doesn't lose concession rights. All parents in other districts are expected to sign up for or are assigned to at least one event. It was decided by the board last year that concession events that are not able to open due to lack of participation will be charged against the responsible director's budget. Suggestions from the directors included a check box on parent information sheet in the fall for spring concessions, flyers in the concert programs, and a two minute video to promote OMBA on the website. Possible notation on Quickbooks to show that concession obligation has been met. 3. OOHS: We are hoping to take possession of concession stand on May 1. Electric and hot water will need to be upgraded. Mr. Zirille does not want a truck or a gator. Funds have been requested from OLHS . They are looking at what they have on hand that they can donate to help meet their obligation in addition to funds. OOHS will be taking the trailer from OLHS. Tony Trubiani has offered to help fix the trailer. DIRECTORS REPORTS
Mrs. Tanner/Mrs. Cotter: Thanks for parent support during Mrs. Cotter's time at OSMS. Shanahan combined concert will be May 28. Trills and Thrills will be on May 10, with an evening rehearsal on May 2. March concert went well. Women's Ensemble performed at the Middle School I & E judging at OOMS.

The meeting was adjourned at 9:00 pm.

Two items:
One - the attached - next Tuesday = a fundraiser that will not take ANY effort on your part. You don't even need to remember to bring in the flyer - just have dinner at Shane's and the band gets 10% of EVERYONE'S dinner cost...even those who don't know they're part of this effort! Is that cool or what? Please try to be there - I know I will!
Two - below - we are in need of helping Mrs. Wimer out - tonight and tomorrow. And these are the last ones!(for this school year). Please, can't you find a couple hours to assist?
I am hoping that you have a few names on the list for tonight's game. Otherwise, I will be alone.......... not good! Can you please tell anyone who is interested, that the game is at Shanahan stadium. Choir has the track meet at the high school and band is in charge of lacrosse at SMS. Report time is at 4:45.
Also, no one has volunteered to help with Wednesdays game yet either. If no one volunteers there, I will be alone with for that one too........ really not good! This game is with Liberty Middle school and is at the high school. Report time is 5:00. Hopefully, you can convince someone to lend a hand........
Thanks for your help!
Cheryl
'nuff said! help out, won't you?

Good Monday Morning Parents:
What a beautiful Sunday?! Too bad Saturday couldn't have been as nice, but we'll take what we can get, right?
Thanks to all who came to the concession stand last Friday night on a wet, miserable, track meet. Business seemed to stay pretty steady, and we had plenty of help. This week we have TWO nights (one just added last week):
Tuesday, May 6 - report time 4:15 done APP 8
Wednesday, May 7 - report time 5:15, done APP 8:30 pm
(e-mail Mrs. Wimer - bwimer@insight.rr.com if you can help!)
The play is this week (Diary of Anne Frank) - May 8, 9, 10, and 11
Music Boosters are meeting next week (May 12th) at 7:30 pm. This is the last official meeting of 2007- 08 school year. The next one (June 6) will be in preparation for the upcoming school year - as well as the opening of Orange preparations.
Attached are the instructions for the Band Awards Banquet - both in Microsoft 2007 and PDF. Questions? Please don't hesitate to e-mail me back.
Have a Great Week! (in spite of the rain)

Good Tuesday Morning Parents:
WOW! What a weekend! I couldn't be prouder of our students! Despite some truck trouble, the HEAT, and a couple other things, both bands did us proud. Concert band received a II and 2 III's on stage (I thought it was a little harsh, but it is state after all), and a II in sight reading (again, we did better than the rating) for an overall II = a red medal for each member.
Symphonic band received straight I's = blue medal for each member and a plaque for the wall. This is the first time for straight ones, even during those days when we were going to state every other year. Each year we are making history - first in MB and now concert band. I hope this will continue next year...I KNOW it will!
This week's schedule:
Flag Corps - Wed, Thurs - clinics, and tryouts on Friday. All after school. If you know of someone who would benefit from being in the guard, or who has some movement experience (dance), encourage them to come. This is open to all current 8, 9,10,and11th graders going to OHS next year.
Friday - concessions - OHS Invitational...come on over and help out. I will be working the first shift, but don't know if that's a draw or will keep people away!
That's it for this week.
M Lutz

Good Monday Morning Parents:
Well, this is contest week! Things will be a little crazy this week. Except for concessions, thins settle down for a couple weeks, and then get real busy (re:last week's update).
Today - 7 pm - percussion meeting - for BOTH Orange and OHS...if you cannot attend - please e-mail Mr. Bell. No audition = not in the battery
Tuesday, April 22 - 4:15 - track meet - CONCESSIONS
Tuesday, April 22 - 8pm - Grey Chapel - OWU Jazz ensemble (Park Avenue Jazz Band) concert
Wednesday and Thursday - nothing
Friday - Leave at 4:30 pm
CB warms up at 6 pm, performs at 6:30 in the GYM, not the auditorium
SB warms up at 9:15 pm, performs at 9:45 in the GYM
Return to OHS around 11:45 pm
Also - jazz ensemble tapes are due. If your student plans on being in Jazz ensemble, and haven't gotten the information sheets and music - they need to see me ASAP!
We are still in need of a couple parents to help with chaperoning (we already have two - could always use more), and don't forget - the truck usually passes us on the way home, and any help you can do as far as unloading the truck, as you wait for your student = earlier leaving time for all. That's a win- win no brainer!
Told you - busy week! See you on Friday!!
M Lutz

June 5 - Last day!!!! ( for teachers)
See I told you so! (3 performances in 13 days!...by three different groups!!) I hope this helps to keep you up to date.
For the 25th - yes we are in need of chaperones as well as a truck driver for our equipment. There is not enough time for a meal stop (too bad - Massey's in Gahanna is right next door to the school!), so students will need to bring a sack lunch, leave and then return (like for district..that worked well), or eat @ Gahanna.
That's all for now. Hope to see you tonight!

Congratulations to our jazz ensemble - they placed first this past Friday at Tiffin! Out of 13 Jazz ensembles! overall average score of 96.5 out of 100!
Also, PLEASE help us with these concessions - every $$ we make goes into our music programs! A special thank you to Tony Trubiani, Chris Shaw, and Mr. Saupe (Strings dad) for stepping up and making a bad situation good.

Hi all,
No, sorry, no times yet for the 25th, but thanks for asking!
Just two items - we have a REAL need for workers this Friday at the concessions for the Girl's Lax at OHS stadium. Both students (app 4) and parents, as well as a lead. If you can help, PLEASE e-mail or call Mrs. WImer at:
bwimer@insight.rr.com or home 549-2286
Second, the band spring awards banquet has been moved. It was originally scheduled for Tuesday, May 27, but due to a conflict with the theater being used, it has been moved with Orchestra to the 29th (Thursday) and Orchestra has graciously taken the 27th. (our thanks to Mrs. Moss).
For those not aware, this is the last big "hurrah" for the band members - they receive their year awards, senior plaques, (and maybe a medal from state?). Everyone is encouraged to attend, but not required. But if you experience this, you will be glad you came. It all starts around 6:30 pm in the commons ("pot luck") and then moves to the theater around 7:30. We usually finish by 9 pm. Please circle this date on your calendar and bring the whole family - they're all invited, even extended family (ie:papaw and nana).

Good Monday Morning Parents:
WOW (again)...we pulled it off! BOTH bands qualifying for States for only the second time in 10 years!!
You should be proud! I know I am! OK, enough with the exclamation marks (LOL!)
Dates for state look to be April 25 (Friday night again ) and possibly at Gahanna-Jefferson HS (closer than Groveport!). I am awaiting word from G-L HS...but if they can't take us, then we'll have to travel farther - Medina , Ohio or North Royalton HS.
There is another date (May 2) but that is FULL of sports - including our own OHS track invitational. There is a track meet the 25th, as well as boy's lacrosse scheduled, so this is the date of LEAST conflicts. Saturday the 26th is full of baseball and softball, and the 3rd is prom. You see how I arrived at the 25th of April. For those who do have a sport conflict, or any other, please notify me ASAP, so maybe we can work it out. The day before just doesn't give me nor the coach any time for negotiations.
It has come to my attention that there are only 50 people signed up for band as of last Friday night. According to our calculations, the number should be closed to 100. I know some have not registered yet, but still the number is disappointing. Please remember that Mr. Wright will not assign a time period for band until late May, so any conflicts this year will probably not exist next year. If your student is waiting around to see, a word to the wise - it's easier to sign up, and then drop (hopefully not) if there is a problem, than to try to add after the schedule has been "run".
Another "reason" upper classmen are using is senior option. Mom and Dad, sometimes we have to watch out for our young people in spite of themselves...to them - the extra 45 minutes of sleep is more important than a college registrar, or scholarship committee seeing that the student was in an organization for three, not four years...many time not being able to explain, their application getting no further than committee. Please check with your band student on this - we have come so far these past two years! I would absolutely hate for it to have to be rebuilt over the next couple years - we need to build on what we have NOW!
I told the students in November - both OHS and OOHS that the best present they could get me for retirement is to stay in band. And I STILL mean it. And to the OOHS people - change is never easy! You'll be going through alot of changes these next few months - but give it a try - you never know - you might like it! But w/o at least trying, how will you ever know?
Ok, ok, I'm done. It had to be said. PLEASE, if you have questions or concerns, feel free to e-mail them to me, and I'll get back to you as soon as possible.
Sincerely,
M Lutz

Good Wednesday Morning parents:
Nice turnout last night!
Thanks to all who came and supported our students in their first "annual pre-contest concert". I hope you all had a good time, and we didn't go too long (45 minutes, as promised)!
Remember, you are MORE than welcome to attend the competition at Groveport Madison HS (directions on our website, Olentangyband.com and past e-mail). Just a couple reminders:
1. No recording devices of any kind (including cameras and phones)
2. If the doors are closed, please do not attempt to enter (so get there early - CB at 7 pm, SB at 9 pm)
3. NO food in the auditorium (Drey).
4. Showing appreciation for the performance is allowed...however, over the top displays (standing O, whistling, yelling) will not influence the judge's rating in a positive manner, but it may be negative.
5. If you need to take your student home after performing, please understand that when we leave the stage, we then go th sight reading adjudication = 1/2 hour later, we'll be at our homerooms - that's the best place to find either me or Mr. Brun to release your student to you. We don't know our Homerooms yet.
Last - Butter braid will be delivered on Tuesday, March 18, at 5 pm. Pickup will begin at 6 pm. If you come early - you WILL be put to work, so if you don't want to help (which we need) then arrive after 6 pm. At app 8 pm, we plan to close up shop.
That's all for today. See you Friday!

Good Morning Parents:
Just a quick note - due to the cancellation of school and the musical performance tonight, the OMBA board has voted to cancel the music booster meeting for tonight. We will just meet on our "normal" night in April. Sorry for any confusion.
This week's concert and contest is still on, as far as I know:
Concert - tomorrow at 7 pm in the theater - both bands - full concert attire
Contest - this Friday @ Groveport Madison HS - leave 4:30, CB at 7 pm, SB at 9 pm, return to OHS - app 11 pm
I'm sick of snow! (never thought I'd hear myself say that!)

Parents:
Just a FYI reminder:
Tonight is the Butter Braid - Pick up!
6 - 8 pm. Please be on time! We also could use some help from 5-6 pm to prepare the orders and sort.
Thanks, and sorry about forgetting yesterday!

Well, here we are - in school despite what the students may have wanted.
I just wanted to add my thanks to all who voted for the school issue, and remind myself how much I'm going to miss working in a district/community that DOES support the Arts, and doesn't just pay lip service to it
Speaking of supporting the Arts (nice segue, right?) - Tomorrow through Sunday - The musical - involving over 100 students from band, choir theater and strings.
Next Tuesday - 7 pm in the theater - Band concert.
Next Wednesday - Choir concert - 7 pm in the theater.
I will be sending out a reminder about contest next Monday...still looking for a couple people to help chaperone.
Sincerely,
M Lutz

Good Monday Morning Parents:
Well, here it is ....March! 14 school days until break, musical this week, 8th grade combined concert tonight, contest next week...WHEW!
Thanks to all (including students) who helped out last Saturday to make the Olentangy MS Solo and Ensemble contest such a success. It couldn't have happened w/o you, and I know - because I was there in the "office" and w/o the HS students and the few parents we had helping out, it would have literally crashed. We had app 250 events from Olentangy's 4 MS's with 9 judges. Other districts are interested in joining us in the future, and judges are asking about getting on the list for next year. Kudos to Mr. Brun for founding and spearheading this whole thing, and Mrs. Cabral Hever, Mr Bell, and Mrs. Straub, fro helping make this a reality. More help and more work is needed for next year (hint, hint).
Tonight - Orange and Shanahan MS's are combining for a concert with the Westerville Community band. Each group will play a couple songs individually, then combine for a couple. Admission is free. It will be in the "west" gym at Shanahan, at 7:00 pm.
MUSICAL DAYS AND TIMES:
Tuesday night - Parent night - Musical
Wednesday day - in school performance
Thursday night - opening night for the musical - 7 pm
Friday, Sat - 7 pm
Sunday - 2 pm
Monday, March 10 - Music Boosters - 7:30 pm...hopefully meet the new Choir director at Orange
Tuesday, March 11 - 7 pm - Contest Concert both concert bands. - full concert attire
Wednesday, March 12 - Parent teacher conferences
Friday, March 14 - CONTEST
Buses leave at 4 :30 pm (still need chaperones and truck driver) - for Groveport Madison HS
Concert band performs at 7 pm
Symphonic band at 9 pm
10:00 (app) - we load and leave
11 pm (app) - we arrive back to OHS
WHEW! - I told you. I am so glad this is our "down time" - LOL
BTW - Congratulations to BOTH Orchestras - Gold last week and Blue this past Saturday - I at State for both - a new record for OHS....now It's the band's turn to set a record!?
Enjoy the warm temps...you know they won't last long in OHIO!

Good Thursday morning parents:
I told you, when I know, you'll know. These times came in yesterday. I have also attached the schedule for the entire site (both PDF and word), in case you want to hear other groups. I would recommend you plan on arriving early - app 45 minutes or more - so you don't end up missing it. If the doors are closed, DO NOT KNOCK! This+an irate parent at State one year almost got us D. Q'd!
The buses are leaving as close to 4:30 pm as possible. There will NOT be a dinner stop, so students will either need to leave the school and get dinner (Chipoltle?) or bring a sack lunch. There will be time at the site for each band to eat - CB after, SB before their performances.
Both bands are traveling together (app 135 total). We need:
chaperones for the buses.
set up crew for the stage (app 2-3 parents)
driver for the truck
When concert band is done, you may take them home, however, Mr. Brun or myself MUST see you with them. When symphonic is done, we are packing and leaving = back here around 11 pm.
The uniform for the student is - full concert with medals encouraged.
Directions - 270 southeast to rte 33 exit (to Lancaster) at the first exit, (Hamilton road) turn right(south). Groveport madison HS is the second school on the right (app 1.5 miles).

Good Monday Morning Parents:
As the month of March progresses, it gets busier and busier! I will try to remember all the dates coming up:
Butter Braid due last week (Friday - snow day) - please get these in ASAP!
March 1 - competition at Orange MS - 7:30 to noon - we NEED 10 parents and 30 students - please e-mail me if you can help, even for part of the morning.
March 6, 7, 8, 9 - Musical
March 10 - Music Boosters - 7:30 pm in the OHS band room
March 11 - precontest concert at OHS theater - 7 pm - concert band; 7:20 - make up performances (for those who have not fulfilled the Sym band obligation of solo or small group performance); 7:40 - Sym band. We are planning on having two judges attend and listen to us, so don't be surprised if you see someone writing critique - its not for a rating - but to help us prepare. FUL CONCERT ATTIRE.
March 14 - Contest at GROVEPORT HS - this is new as of last Friday...Thomas Worthington has too many bands AND choirs who share people (our choirs are going on Saturday). And TW is the only band AND choir site for Friday = OHS and Liberty both are being asked to move to Groveport. I still don't have times - I hope to get them this week!
Busy month! I hope to have delivery times for Butter Braid soon as well. Please keep watching the e-mails as information (finalized) will be coming in fast and furious. Just an FYI - you are encouraged to attend the Groveport contest (please!) - we need to see friendly faces in the audience, plus hopefully help "root" both bands to a qualification for State...but remember "NO FLASH OR AUDIO RECORDING OF ANY KIND - INCLUDING VIDEA AND PHONES" - remember to turn off phones when you enter the auditorium.

Good Monday Morning All :
WOW! Was Blast great!
Many parents said at intermission that they felt bad for those from OHS not in attendance. If you missed out, ( or want to go again!) - they are in Dayton for the either the next 5 days or couple weeks...depending on who you talk to.
If interested - they're at the Victorion Theater in Dayton (google it).
Dinner went well, the buses were on time, the food was good (and plentiful, once their staff realized there were 70 more people out there than just 5 minutes ago!) and the students were very well behaved - no problems....as always, we can all be proud of them - either while performing or "off stage".
This is a busy week for the other two music areas of our school - both Blue and Gold string orchestras perform at their State Competition on Friday night, and both Keynotes and Shimmer compete in Mooresville, Indiana. The band? We have the weekend off - enjoy!
March 1 - Olentangy MS Solo & Ensemble at Orange MS - we need help - e-mail me and I'll pass your info on if you can help - concessions in the cafeteria, office help, etc. I will be in the office helping to keep things on track, as well as having three groups performing from OHS who couldn't got to OMEA (percussion and a brass group). Sign ups for our students will go up this week.
That's all for now...remember 6 months until Football!

This note is for those attending BLAST. If you or your student is not planning on this, go ahead and delete, and I won't take it personally:
There is still some interest...but need more answers...we have app 8 tickets left, and I would like to get rid of them (preferably to OHS band people).
BLAST is like being surrounded by a drum and bugle corps show, as well as on the stage (the members were Star of Indiana corps members originally). This is both an Emmy award winner (on PBS in 2001) as well as tony award (on Broadway). It's kind of like STOMP with horns and flags (and of course, percussion). PLEASE, if you are interested - e-mail me back THIS MORNING - there is some staff interest, but you should come first, being a member of the "family".
For Sunday - 4:30 pm at the band room - we will leave as soon as everyone's here - the later we leave, the less time we have to eat, and you know how much I LOVE to eat!
Wear Olentangy (band) stuff - dress is business casual, and jeans will not get you thrown out - this IS a touring company, but it's not Les Mis!
Bring extra $$ if you want souvenirs - t- shirt, DVD, etc...and it won't be cheap!
We plan on being back around 11 pm (or before). If the student is planning on riding there on the bus, and back with their parents - please tell the chaperone on the bus (so we don't sit there and wait for someone who's already left!)
That's all for now - this is gonna be great!
M Lutz

To all parents going to Blast:
I have talked to transportation, and due to liability insurance, they cannot take underage students that are not part of the group. I am sorry, but as I told you on Monday night, I had concerns based on previous issue I had heard about. I hope this does not mean that you cannot got and/or "bond"during our meal together.
Again, My apologies, but insurance (and lawsuits) rule our culture,
M Lutz
2/13/2008 9:27 AM
Good Morning parents:
Hope you have "weathered" the weather this week. I just wanted to touch base with you about this weekend:
1. We still have app 16 tickets left. If you are interested, please get back to me ASAP...otherwise I'll have to "scalp" them in front of the theater to try to recoup our $$ (yes, they are already paid for - based on the interest shown in December)
2. We go rain (snow) or shine. the performance will not be called off, so unless Sunday's weather is "Armageddonish", we go. If we don't, we cannot get our $$ back for the tickets. But of course, the dinner $$ will be returned. But think positive!
3. schedule (again)
BLAST
4:30 pm - meet at the band room
4:45 - leave for Marion
5:30 - eat at Ryan's Steakhouse
6:20 - leave for the theater
6:45 - begin taking our seats
7:00 - Blast begins
9:30 - We leave, arrive back at OHS around 10:15pm, everyone goes home
4. The Orchestra concert planned for last night is canceled, and no date for a make-up. Come to Granville HS on Friday, February 22:
Blue performs at 7:10 pm, and Gold at 9:15 pm.
That's all for now....stay warm!

2/4/2008 7:53 AM
Good Monday Morning Parents:
Due to the fire and contest last week, I will continue to take $$ for Blast through the end of today. Then, it's first come first served = those who didn't reserve a ticket, can now purchase (and meal). The cost:
ticket - $34.00
Meal - Ryan's steakhouse in Marion - drink, all you can eat (including steak) - $9.00
total - $43.00
Note - you don't have to ride the bus to go and or have the meal - you can meet us there. We are planning on the buses leaving around 5 pm on Sunday, February 17, and returning around 11 pm.
As of this morning, there are app 26 tickets still up for grabs, but that number will decrease after this afternoon (when I see the bands).
This past Saturday was Solo and Ensemble competition at Granville HS. The students did GREAT and we (the staff) are all very proud of both the results as well as their preparation, seriousness of approach, and deportment both on and off stage. The results are below.
Band results:
1 - III (good)
3 - II's (excellent)
22 - I's (superior)
Strings results:
10 - II's
13 - I's
Choir results:
3 - III's
14 - II's
38 - I's
That's 71 I's; 27 II's, and 4 III's = that's phenomenal!
For those who left, or could not be found, we will be making an effort to order medals for them by this Wednesday. ($3.00 each)
Next up is the Orienting MS's S & E - we will have both participants, as well as workers - more on this later. (March 1 at Orange MS)
After that is the contest concert - March 11, 7 pm in our theater; then contest at Thomas Worhington on March 14 - times won't be known until March.
enjoy the warm weather!
Monday, January 28 7:35 AM
Good Monday Morning:
There's not allot to add to last week. Just reminders:
1. Blast $$ (34.00/ticket) due by this Friday. Make checks out to OMBA
2. Solo $$ (13.00) due by this Friday as well. If not paid by then, then the solo WILL be canceled on Saturday morning.
3. $$ for the Blast dinner - App 9.00 (discount) with soft drinks included. I will be getting a count next week. Again, we will be writing one check (music Boosters) so make your checks out to them (OMBA). More later.
4. maps to Granville HS and maps OF Granville HS. Many people have complained about GHS being a confusing place to be, and it is! Hopefully, these maps will help. The students were given these same maps in a packet, last week....and you haven't seen them? go figure! LOL
That's about all for now. We just need to get through this week!

Wednesday, January 23 6:26 AM
Good Wednesday Morning Parents:
Hope you are all staying warm, on this, the first day of the second semester. Reminder tonight - Meeting for those planning on attending OHS next year - in the Shanahan MS band room at 7:30 pm. This meeting will incorporate both general information for next year, as well as getting to know the "real" Mr. Brun! Try NOT to miss it!
It is January, and there is NO rest for the weary - Pit rehearsals, challenges, ensemble rehearsals (Feb 2 is only 10 days away!) - this all happening after school. During school we are preparing for Large group competition in March (14 - Thomas Worthington HS).
Last, please remember - Solos owe $13.00 by January 31
. Blast ticket $$ (34.00 per ticket) - due also by January 31. In both cases - make checks out to OMBA.
That's all for today...see many of you tonight!
M Lutz
PS - if any of you attending tonight could see your way to bringing some cookies...I have promised (yes, and I will bring some too), but if a couple of you could also, then we 'll have enough.
Thanks,
ML
Monday, January 14, 2008 7:46 AM
Good Monday Morning!
Well we have exams this week = a very hectic time. I'll see the bands on Monday and Tuesday, then only for their exam on Wed....then not see them until the following Wednesday! Please remind them that practice is expected as well as needed! Especially for those going to Solo and Ensemble.
Speaking of which - S & E is on February 2 at Granville HS (directions later). We have 125 events (B,C & Orch) with app 200 students involved. Please don't try to have a conference with ANY of us that day - we'll be running around like crazy.
Coming home today is an information packet about Olentangy's MS solo and ensemble event on March 1 - for those who are in Symphonic band (required to perform in some way) and cannot make the Feb 2 date.
There is a meeting of ANYONE interested in hearing Mr. Brun's thoughts and plans for next year next Wednesday, January 23 at 7:30 pm at the Shanahan Band Room. Cookie will be provided. In the past this has been a recruiting/information meeting for 8th graders, but this year, I believe you will want to attend. Both students as well as parents are encouraged to attend. As soon as I hear from Orange about their planned meeting I will get the information out to you.
Attached are the minutes from last month's music booster meeting. We have January's meeting tonight at 7:30pm, and Mr. Brun will be there.
Mr Zirille will try to attend the February Meeting (he has a conflict with Johnstown's meeting tonight)
That's all for now, see you at the meeting tonight,
M Lutz

Good Monday Morning Parents:
Well, I hope you had a nice break with your students. Now we "hit the ground running" - trying to remember everything we taught before break, as well as new information in just 7 short days - exams!
The bands are preparing for both large group (March 14) at Thomas Worthington
and Solo and Ensemble contest at Granville HS on February 2 (times later - usually the week before we will find out the individual times). If your student is planning on participating, and I don't have the information (song name, composer, student/ensemble name) then they cannot perform - please remind them to get this information to me BY TOMORROW...there can be no delay...I have guaranteed the host our information in their hands by 5 pm tomorrow (I am driving it to them).
Pit orchestra sign ups are in the band room - they will be rehearsing Tuesdays and Thursdays - more information will be forthcoming as I get it.
Blast $$ - due by the end of this month to me - checks made out to OMBA...$ 34.00 per ticket. If you are planning on dinner a Ryan's with us - again, as I get the information, I will pass it on. As of right now, the buses are planning on leaving OHS at 5 pm, dinner at 5:45, the on to Blast - 7 pm.
That's all for now. Enjoy our "balmy" Ohio weather as you also enjoy OSU's thrashing of the LSU "tiggers"!!

Parents:
This is the last update for 2007!
Today the band met the new director at Orange HS - Marc Zirille mzirille@laca.org
He seems real nice and gung ho about getting things ready for Orange. In January, there will be a "meet the director" evening for current 8, 9,and 10th grade band members going to Orange.
At around the same time, there will be a meeting for Shanahan 8th grade as well as anyone interested in hearing Mr. Brun's ideas, etc., for next year.
More on the above later (2008).
Whew!!! Alot happening this week! Now, all of you sit back and relax and enjoy your family the next two weeks!
See you in 2008!
12/20/2007 1:44 PM
Great news everyone!
In case you haven't already heard (text from students or even calls - tsk, tsk!) - Mr. Brun has been offered and accepted the position of director of Bands for OHS starting next year (2008-09)
There were over 60 applications, narrowed to app 12 interviews, then six total interviews with the committees = Mr. Brun.
Now these stats also apply to the Orange position - we will pass on any information we have tomorrow...the new person is planning on being introduced to the band here (of which 27 are going to be his students) during the band overlap periods.
I can now breath a sigh of relief - knowing that the program that I have dedicated the last 19 years to, is in very good hands. I expect Mr. Brun to take this program to greater heights! I know, with your continued support, this WILL happen.
Have a great holiday break!

Good Monday Afternoon, parents:
Again, not alot at this time of year. Just hope you all have time to relax and enjoy family and friends...don't get too carried away on plans, cleaning, preparing, and forget to enjoy.
Tonight - 7:30 pm (get there early!) the postponed choir and later with orchestra concert from yesterday.
Wednesday, December 19 - Jazz ensemble at McGraw Hill from 11 am until 2:30 pm - not open to public
Friday, December 21 - Jazz ensemble and Alumni at the Girl's BB game - pregame (between Jr var and Varsity) and 1/2 of Varsity, then we all go out to eat at Asian Garden - game is open to public as is dinner, but only performers will get a gratis meal (LOL)!
As stated last week, this week we are in preparation for solo and ensemble contest (February 2), as well as reading music for large group (March 14).
Have a great break!

Good Tuesday Morning Parents:
I was out (personal day) yesterday, so please don't fault me on the tardiness of these note - I tried to send from home, but the system wouldn't allow it. Anyway, here we are.
Sunday's concert went very well. I am so sorry if you had to miss it, but most did not - Standing room only! We've not had that problem since before the split with Liberty. Many nice comments afterword, as well as e-mails - some from non-parents - they heard about the concert (don't know if via our LC board, pride day handouts, or word of mouth?), but they were most complimentary. I plan on sharing some with the bands today. Our next concert is March 11 at 7 pm in the theater (contest performance/dress rehearsal) and based on Sunday, you won't want to miss that one either!
We have already started working on Solo & Ensemble contest - February 2, 2008 at Granville HS. This mandatory for Symphonic band, and encouraged for Concert band members. I'm sure you'll hear more about this as the school year progresses.
Today is the "kick off" for challenges. These are meant to keep the higher chairs on their toes, and give the lower ones a chance to rectify any mistakes there may have been in the audition...and this equals that everyone gets better = the large ensemble improves as well. Understand that this is a one-on-one challenge, and no one should be involved in more that two per week. I mention this because some young people get a little crazy and try to schedule a challenge every day = way too much stress. If this does become any kind of problem, please feel free to e-mail me, and I'll do my best to fix the situation.
Hope all your basements stay dry!
12/6/2007 8:11 AM
Good Morning Parents:
Just an FYI - due to conditions beyond our control, there will NOT be a silent auction this Sunday in the commons.
You are free to sit there until the doors open to the public - app 1:30.
We must keep the doors closed during pictures - less distractions, and sometimes the photographers need to move around. We should be done by 1:30, so if you want to stay, then by all means sit in the commons...or you could drop off and come back by 2 pm.
We will start on time(barring an emergency).
See you Sunday,
M Lutz

Good Monday Morning Parents:
What a weekend! both #1 AND #2 defeated = OSU as number 1 (and rightfully so!) This will be a season to remember! And what a response to the Blast tickets - we had 100 last week, and now have 7 unspoken for. We are in the process of getting school buses for the trip, as well as a meal stop in Marion. More later.
Three things for this week:
1 - OUR HOLIDAY CONCERT!!! This Sunday at 2 pm, all three bands, and free! what's better than that?! (there is a rumor of a silent auction while we are getting our pictures taken - as soon as I find out more, you'll find out!)
2. Music Boosters - Monday, December 10, at 7:30 pm - the nomination/voting for officers, and Dr. Davis in attendance.
3. The long awaited, much anticipated, well attended - alumni night for Jazz Ensemble will be Friday, December 21 - for the Ladies' BB game. All returning Jazz Alums need to report to the band room, in either festive attire or for their respective school at 6:45 pm. Dinner location has not been determined, since Fuddruckers closed (our old haunt!) Please pass this on the any alum you might know. Since this will be my last one, it would be cool if it was really huge!
Isn't this nice? (big change since MB season!) I met with app 35 band directors over this past weekend at the district 10 honors' band - and gave Big Nut allot of grief - about the 15 week MB season he just finished! But of course, they had just won the state championship for D III.
Well, don't get blown away today!

11/28/2007 8:38 AM
Good Thursday Morning!
If you have not heard, we are in the process of obtaining tickets for the ONE performance in Marion of the Broadway (and Tony Award winning) musical, "Blast!".
We have 100 tickets held for us, and the students will be using app 60. That leaves 40 for anyone interested.
Information:
Date - February 17 (Sunday) at 7 pm - President's Day is the next day = no school
Where - Marion Theater ( you can google it and get more info)
Cost - $35.00 per ticket (when they were in Columbus, four years ago - they were $65 apiece)
Meal? - we are planning on taking 2 school buses and stoping in Marion - Ryan's Steak house - buffet (app $10.00 per person)
Transportation - I will check and see if parents can ride the bus. I know many will not want to partake of this option, but some will be interested. As of this writing, I am thinking it is against policy, but we'll see...we will need chaperone!
Total Time - leaving around 4 pm, returning around 11:30 pm
THESE TICKETS ARE A FIRST COME, FIRST SERVED. IF YOU ARE DEFINITELY INTERESTED - E-mail me back and tell me your name, your student's name, and how many tickets you want.
We need to give the office a total number of tickets by Friday! Please don't tarry, but say you want them, and then decide not to. If a conflict comes up, we can always seel a couple tickets, but not a large number.
Stay Warm!!

11/26/2007 7:28 AM
Good Monday Morning Parents:
Hope Thanksgiving went well for all of you. Now back to the "grind". This week - NOTHING!! (Ain't it great?)
December 1 - we have three people in the District ten Honor's band - Erin Wilson, Greg Taylor, and Audrey Bonfig - they will be rehearsing Tuesday night and all day Saturday, followed by a concert at 3 pm. We also have MS band members participating, but I don't have all their names.
Remember - Our Annual Holiday concert is NEXT Sunday at 2 pm - Pictures at 1, concert at 2, done around 3...full concert uniform. If you find yourself in need of a shirt (tux, french "wing" collar) - they have them at Stein Mart and Burlington coat factory (both on Sawmill) for app $12.00. In case your freshman didn't order one, or your upperclassman grew since last year! - better have them check. Medals are encouraged to be worn for this concert.
Please...If you have any marching band uniforms in your house, please, please get them in so we can close the door on that portion of the year.
Last - Reminder - Music Boosters - Monday December 10 at 7:30 pm - Mr. Davis (our superintendent) is slated to attend, as well as officers for next year.
Please try to attend!
That's all - enjoy trying to loose the weight you gained over the weekend...but it was worth it!
M Lutz
Sorry - one more thing - winter percussion meeting is slated for tonight in the band room @ 6.pm
11/19/2007 7:35 AM
Good Morning Parents:
Thanks to all those who helped with the concessions last Friday night - it was definitely a "mad house" during 1/2 time, but for a good cause - helping us help Orange HS open with the equipment, etc., they'll need....without draining our funds for OHS music programs. Even if you could only help out a little, then you made a big difference!
Both bands were appreciative of your generosity at third quarter, and were very happy with our hosting. I only hope that means more playoffs in the future.
, as well as starting to think about solo and ensemble competition (February 2).
Deadline for application for Solo & Ensemble is December 20, and that day will be here before you know it! Ensembles are any number from 3-24, while students should NOT take solos, especially in class A (the highest class), unless they are taking private lessons. Also, Symphonic band is required to participate, or play somewhere else - concert, church, community group - in either an ensemble or solo. Concert band members are encouraged to participate = getting better individually.
That's about all for this week...oh yeah - GO BUCKS!
Go: Arkansas,
U Conn &/or Pitt,
Missouri/Kansas (can they BOTH lose?!) LOL
Happy Turkey Day!!
M Lutz
11/16/2007 7:27 AM
Good Friday Morning, parents:
Just three things that needed to get out:
1. Concert uniform consists of the provided jacket and tie (same for both girls and guys this year), French collar tux shirt, BLACK pants/slacks/shirt, BLACK socks, BLACK shoes (marching band shoes will work). If belt - BLACK, not brown, blue or silver. Ladies' shoes should not be "open toed". Hope this helps - they will need these items by December 9th concert, and medals are fine (on the left side of jacket).
2. Speaking of uniforms - as we head into the new year, (officer voting, etc.), the band is in DIRE need of a person(s) to head up the uniform committee. Mrs Karl and her people have done admirably, but she, and many on the committee have seniors, so they are looking for someone to train (they won't just hand the info over and abandon you). Please, especially Freshman/sophomore parents, won't you please consider helping here, and really make a difference? If interested, please contact me and we'll start the ball rolling.
3. we also have an opening on the music booster board - vice president. We are looking for one, maybe two - one from OHS, one from Orange(?) to step up and help out in this transition year. Again, if interested, please e-mail the incumbent president (and returning) - Joe Taylor joeftaylor@aol.com
See you tonight, and beat MEEE - CHICKEN!!

Parents:
Due to Mrs. Wimer not being available this week, please e-mail Mrs. Shaw if you can help this Friday at the playoff game. I am sorry for the confusion.
"Shaw, Cheryl L"
Also, if you ordered Butterbraid, and didn't pick it up (shame on you), you need to contact Mrs. Fox as to the whereabouts of your order - after this week - we donate it to the Deleware county P. I. N.
ellenfox@insight.rr.com
Last - the amount made this past weekend was in error - it was $13,140, and growing (people donating late!) Is that cool or what?

Good Morning Band People!
Wow!! What a weekend...many, many things, and did you step up?YES! Here's how:
1. with 4 days notice, you completely staffed the playoff game concessions!
2. with 3 days notice, you (and the students) staffed the inside concessions for the Gymnastics tournament.
3. In spite of the change of days, you made more money than since the split with Liberty, and rivaled the amounts we made when we collected the WHOLE district!
(before the split - the highest was app $13,000 - this past Saturday - $12,998!)
4. In the pouring rain, 45 of our band performed for veterans and their families yesterday at Kingwood.
Many thanks to those who took time out of their weekend - to work concessions, drive a route, or just to give up your band member for a time - we couldn't have done ANY of this w/o you!!!
Now for this week:
A. - today - again, very busy - app 5:30 pm - Butterbraid arrives
6:30 pm - you can pick up your order at the band room
7:30 pm - pick ends - music boosters begins (stay for the meeting, why don't cha?)
B. We will be hosting another game this Friday E-mail Mrs. Shaw "Shaw, Cheryl L"
Mrs. Wimer bwimer@insight.rr.com
C. - See below for another chance at raising $$ for your music student:
Fat Rabbit Racing has again asked the Music Boosters to provide volunteers for a race. The race is a 5K on Thanksgiving morning around the Polaris Mall. The race benefits the Luke Billings Foundation for Cerebral Palsy so the Music Boosters will be receiving $ but it will probably not be as much per hour as it has been in the past.
They have asked us to provide 20 volunteers. Volunteers will need to be available from 8:15 to 10:00 am. If you are interested in working, please send an e-mail to normaj@acornfarms.com.
Thank you!

Good Friday Morning!
Isn't it great to not have a game...wait a minute, we do!
1. Please, if you are planning on "just showing up", please call or e-mail Mrs. Shaw at:
"Shaw, Cheryl L"

3. Cemetery - Here by 12:45 pm - load and dress
Students not participating in the ceremony will hang up their uniforms upstairs.
The students participating will hang their uniforms in the regular place - they will need washing. Next week is uniform/hatbox turn in, and concert band fittings.
4. Music Boosters on Monday, November 12, at 7:30 Also on that day is the pickup for Butter Braids -
Times are from 6:30 to app 7:30 pm for the pick up....why not plan to pick up and stay for the meeting?
That's all for now,

Good Monday Morning Parents!
Well, did you enjoy your Friday night off? Good! Because we are hosting a playoff game this Friday Night and need volunteers to work concessions:
1. These are usually well attended (even for small schools) = $$
2. We used this money= last year to add to the fund for Orange = less $$ out of general fund = more money, more money!
3. We'll need at least 15 people from each department (Band, Choir Strings)
More info below:
Hello Everyone,
I have been informed today that we are indeed hosting a playoff game this Friday.........I am sorry, I do not know which teams are playing.
The game will start at 7:30 and we will open the stand at 6 as always.
Please send the word to all of your wonderful volunteers.........I am hoping for 15 from each department at the HS. The first 45 to respond get the honor!! :)
I will need a list of volunteers by Thursday evening to complete my list for the ticket takers.
Volunteers should arrive between 5:45 and 6:30.
Thank you!! Please contact me with any questions!

The only other thing(s) we have this week:
Pride day - 8:30 in the band room... remember - no breakfast = get it before arriving, but lunch will be provided. Done by noon.
Full uniform w/o plumes, gloves, gauntlets, and sashes
Thanks to the 48 hearty souls who have volunteered for the ceremony on Sunday: full uniform - w/o plumes
12:45 pm load truck and leave by 1 pm
2 pm - ceremony - SSB and Taps
3 pm - back at OHS, unload and leave
I told you it was a quiet week...it's just the weekend that's busy! And don't forget - music boosters on Monday, November 12!!!

Dear Parents,
Pride Day is coming up Saturday, Nov. 10. This is the Olentangy Music Booster's largest fundraiser. If you have not yet responded to Diane Saupe's email/call to help, please respond now. This can be a relaxing time for you! Just move your car periodically along your assigned neighborhood as the students walk between houses. While sitting at the side of the road, you can take the time to catch up on some light work, relax your mind a few minutes, read a book, or enjoy the scenery! The time required is 8:30 a.m. - 12:00 noon on Nov. 10 and includes a hotdog/chips lunch. If you can help, please email Diane Saupe at dmsaupe4@gmail.com or call 614-309-5791.
Plus, remember, kickoff for the buckeyes isn't until 3:30 pm!!!
If you have contacted me about an excused absence for this, please refresh my memory and e-mail me again. I need a number, and can't remember all who have e-mailed since October 6th.
Thanks,
M lutz

Parents,
Well what do you know! Alot of e-mails this week as well! Who would have thought?
Attached is the schedule for the rest of the year. Many times are not know yet ( ie - solo and ensemble, large group, etc), but I wanted you to know these dates for future reference.
Concert Band/Symphonic Band Schedule 2007-08
December 9 Holiday Concert - Theater
Pictures at 1 pm
Concert at 2 pm
February 2 Solo and Ensemble @ Granville HS
All Day
March 11 Band pre-contest concert
7:30 pm - Theater
March 14 Large group contest - District
Thomas Worthington HS evening
April 15 Large group State
May 18 Spring Concert 2 pm theater
May 26 Powell Memorial Day Parade
June 1(?) - Graduation
Also, a reminder to the washing committee - we need ALL the uniforms washed this week (by November 9th ) for Pride day. We will then need them washed one last time! YAY! And we'll then store them for the rest of the year, and your chore, tho' greatly appreciated, will be finished.
We are slowly getting into inside band - learning to use our inside voice - both in interacting with each other as well as playing.
Our next performance (besides the 11th) is December 9th. Pictures for yearbook will be at 1 pm, while parents and friends can peruse the cafeteria - a silent auction - to help defray the cost of our dinner at Dutch Valley (October 20th). The performance will commence at 2 pm, and be over around 3 pm.
Enjoy Friday night!

10/29/2007 7:27 AM
Hi parents,
Well, the season is now over (except for November 10 - pride day; and the ceremony on the 11th)...but WHAT A RIDE! We set many new records this year - first time ever qualifying more than once in a single season (3 in a row), a reserve grand champion trophy (Thomas Worthington), and a fine performance at State finals.
I know you as well as the band/staff was disappointed by the rating, especially in light of the fact of the ratings previous. I would say we were "robbed" but I am tired of hearing that "song" again. I feel we were, but all the comments on our sheets are viable, and they were on previous sheets, and we emphasized them, but at state, they do judge harder. We learn and move on. We will try to use this and do better next year, as well as learning from this for large group competition (in March).
This week's schedule - one item!
Tonight - concert/symphonic band chairing - many start at 3 pm, others at 3:15 and finish around 5 - 5:30 pm. We hope to have the bands done and seated by tomorrow - we begin rehearsing for our winter concert (December 9th - 2 pm).
That's all for now. There will probably be one more e-mail out this week, but nothing like the past couple weeks!
enjoy the "quiet"!

10/26/2007 8:32 AM
Good Friday Morning Parents!
Hey, this is the last crazy weekend/week of Marching Band!! YOO HOO! You all know I love FB and MB, but this has been a LOOOOONg season, and I think all of us are ready for a break!
Today - FB against Worthington Kilbourne
We hope to "spoil" their season and playoff plans like they did to us last year - due to our loss, we had to travel to Tiffin in the bitter cold, remember?
Tonight is also senior night - many thanks senior parents - all forms have been turned in, and we're good to go.
We will have a runthrough of the entire show after the game - weather permitting. Mom and dad, if the weather is wet, and has been most of the game, I'll want to get your sons and daughters home as soon as possible. Do we need the runthrough? yes. But in this case the cost will be too high. Pray for dry weather!
Tomorrow- State Finals
we will not do a march through due to warm ups being at 2 pm - we need the 15 minutes to get there, go to the bathroom, unload, and move. I don't want to be "hurried" during this time. All the other contests we have had plenty of time to warm an tune, and you know the results (3 I's in a row!) Please come and cheer your band on - they really get a kick out of you cheering as they take the field (no matter what they say). - I can see it in their faces and posture. So keep it up!
Due to their selling of DVD's and pictures - like any OMEA contest, no recording of any kind is allowed - pics, audio or visual. If caught, we could be disqualified. And no matter how "cool" you may think it is to get away with this, it won't be so cool i we get "NO RATING". Please enjoy the past performance dvds/tapes, and purchase one from the state ($20 - attached to this e-mail) Remember that we need help upon arriving - unloading as well as taking down the scaffolding. " Many hands make quick work!"
Last - a reminder about Monday after school - these are not "tryouts" - everyone who wants to be is in the ban...but these are chairing - which band(we have two) an which chair. Also remember, we will have challenges at different times during the year, if someone thinks they got cheated, or had a bad audition. The chairings go from 3 pm until around 5:30 pm and are handled by Olentangy staff.
November 10 - pride day from 8:30 am until noon (email Mrs Saupe if you can drive/help - "Diane Saupe" )
November 11 - ceremony at Kingwood cemetery - here at 1 pm, back by 3 pm - for those who have signed up
see you tonight/tomorrow!

Good Tuesday Morning Parents:
Just a note about tonight and Saturday:
Tonight - please feel free to help out tearing down the concert - it will expedite you child's exit, and will make all the staff (and SL helpers) very happy, because they will be able to leave as well. Even if you don't know where something goes, you can help bring it to the band room, stack chairs, etc. It will be greatly appreciated!
Saturday - along the same lines - we will need help unloading the truck AND trailer, as well as help taking the scaffolding down. If we have enough help, it won't take but a few minutes, and OSU/PSU kick off is hours later! Please consider helping us on this day as well.
That's all for now (but I know there will be more later...after, this IS contest week!)

Tuesday, October 22, 2007 12:43 AM
Mike, did you get this one yesterday?
Good Monday Morning Parents! (attached - minutes from the last music booster meeting)
What a weekend! I don't remember being as tired last year as we were on Saturday night/Sunday morning! then I remembered that Mt Vernon was home last year - big difference! But we survived.
Friday was as expected - a Braves win, and a long trip there and back.
Saturday was a little disappointing. The students performed well - both at the restaurant and the field, but Akron was just tougher thanus that night. Their show may have been based on one song, but what they did was clean - both playing and marching. But remember, they are a performing arts school, and they beat us by 12 points out of 300. Not bad.
The good news was we qualified for the third time in a row - never done at Olentangy! Plus, it was our highest score this season. The judging was fair but tough - a band that came in 8th place in class A with straight II's - had qualified that afternoon at Newark! So our scores bode well for States!
Schedule this week:
today - NOTHING!
Tuesday - nothing right after school - CONCERT:
Students here and dressed BY 6:30 for warm-up
March in to gym at 7 pm
Concert from 7-8 pm
Wednesday - Flags from 3:30 to 5:30 pm
Thursday - Full Band 3-5 pm; Percussion from 5:30 to 7:30 pm
Friday - Full band 3-5 pm; Dinner at 5...dress, warmup - senior parents at meeting point (south endzone, visitor's side at 6:30 pm) pregame at 7:15, game with runthrough after game
Saturday - 12:30 pm - load and dress (band room open at noon)
1 pm march through
1:15 - leave for Dublin Coffman
2:15 (app) - warm up area
3:15 - perform
3:30 - awards for that block - remember, no trophys at state, only a rating
4 pm - leave for OHS
4:20 - unload, including sideline, etc at OHS
8 pm - OSU defeats PSU by over 25 points!!
Next Monday - Chairing for concert/symphonic bands - 3-5:30 pm
Whew!!! what a busy week! but remember, this is the last one of this craziness, followed by much "down time!"
See you tomorrow!

Just two things today.
1. Looks like we made the right choice on Friday rehearsal - 1:30 pm - 3 :30....we had to come in yesterday - it was raining, and it looked bad to the southwest. But it never really got going, so we had a music rehearsal in the band room. Today, there is no class (testing) and I have seen APP 25 gold cards/college visits for tomorrow (plus, it's supposed to storm tomorrow).
2. This is to let you know that we have enough to take the RV to contest and there is still room for more.
We will leave the OHS parking lot at 2:45 pm.
Anyone wishing to join us can e-mail before Friday night or call before 2:30 pm on Saturday so we don't leave without you. However, if you do call that late please be on your way and on target for the 2:45 pm departure.
Please call Cheryl Johnson @ 614-679-9218 if you are unable to e-mail before Friday night.
We will definitely not be eating with the band. We will be making a restaurant decision on the way so we may or may not be eating at the Dutch Valley Restaurant. I'm sure we can find a suitable solution for dinner once we are all together.
Thank you,
Keith & Cheryl Johnson
I'll write to you again (probably tomorrow!)

Hi all!!
I was informed that you couldn't open these two attachments yesterday - my fault for not saving them as a pdf - that has been corrected.
New Philly now has TWO (2) AA bands - OHS and Akron Firestone - they will be tough, but I have faith in our kids! It looks like a knock down, drag out fight for grand champion...we'll see if OHS is up to it! Because of this, we will have awards 15 minutes later = getting back after midnight, sorry.
We will be leaving on Saturday at 1 pm, not noon as the website says (we changed it five days ago, so it's not Mike Moore's fault!)
See you later, if not this week, maybe at our concert - October 23 (next Tuesday!)

Good Monday morning parents:
There is alot today, and I know I'll forget something = more later this week.
Many attachments:
1 - note from Keith Johnson about the parent bus to New Philly - If interested - get back to him ASAP
2. A plea from the concessions committee - these are playoffs = not budgeted = "extra" $$$!!
3. Order form for DVD for our State Finals' performance - it's pretty self explanatory
Last Saturday we won 2nd in class for flags, second in class, and reserve Grand Champion ( this is a first time for us with this trophy).
Can we do better (performance)? Oh yes, and we need to in order to come away from States in a better mood than we did last year. This week's schedule is also attached. There are a couple of notes I need to make:
1. We WILL have rehearsal tomorrow, regardless of the weather. It may end early if we get the promised rain, but rehearsal is on.
2. Friday
A. rehearsal - Rain or shine - if rain - we will rehearse as much as we can in the Aux. Gym
B. Game - if rain - we will march in jeans, hats and raincoats (remember Kilbourne last year?) to save our uniforms for New Philly
This decision will be made at OHS - please make sure your band member had remembered jeans and tennis shoes.
3. Saturday leave time is in concrete - don't be late. The rest of the times are approximate, including when we arrive back. PLEASE, we have our students call on their or friend's cell phone when we are about 15 - 20 minutes from the school. There have been times when we have had to wait 1/2 hour to 45 minutes, after we're done unloading = over an hour total. Due to the lateness of times this weekend, please be prompt. The staff will greatly appreciate it. This past Saturday - well done on getting your student.
4. When the truck is being unloaded, you (parents) are MORE than welcome to help out - to just carry instruments in, etc. This will insure your child getting finished even earlier. We won't unload on Friday, but we will on Saturday.
Last - This has been a long season! There is a light at the end of the tunnel! After next week, things really settle down, but we will still have 2 more performances of the OHSMB - Pride day, November 10 (We need the $$!) and "Pep band" to Kingwood cemetery on Nov 11.
Then nothing until December 9 (winter concert).
See you (maybe) at MT V or New Philly!

Parents:
Just two items for today:
1. The time change for New Philly - we are now performing at 9 pm, not 9:15 = we'll get back 15 minutes earlier! (this is in case you missed my last update)
2. refer to below for New Philly. We have a parent offering this, and it sounds like fun...remember, you could be on one of the three buses loaded with teenagers!
M Lutz
Hello,
We are wondering if there is enough interest in traveling together to the New Philadelphia band contest? We wish to invite band parents and their families to join us to see our band perform in New Philadelphia. Traveling together would also allow us to get to know each other better.
We have a personal motor home which is a converted commercial bus. It has a seating capacity of up to 35 people. It is a 1976 MCI motor coach which has been on the road for a lot of miles. Our last long trip was to Lancaster, PA in August with no problems. I have a Commercial Driver's License and have driven bus commercially and for both Olentangy and Westerville School Districts. Currently I drive for the OSU Newark Athletic Department.
Since the band performs at 9:00 pm and the drive is a good 2.5 hours we believe we can leave OHS by 2:45 pm, eat along the way, at the Dutch Valley Restaurant if we wish, and arrive at the contest around 6:45 - 7:00 pm. Watch a few bands including OHS and the awards and travel along with the band home or possibly even be ahead of the band (not likely).
At any rate we should be in the parking lot at the same time as our students.
We would like to ask for donations to cover the cost of fuel. I estimate the total fuel cost to be around $165.00 for the round trip. Depending on the number of people traveling the suggested donation would be between $5.00 and $11.00 per person to fuel the motor home. We won't take the motor home with less than 15 people. This is strictly a ride share situation as the motor home is not for hire.
All other expenses are each person's responsibility: dinner, admission, souvenirs, snacks, whatever.
If anyone is wants to join us or if you have questions, please e-mail us (Keith & Cheryl Johnson / aka Skye's parents) at info@agaperetreats.org
We will compile a list on a first come, first reserved basis until we have enough to go and/or a full coach. Hopefully closer to a full coach.
Thank you,
Keith Johnson

Good Wednesday Morning!
Rehearsals have been tough this week - the students are starting to "turn up the focus" finally - after they qualified, there was a drop off of intensity in rehearsal - to be expected, but everyone needs to realize that our work load just got harder and heavier, not easier. I think with a contest this week, the students are able to focus on that.
We have all the times, etc for the upcoming competitions:
This Saturday:
5:30 - Load and dress
5:45 - march thru
6:00 - leave for Thomas Worthington
7:40 - warm up
8:30 - perform
9 pm - awards
10 pm - app return to OHS
Next Saturday: (new Philadelphia web site - http://www.npschools.org/nphs/band/facilities.html)
12 noon - load and leave - commercial buses
3 pm - dine at Dutch Valley restaurant - Sugar Creek, Ohio
5 pm - app - watch other bands at New Philly
7:30 - unload and prepare
8:30 - warm up
9:15 - perform
9:45 - awards
midnight (app) - return to OHS
Saturday, October 27
(web site of the state finals - directions, etc) http://web.mac.com/bstevens4/iWeb/omeasmbf/Welcome.html
noon - band room open, for loading and dressing
1 pm - march thru
1:15 - leave for Dublin Coffman HS
2:30 - warm-up
3:15 - perform
3:45 - awards, then load
4:45 - app - return to OHS
There's alot!!! But when we're done, we're done. I hope you can make as much as you can of the above! This is shaping up to be a "record setting" year and we want you to be a part of it!
See you Friday and or Saturday!!

Good Monday Morning Parents:
Here we go again! Contest week! Pressure is off (since we already qualified and have a tentative time for States), but now we need to really polish for October 27th. The schedule for this week is attached.
We asked for the 27th - so as to NOT extend MB season another week, especially with all the after schools that would entail. We asked for the mid to late afternoon to stay away from ACT that morning as well as any regional games/matches our fall sports may be involved in. Please understand....we cannot avoid ALL conflicts - taking the ACT at another site other than OHS or Dublin, the so=ports being moved to afternoon, etc. But we have tried our best. I hope with this early notification of performance time that most of these can be worked out. I've even tried to avoid any avid fan's missing of the Penn State game (not that I'll be watching - much!)
Please try to attend this Saturday...Thomas Worthington is 15 minutes away (at most) and I know we won't have many parents/groupies travel to New Philly (2-3 hours away). And don't forget to "make a noise"!
See you tonight at Music Boosters,
THIS weeks schedule:
October
8 Regular day schedule - nothing after school
Music Boosters 7:30 pm!
9 After school 2:50 to 5 pm;

Good morning parents:
I have put this message off until the tentative State schedule was posted, but they haven't yet, and I needed this to get out (you watch-it will posted in the next hour!)
Today,
Homecoming - many people (alums) come to the band stand to visit = chaos. It happens every year, and this one looks like it will also.
Weather - we will have water on the practice field today after school, and in the stands after pregame. We also have a plan to take off our jackets, if needed (90 degrees at 5 pm!? Where is FALL?)
Next Saturday - Thomas Worthington Contest - Our host has informed me that we will probably perform last, around 8 - 8:30 pm
Awards around 8:45, back here around 9:30 pm. Remember, OSU is at noon that day, so if you have tickets, there should be no problem, for once! It's on the Big Ten network, but I have Warner = going to a relative's house!
There has been different dates for the Marching Band concert = my last e-mail with changes confused some. Here is the final word - The concert will be at 7 pm, in the Gym, on Tuesday, October 23. We will have after school practice that week on Thursday, October 25 - prep for state and senior show. I am truly sorry about the mixup - in the handbook it was listed as the 25th, and somewhere else the 24th. But all along, it has been on the OHS website and district calendar as the 23rd. I hope this information doesn't mean you and your family cannot make it - this concert is a laid back fun time to review the season, as well as honor our first year letter winners as well as our seniors.
Again, as soon as I know about state finals, I'll pass that information on.
See you tonight at the OHS win!

Good Morning Parents:
Below are two changes that we have to do - due to making State contest and asking to go on the 27th (times should be known sometime this Friday = 4th e-mail!). Please make note of the below. I know the 1:30 time may be a problem with our younger students, but hopefully, there is enough time to work out carpools or other drivers.
Dinner Moms - that Friday is new, if you just want to go with pizza, that will work.
Sincerely,
M Lutz

Good Monday Morning Parents:
Whew! What a weekend! Long day both Friday and Saturday, as well as the emotional roller coaster - down on Friday (loss to Dublin Jerome) and up (Qualifying for State)! I hope you were there on Saturday for two reasons:
1. to see our students perform the best they have , so far.
2. Your encouragement's impact as they take the ready line and field cannot be measured. When the students hear you yell your organized cheers, as well as just the roar as they come out - you should see their faces - they are both embarrassed (they are teenagers, after all) and they smile and stand a little taller. Thanks to all who were thee - you helped!
If you couldn't be there - we go out again at Thomas Worthington - don't have times yet, but probably evening (leave around 6 pm). It's closer than West. Central was!
This week is normal schedule, with homecoming this Friday = adjusted pregame for the court, half time will be the first three songs with the "O" and we'll have ALL our alums that are at the game joining us for the Alma Mater. There will NOT be a run through of the show - we'll come over to the concessions and play there. We will be running through the show the other two home games - 10/12 and 10/26.
State Contest - we will know times by the last week of the season, but until then we are planning on asking for 3 pm until 6 pm performance times on 10/27 (at Dublin Coffman Stadium). Late afternoon because of ACT testing here at OHS (through noon) and the OSU game (Penn State) that night. This window will hopefully work, but please understand we cannot dictate when and on what day we get - that's up to the coordinator. When we learn more - you'll be the first to know!
Last - today is the kick off of the fundraiser - Butter Braid and some new stuff. All profit goes into your child's account to be used for trips (choir and strings this year, band next - NY city) or band camp or any other music fees your son or daughter has. Plus, the stuff is GREAT! If nothing else - order some for the holidays (Thanksgiving is less than two weeks later) and try them!
That's all for now,
See you at the game!
M Lutz

Just a small change in schedule this Saturday...which may equal a benefit of better scores.
We are going to have a march through of the show (no instruments) precisely at 6 pm on our practice field. Uniform will be hats and plumes, bibs and band shoes/socks. This will take app 20 minutes, so when done, we'll just load and leave at 6:30 pm as planned.
The band room will be open at app 5 pm, so if you need to, you can drop your band member off early.
The rest of the day stays the same:
Perform at 8:30 pm
Awards at 9:45 pm
Return to OHS app 11:15 pm

Good Wednesday Morning Parents:
This is just a short note - The Music Boosters, due to the MANY conflicts with October 6th, and the fact of it being Homecoming, have decided to move the Pride day to November 10. This day will not have any testing going on, and most, if not all fall sports will be over.
The hours will be the same - 8:30 am to noon. If you signed up to drive, but cannot due to the change, please e-mail Mrs. Saupe at
"Diane Saupe"
If you can NOW drive, when before you couldn't, please email Diane as well.
I am sorry for any inconvenience this change may have caused you and yours, but this was the earliest, clear date we could find.
Sincerely,
M Lutz
PS - This Saturday, the band has voted to stay and watch three other AA bands - Reynoldsburg (really good band), Hilliard Davidson (a beast!), as well as Westerville Central.
After performing, there is a 15 minute Judges' break...if you need to take your young one home, please meet us at the buses at this time. Awards are planned for 9:45 pm (it won't be as long a wait as Highland! i hope)and we should be back here around 11:15 pm
Monday, September 24, 2007 7:26 AM
Good Monday Morning!
I hope you enjoyed your weekend off - we don't officially have another two days off until November. Just to give you something to look forward to!
Friday Night went well - those 8th graders can play! Plus they stayed the whole game, and seemed to have fun! I know the HS band enjoyed hosting them! Even tho it was hot! Hopefully this week will cool down.
This week's schedule is "normal" - Tues and Fri - full
. Tues after full - percussion
. Wed - flags
. Thursday - percussion
. Friday's game - at Dublin Jerome return app 11pm
SATURDAY'S SCHEDULE:
. Westerville Central Competition
. Attendance 6:20 pm
. Roll 6:30
. Warm up 7:40 pm
. Perform 8:30 pm
. Return to OHS 11:15 pm
one last note (or plea):

Thank you,
M Lutz
Thursday, September 20, 2007 9:24 AM
good Thursday morning parents.
two attachments -
1. - information for westerville central competition next week - our leave time is 6:30 pm - perform at 8:30
2. letter from head of Pride Day - to sign up to drive - understand this please - this is the ONE major fundraiser we do with little overhead...many we do, the company gets 1/3, the agent gets 1/3 and we get 1/3. on this we keep app 98%! and make app $12,000. please make every effort to drive, and getting your student to this activity. I know there are conflicts - ACT workshop, SAT, etc., but otherwise, your band member is expected to attend.
3. NEW GIG - marching band on Sunday, November 11th - at Kingswood Cemetery - 2 pm to honor our fallen veterans- full uniform...more later
Middle School tomorrow night! yea!!! And a win over Marysville!! double yea!!!
See you tomorrow,
M Lutz

Good afternoon parents:
Sorry for the tardiness of this note, but we've been in meetings all day. Hopefully, this week will prove to be les stressful than last week!!
Here are some thoughts and figures about Saturday:
1. Score - 233.35 = 3 I's and 4 II's (4 I's and 3 II's would = a superior overall) one I in Music, Percussion, and GE; flags finished 2nd to Dublin.
2. Third place to TW's 234.85...we will see them again in two weeks(9/29) and I expect we will score better then.
3. We are SOOOOOO close! now each member MUST get better, as the judging gets harder each week...many judges stated that there were
"individual errors" - we must each rise to the next level on our portion of the show - marching AND playing
4. We add the 5th song this week as well as more GE (percussion "rack", hopefully new flags, etc).
5. This is MS night this Friday = Friday rehearsal and 1/2 time is dedicated to app 85 8th graders joining us. After the game, we will perform a couple songs for the concession stand, as is our tradition unless we have a contest (which we don't for another week). Speaking of concession stands...
Band Parents and Students- OMBA concession stand needs your help!
Saturday, September 22 the band has been assigned concession duty. We currently have 0 adults and 3 students signed up to help. We have 3 events back to back at Shanahan Stadium. Report time is 2:15 and we will close around 8:30 or so. We could use 2 shifts of volunteers consisting of 6 volunteers each shift. Suggested shift times are 2:15 to 5:30 and 5:15 to 8:30........or you can sign up for the entire time if you like! :) We need at least 2-3 adults per shift and the rest can be students. Students....this is a great time to catch up on your service hours!! Please contact Cheryl Shaw or Cheryl Wimer if you can help.
Thank you very much for your help!
Cheryl Wimer bwimer@insight.rr.com
Cheryl Shaw shawc@battelle.org
We will have final times for 9/29, but preliminary time is around
6:30 pm leave
8:30- 8:45 pm perform
Awards will be around 10 pm. We'll make a decision on whether to stay or not later this week, so you all can make plans. Two other items:
1. washing committee - please hang up the pants in the same manner that you would any pair of pants - we showed the band the process, and they said that some were hung up by their straps.
2. It wasn't a real problem Saturday night, but I try to give you plenty of time to make transportation plans when we perform, and still we have waited this season 1/2 hour to 45 minutes for students to be picked up. The satff and I would really appreciate if you could have plans in place prior to Friday. I even had a couple students call home AFTER arriving, only to be told to ride home with "so and so". But "so and so "had already left!
FYI - home games (4 left) we are usually done around 10-10:30 pm ...seldom earlier, and overtimes cannot be predicted (remember BW last year?)
Away game - Dublin - back to band room around 11 pm
Away game at Mt Vernon (10/19) - back around midnight
Hope all the above helps, and you can help us out this Saturday!

Attached is information for making $$$ during the fundraiser mentioned earlier this week at Rickenbacker. There should be three:
1. Rules, etc, from the sponsoring company - they are professionals at this, so they know what they're doing.
2. W-9 form - due to IRS regulations (I'm so glad they are constantly thinking of us, aren't you?!), we need this filled out EACH time we have a fundraiser for your student's account. You don't need this for FR's for the general fund - concessions, Pride day (October 6, BTW), etc
3. Instructions on how to go to their website and take the instruction video course.
Please contact the band contact person (Norma Johnson normaj@acornfarms.com) before downloading. We have committed numbers via Chip Young (our VP of OMBA), and he has to give them final numbers BY this Monday. If you can help, please contact Mrs. Johnson and then start the process.
Friday:
Full uniform...but have your student wear jeans, or bring them, just in case...the weather is "iffy" and we have been known to wear raincoats, hats and jeans to save our uniforms (remember Kilborne, last year = monsoon)
We will NOT have enough turnaround time for the uniforms to be cleaned, so please remember NOT to take them after the game on Friday. We will do our best to make sure they are hung up properly, as well as all the bags left open (to air out!).
Saturday - please plan on having your student here BEFORE 3:45 - we plan on attendance at 3:50pm - the band room will be open around 2 pm
That's all for now. I'm not really having to work very hard to keep my promise of "daily updates this week"!!
See you at the game/contest.

Last night, at the Music Booster's meeting (Second Monday of each month) this fundraiser was officially "kicked off".
Please read below and respond.
There is an airshow called the Gathering of Mustangs and Legends 2007 at Rickenbacker Airport on Thursday, September 27 thru Sunday, September 30, 8am to 6pm each day. We have been offered the opportunity to staff concessions for a national concessions company. Students and parents may both work to earn money for the student account. This is a great way to get ready for the camp fee hike for next year (probably around $300 total) Opportunities like this (high earning potential) don't come along very often! Take advantage of it! Jobs will include normal concessions activities........pouring pop, wrapping sandwiches, sales at the counter, etc. Students will be earning $8.50 an hour and adults $9.00.
Interested??? Contact our band parent coordinator, Norma Johnson (sooner rather than later as this is open to all music students at the HS). She can be reached the following ways:
Phone - 548-0693
E-Mail - normaj@acornfarms.com
Please be sure to include in the e-mail message the names of the individuals working (indicate which are students and which are adults), the days and hours you would like to work, and a contact number.
Please keep in mind the following:
1. All workers must be 15 years of age or older.
2. All worker must complete a short, online training program.
3. We need to have 1 parent for every 4 students on site.
BR>
4. We need to get SSN for all workers, per OMBA process. If no SSN proceeds go to OMBA General Fund.
5. Remember - That Friday we have an away FB game, and Saturday, an evening contest.
6. There is a need to go through a"training"session online with this company. More later.
This will probably be one of many more messages sent out this week - better to have too much info, than not enough! Tomorrow - Pride day information (Yea!!!)

Good Morning Parents!
Past:
Thank you to all who helped out at the game Friday and especially the "water crew" for the parade yesterday. It was soooo muggy (humid) = we ran out of water by the last 5 blocks, so not too bad. We also got paid (unlike a certain golf course we played for this past summer) and that $$ goes towards the Dutch Valley meal in October - New Philly contest.
Present:
We are in contest week!!! I am delaying this message, in hopes that I can pry a performance time form the host (Highland High School, Sparta Ohio). It is now 2 pm, and no word - the times below are approximate.
Contest week means EVERYONE needs to make a bigger effort than normal to make all the practices and rehearsals they can = better performance. Here is this week:
Monday (today) - Music Boosters 7:30 pm in the band room
Tuesday - Rehearsal after school - 3-5 pm; percussion canceled; flute sectional 5-6 pm
Wednesday - Flags - 3:30 to 5:30 pm
Thursday - Percussion - 3:30 pm to 5:30 pm; sax sectional - 3 to 4 pm(?)
Friday - after school - full band 3-5 pm, dinner, dress and load - game at Big Nut - return time app 10:30 pm
Saturday - leave - APP 4 PM
Perform - ?
Awards - ?
Return to band room - ?
Below is a plea from the keynote combo director. If you have questions, the contact information is there, students - you can talk to former combo members - they are scattered throughout the band, just ask.
Well, with the 2 hour delay, I know allot of education will be going on today, since the students were all expecting a closure = real fun time keeping them focused...but that's why we get the big bucks!
See you tonight!
M Lutz
WE WANT YOU!!
for the
2007-08 Olentangy
Keynotes Combo
What is it?
Combo is the instrumental group that accompanies the Olentangy High School Keynotes for all concerts and competitions.
What's involved in being a member?
As a combo member, you attend all of the combo rehearsals, and the joint rehearsals with the Keynotes prior to competitions and concerts, as well as all of the performances - this includes travel and tours!
What do I need to bring or do?
You need to be on time to rehearsals and performances, bring a willingness to learn and grow as a musician, carry with you a positive team attitude, and be prepared to have a great time!
Why should I join the Keynotes combo?
1.) To continue to grow and challenge yourself as a musician.
2.) To be part of an award-winning organization.
3.) To earn one pass/fail credit towards graduation.
4.) To make new friends you otherwise wouldn't have had the opportunity to make.
5.) To earn service hours towards Service Club membership.
6.) To travel with the group to away competitions and performances and experience new places and things.
7.) To have a blast!
Who works with the combo?
Mrs. Keller, the Keynotes accompanist, is the director for the combo.
What's next?
Come to the meeting!!

Immediately at end of the day bell
In the choir room
Just 15 minutes - we'll be out in time for band rehearsal
We'll be discussing schedules, plans, as well as any issues or questions you may have.
What if I can't attend for some reason?
Then be sure and speak to Mr. Schnipke or Mrs. Keller at school, or send Mrs. Keller an e-mail at cheridyk@hotmail.com to let her know you're interested since the group members will be determined very quickly.
We look forward to seeing you there on Tuesday!!!

Good Thursday Morning parents:
I have been in contact with Delaware's band director, and we have agreed that Summer uniforms are the way to go
Good News - The students will be more comfortable, and safer
Bad News - The outfit will need to be cleaned and ready by Sunday - 1:30 at the band room (the room will be open BY 1 pm)
It has been brought up to me about a problem with October dates in the handbook schedule (thank you for reading !!!) These October dates SHOULD read:
October 26 - FB game with Kilbourne
October 27/28 - State Contest
Last - we need some parents to walk with us for the parade (no uniform) to help keep our ban members watered - we will have water bottles as well as a cart of some kind carrying two 5 gal containers to replenish. If you can help (the more the merrier) please e-mail me BY Friday at 3 pm. Along these lines - please keep watering your ban member = healthy for this weekend, even though it may cool down on Saturday, water is the KEY!
See you Friday and/or Sunday!
M Lutz

Good Monday Morning Parents!!
A lot today, so here goes:
1. Many Thanks for the overwhelming help for the meals on Friday, Housing, and the doughnuts/muffins on Saturday. At least 1/2 of the band ate upon arriving. I have already received two e-mails from YSU students thanking YOU for your hospitality, etc. I believe it was a real good experience for our students, and the YSIU band got a kick out of sitting in the stands one more time on a Friday Night. Many thanks to Mrs Shjaw and Mrs King who stepped up and spearheaded this.
2. A reminder - all uniforms are due back to the band room BY Friday at 4 pm....than band room is occupied from 7:20 am until 12:15pm each day, as well as at the end of the day.
3. Water!!! It is still summer (even though the month is September), and it is trying to hold on! - 90's this week (including Friday - more on this later, after talking with the Delaware band director) = keep watering the band members. We will today during practice as well.
4. I have put this in blue, not because it is new, but many have not really read the band camp letter, nor the hand book. We have a parade this Sunday - the Little Brown Jug Parade - performing for app 20,000 people over a 2.4 mile trek. It starts at the Delaware county fairgrounds (off Pennsylvania Ave), and ends at the same place. We will take buses, leaving app 1:30 pm in SUMMER UNIFORMS. We will be arriving back here at app 5:30 pm. Please understand, as per our handbook, 2 weeks written notice is needed to be CONSIDERED an excused absence. I have received at least 4 today (2 written, 2 verbal) and all are unexcused. This is not a volunteer event - I only do that if it is last minute (little bear) or on a school night(max & erma's). Please take this, as well as the contests coming up, as mandatory....because they are. Please understand, that I am not saying that the student cannot do what is conflicting with the band's commitment...it just won't be excused. Please read that portion of the handbook - it covers what is excused, as well as consequences. If you still have questions after reading this, please don't hesitate to e-mail me.
I have also attached a copy of what is posted at the front of the band room - this week's schedule. it does include this Sunday's parade.
We do not know where we are in the parade ( that will determine our return time), nor our time on NEXT Saturday at Highland contest...on both of these - as soon as I know, you'll know.
Sincerely,
M Lutz

Sorry parents,
but this couldn't wait - please check your schedules and see if you can't help out at one or both. (Below)
M Lutz
Good Morning!
I am in need of volunteers for two games this week. I hope you can help
Wednesday, August 29. This is a 4:15 report time for a 5:00 8th grade football game. This is a new change. I know it is HS curriculum night, but I think it can still be workable. And
Saturday, September 1. Report time is 12:15 for JV and V boys soccer. I know this interferes with OSU football, but if you don't have tickets.............we can use you! :)
I currently have 0 volunteers for each event and I need your help. You can e-mail me at bwimer@insight.rr.com
Thank you!

Good Monday Morning Parents:
We're getting ready for this week:
Full Uniforms and the YSU Band! Plus the hope of rebounding (both band and team) from last Friday Night. The band will have to waif until AFTER the game!!
This week's schedule:
Monday - nothing
Tuesday - Band from 3-5 pm, percussion - 5:30 to 7:30
Wednesday - Flags - 3:30 - 5 :30
Thursday - Percussion - 3:30 - 5:30
Friday - band - 3 - 5, dinner, suit up, then game on!
Saturday - hosts have their charges back BY 7 am at the band room...Let's not make them late for the game.
A side note - we are very close...and thank you who have offered to take 9 and above students (what you got...a mini bus?), but we need app 5-10 houses to PLEASE help out. One more time for the e-mail - Mrs. King - "Debbie King"
We are sooo close, let's "get er done" today!
Tat's all for now - good job on watering the students - we didn't have ANY go down during the game or 1/2 time! And yes, it was hot - but 78 this Friday with a low of 60!!! Football Weather !!
See you Friday!
M Lutz
Thursday, August 23, 2007 2:21 PM
Good HOT afternoon parents:
I'll do this in outline form - it's all reminders and pleas:
1. keep the water flowing! I had a student tell me today that she "won't drink allot of water - it'll make me go to the bathroom allot". Better that than a trip to the hospital! I cannot stress enough how much fluids these kids lose when rehearsing. Today, after only 30 minutes, most were soaked...add stress from a performance, as well as being in the heat for hours before = bad situation, unless they are already carrying plenty of water in their system. Do it for them!
2. We are sill in need of parents to step up and wash uniforms for their student's section. I was told we needed at least 8 more to help out in this. Remember, we now have over 120 uniforms to wash ( flags and FC's take care of their own). email Mrs. Karl - by next Wednesday PLEASE rkarl@insight.rr.com
3. Yes, here we go again - we have app 90 of the YSU housed and that's using only 36 families. If we can get just 20 more to help, Mrs King could then sleep at night again (and me too!). Please e-mail her also by next Wednesday (she will be gone Wed and part of Thursday) - so she can assign YSU's to houses BEFORE Friday night = quick and painless after the game. "Debbie King"
See you tomorrow at the big win of OHS over Scioto!!
M Lutz
Wednesday, August 22, 2007 7:16 AM
Good Wednesday morning parents:
Finally! The first day is here, trumpeted in by the thunder and lightning! Now we will have to deal with the heat...at least until this weekend. For some reason, band was moved up by one period ( starts at 9:55 and ends at 10:35) = cooler part of the day. It won't help us on Friday, but what can you do? Just keep them watered - I can't stress how important this is!
The real reason for this e-mail is to follow up on the housing for YSU. I was informed that 1/2 of their band has a bed, the other 1/2 doesn't. We need app 30 people that can take 2 college students...remember, they will need only a place to stay (and maybe breakfast). That's all. Please don't fret about entertaining these people - they will have had a long day, be real tired, and have a longer day to follow. They just need a place to sleep. Please e-mail Mrs. King as soon as possible (ASAP) so she can start with the assignments. Her e-mail:
dfdwking@insight.rr.com
Please help out. Many parents state that they would like to help (in concessions, etc), but don't have the time to commit. Here is a different type of help - we don't get any $$ for it, but we will enhance a really cool experience for our students.
If you have any questions on this subject, or anything else, please feel free to e-mail me back.
Sincerely,
M Lutz
Monday, August 20, 2007 7:56 AM
Good Monday Morning,
Just a heads up - we are reconfiguring all our computers at OHS, and some data is missing, can't access our e-mails, etc. So if you're waiting to hear from a te4acher - that could be why. For some reason, MY computer is still working, so I'm not complaining!!!
Items for this week:
1. Gonna be a hot one! please see to it that you band member drinks plenty of water (sodas, etc have sodium=defeats the purpose). Thurs and Friday predicted to be in the 90's....we WILL plan on Summer uniform. Many students have a poor concept of "white shoes".
Mom and Dad, could you please help in this? If we aren't all in the same uniform=look bad (remember Memorial day?). Thanks!
2. If you can help with the maintaining of our uniforms, please e-mail Mrs. Karl at rkarl@insight.rr.com
3. If your child ordered shoes at camp - please make checks out to OMBA for $35.00 ASAP - we will probably need them next week - 8/31 home game
4. I am sorry that the BKOM information was incorrect - if your student is in band for the year = co-curricular - $20.00 PTP
if your student is in MB only (flags) = extra curricular - $50.00 PTP
Sorry for the mix up.
That's all I have for this week. Please pay attention to the message below:
M Lutz
This is a message form Mrs. King about housing. Please help us out here. We have 135 members, we should be able to take this on.
Thank you to the 20 families that have opened their homes to Youngstown State University marching band on Friday August 31 to Sept.1. We need 100+ more beds. The plan is to put 2 of the same gender band members in each home. Please provide a bed per student (or a double /queen/ king bed for them to share) and breakfast and return to the high school by 6:45a.m. or 7 a.m. on Saturday Sept.1. Please contact me by email or phone with how many students you will, house their gender and your name.
Thanks,
Debbie King

Hi all:
Good Monday Morning!
Well, here we are, the last full week off of the summer ( I can hear the sighs of the students from here...as well as the cheers from the parents! LOL).
Nothing new, but just some reminders:
Today - 6:15 pm - pictures in the stadium - full uniform - band room will be open by 5 pm for changing - anyone who ordered shoes, $35.00 = you get the ones you ordered...PLEASE try them on - once there are grass stains on them, they can't go back. For those who have yet to order - wear black shoes for the pic.
7:30 pm tonight - probably in the choir room - music boosters - we plan on forming the committee for the YSU band - dinner and housing...many of you expressed interest in helping out - please try to attend. We are also forming our Friday night meal committee - it starts next week before the Dublin Scioto game
Aug 14 (tomorrow) - rehearsal ON the FIELD (weather permitting - it didn't last week!) - 5 to 7 pm
Aug 16 (Thursday) - rehearsal On the FIELD as well - 5-7 pm
Aug 21 (next Tuesday) - last 5-7 rehearsal
Looks like this week will be more "normal" as to temperatures, but that doesn't mean that we can forget about hydration - keep them watered down Mom and Dad = healthy students!
See you tonight!
M Lutz
Monday, August 06, 2007 11:19 AM
Hi all:
Yes, we're back and (hopefully) recuperated! It was warm, but not like it's going to be this week....Mom and Dad - make sure your band person hydrates!! = 8-10 glasses of water a day, and especially BEFORE performances (1:30 tomorrow) = staying healthy.
Band camp went well, and we have set the dates for next year for both OHS and Orange HS - Aug 3-9. If the new director doesn't want this, then they can cancel - it's easier to cancel than to add, that's why we did it. Plus, most of our bands will know each other, and there are many "bonding" experiences they can do together.; Since our music boosters are planning on staying together, what better way to start off the season, than together?
Other news -the main entrance to OHS is closed August 6,7,and 8 - repaving - you must enter by way of Shanahan - and be careful there - allot of construction is going on there as well.
Something else that is NOT confirmed yet - Youngstown State University band has contacted us about hosting them for the August 31 - September 1 time. They will need 125 homes ( or some of you can take 2-3 maybe?), possible meal for them on Friday, they would then perform at our game with Thomas Worthington (when - still working on that), and transportation back to OHS to go to OSU and get thumped (come on, you know it's gonna happen, doesn't mean we can't be nice to their band before the massacre (too strong? maybe). As soon as I learn more, you'll be the first to get the info. I am looking for someone to coordinate the rooming, etc. or maybe a committee - we can talk about it at the 13th OMB meeting - 7:30 pm
We're still looking for two (2) middle school band members (8th or 7th) who wants to get into the fair for free - to hold our banner during the parade. They just need their MS band shirts, and a pair of Khaki shorts and white socks and shoes. First two to e-mail me back is in...if no one does, then parents or staff will be "tapped" for the job.
Upcoming dates:
August 7 (tomorrow) - noon - unloading of nonessentials from camp out of the truck
1:30 pm - leave for the Fair
4:00 pm - parade down the main route of the fair (follow the sky ride) - SUMMER UNIFORM (white shoes!!!!)
5:00 pm - done, students released to eat and ride
9:30 pm - back on the bus
10:00 pm back at OHS
August 8 - Wednesday
4 pm - meet at OHS band room - make sure all is well with the truck and last minute loading
4:30 pm leave for Columbus Zoo
7 pm - performance - stand and blast - no movement, but flags can perform as well - mostly stands music and songs from show- SUMMER UNIFORM
8 pm - load and leave
9 pm - return back to OHS
August 9 - Thursday
5-7 pm rehearsal on field - see how much we've forgotten (Keep up on the music!)
August 13 - Monday
6:15 pm - pictures - group and ind. - for program and yearbook - band room will be open by 5:30 pm to dress in FULL w/o gloves, plumes, and in some cases - shoes...wear black shoes of some sort if you don't have the official shoes
August 14, 16 and 21 - regular rehearsal - 5- 7 pm
After the 21st - all rehearsals (Tuesday and Friday) will be from 3-5 pm - percussion and flags' extra practices - get with your advisor as to days and times
Wow, and we thought band camp was "busy"! Just FYI - there will be other weeks a busy this season - but that's what keeps us young! LOL
Stay Cool!

I'm Back!
Just when you thought it was safe to check your e-mail!! LOL Last week was uneventful - and that's a good thing when driving from here to Texas and back...but very HOT! Yes, I know, it was hot here as well, but when you wake up to 85 degrees and 89% humidity, then it old real fast!. But here I am, so let's get to it!
One thing new, Picture day has been changed - to Aug 9 - schedule will be:
5 pm - arrive and rehearse music inside
5:30 pm - put on FULL UNIFORM
6:15 - group pics in stadium, then individuals as well as small groups - new people will be sized for shoes
When you are done - you may leave
One other item - the cost for camp is $250 (same as last three years) and I believe the fundraiser $$ has been calculated...if you are unsure, please e-mail Rick Barnes (our overworked treasurer) at kimrickbarnes@aol.com
Tuesday and Thursday - 5-7 pm - last week of open band rooms - app 45 minutes in, then out for marching - bring water
Next Monday, July 23 - 11 am - leadership training - by invitation only (sectionleaders, squad leaders, officers only) Percussion camp starts
. Monday, July 23 - 5-7 precamp for whole band
. Tuesday, July 24 - percussion camp continues, precamp 5-7 pm
. Wednesday, July 25 - percussion camp still going, precamp 5-7 pm
. Thursday, July 26 - yes, percussion is still at it!...precamp 5-7 pm
. Friday, July 27 - last day for percussion camp, precamp from 5-7 pm, then load truck/trailer, it goes up to camp
SATURDAY, JULY 28 - 6:15 TO 8 AM - SIGN IN TO CAMP - 8:30 AM -ON FIELD!!!
I can't believe that in less than 12 days, camp will be going on. Where did summer go? The stores already have their "back to school/class" ads out. I know - many of you are saying "Hurray!!" but we are saying, "but there's still allot to do!" I guess we'll have to kick it up a notch.

Monday, July 02, 2007 3:27 PM
Good Monday Afternoon Parents:
I hope all is well with you and yours, and you're looking forward to this Wednesday's parade, as well as the 2007 season starting!
Anyway, below is part of the letter I received from the parade committee, please make note of where to enter and exit the shopping center. The band will meet at the First Merit bank - but you'll probably have to drop them off, and pick them up at Orange MS. The UNIFORM IS SUMMER - SHORTS, SHIRTS,White socks, and PLEASE - Shoes that are at least 70% white = uniformity.
Rehearsals are from 5-6 today and tomorrow, report time is 9:30 am (at the bank) and 1st real practice for the season is from 5-6:30 pm on Thursday. The rest of the summer (except for July 23) rehearsals will be from 5-7 pm. Remember - once school starts, rehearsals go to 3-5 pm.
Also, remember that if the weather is bad, then we'll decide at the site, not in your kitchen. Please don't call my cell, as last year, we decided against marching, and of course, 20 minutes later, the sun came out! But as I've always said, I will err on the side of caution when it comes to the health and safety of your band members, and I don't apologize for this at all. (this goes for bandcamp, trips, and even whether we wear full vs summer - safety first!).
That's all for now. We have hard copies of tall the school songs, as well as part 5 here at the band room. I hope to have the rest of the contest show run off by Thursday, for those who had trouble with our website, or their printer.
Sincerely,
M Lutz
PS - no update next week.
You are #31 in the Orange Township Business Association (OTBA) Orange Celebration 2007.
Parade formation begins at 8:45 am along the back of the Oak Creek Shopping Center, rain or shine. The 2 mile long parade begins promptly at 10:00 a.m. S. Old State will be closed at 9:00 a.m.
· Enter at Cameron Ave off of Polaris Parkway between KFC and Donatos Pizza.
OTBA volunteers will be in Orange t-shirts and will direct you to where you need to go.
· Please tell ALL the people in your entry these guidelines. Our volunteers have been verbally abused every year when they have to turn away cars at E. Powell (by First Merit Bank) and the shopping center. This is the Start of the parade. We can not have cars coming in at this end it creates too much chaos.
· ABSOLUTELY NO VEHICLES WILL BE ALLOWED BEHIND THE SHOPPING CENTER, except those vehicles that are IN the parade. It is imperative that you respect this request. There will be over 2000 people behind the shopping centers, and safety is a must!
· If you are passing out candy, please dont throw it, hand it out or gently toss. Please no peanuts. We had issues last year with some children having allergic reactions.
The parade will end at The Orange Middle School on Orange Road
Thursday, June 28, 2007 12:58 PM
Hi all!
Well, we're here waiting to get started on the rehearsal for the LIL Bear Gig, and really need to pass on the below:
1. Rehearsals - during the school year - 5-7 is wrong - they will all be 3pm - 5pm on Tuesday, and 3- ? on Friday, and then we eat, and then the game.
2. Cost for the summer uniform - is APP. $45.00, not 35 - The store called me and informed me....sorry, keeping track of the rising costs of summer shirts ($18.00 - used to be 15) and the shorts has not been near the top of my list - and the store has corrected me. I am sorry for any confusion this may have caused.
3. Pertaining to the above - the store has many sizes in stock - they know this "run"on the shirts and shorts will be coming, and they stock up.
4. DCI IS happening in Columbus on Thursday night - so we will be ending that night's rehearsal early (6:30 pm) - this should allow plenty of time to get to Crew stadium - just a thought - purchase your tickets online - save time!
Whew!!
I hope that's all - reminder - next week Monday and Tuesday - 5 to 6 pm parade rehearsal - fight song and "God Bless America". More next week.
Pray it doesn't rain until AFTER 5 pm today ( so we can do this gig!)

Monday, June 25, 2007 11:39 AM
Good Monday Morning Parents:
There have been a couple recurring questions I need to answer here:
1. The show music ONLY is on the band website - school songs will be available starting this Thursday in the band room ( rehearsal - see below)
2. percussion music is custom written by Mr Bell - please contact him as to the show music
3. This Thursday's gig is for winds and percussion only - flags will join in for the Fourth of July rehearsals and parade
. Schedule for Thursday- June 28 - SUMMER UNIFORM!! - please , the complete summer uniform - there will be media
. 1:30 pm - rehearsal, in the band room, on stands music as well as schools songs (esp - Sloopy...Jim Tressel will be there)
. 2:30 pm - load truck and bus for Lil Bear golf Club
. 3:30 to 4 pm) play music
. 4:30 pm - we load up and return to OHS
4. Due to a communication error, the Madison Scouts will NOT be here on the 5-6 of July - they have procured housing at Newark HS.
Therefore - There WILL be an "Open Band Room" (rehearsal) from 5-7 pm on the 5th of July, as originally planned - make it if you can!
5. ALSO - attached is the long awaited band camp letter - (you will need adobe reader to access this - if you don't, there will be hard copies at the July rehearsals) please hold onto the forms until registration for camp - if you give them to me, I'll lose them. Also a reminder that sizing for the full uniforms will begin at the open band rooms through post camps - try to make as many of the precamps and open BR's that you can so you'll be all set for the season!
That's all for now (whew! that's plenty!). See you soon!
M Lutz

Good Monday Afternoon Parents,
Well we have had one student move to Colorado, but another one move in. Welcome to rodney Tucker from Westerville Central (trombone)!
Now to the pep band "thing"
. First, Freshmen, we didn't bother you with this - it's a little intense for your first performance with OHS, but if you wish, here are the particulars:
June 28 - 1:30 pm - rehearsal, in the band room, on stands music as well as schools songs (esp - sloopy...Jim Tressel will be there)
. 2:30 pm - load truck and buses for Lil Bear golf Club
. ???(around 3:30 to 4 pm) play music
. 4:30 pm - we load up and return to OHS
All the above is in Summer Uniform - 100% - no MS shirts, black shoes, etc!
We have had a good response from the brass, but only 2 percussion, and a couple ww - no saxes?! (there are 24 total!). We also need low voices (tuba/bari sax). As of now we have 15 signed up - we have room for another 25, so either e-mail me back that you can do this, and/or show up on Thursday, the 28th!
Next week the band camp letter will be coming out, so look for it - should be out before the 28th.

good Friday Morning!
Well, I have to get this out to you - time is of the essence:
June 28 - Thursday
- We have been contacted to perform for the "grand opening" of Little Bear golf course on Old State, near Powell Rd.
We would meet at 1:30 pm to rehearse, the load bus and truck - play from 3:30 to 4 pm, and then leave. They will make a donation to the band, and you'll get to see Jim Tressel (he's hitting the first ball). Summer uniform.
Please, If you can make this - e-mail me back BY 12 noon on MONDAY! If you can't - don't send anything. I will be getting back to you on Monday about whether we can do this or not. If you see any graduated seniors from this year, they also are eligible to help us out, but I don't have their e-mails.
Also, We have chosen our section leader/squad leaders - they have received a separate e-mail. If you did not get this e-mail - please understand that we had MANY qualified people to lead, and just because you don't have a title, doesn't mean that you cannot still help lead! The "unofficial" leaders many times have more impact than the official ones. Thank you for "sticking you necks out" and applying for these positions, I will remember that you stepped up.
Don't forget - e-mail me back if you can do the golf coursed gig.

Downloading both the printed songs as well as the audio will help the students practicing.
Upcoming "stuff"
Music boosters - tonight - 7:30 pm - OHS band room - new parents, this would be a great time to come - no upcoming fundraisers to be volunteered for!! (LOL)
July 2, 3, - 5-6 pm - rehearsals for July 4th parade
That's all for today. I won't be e-mailing the next couple weeks, so you won't be upset when you don't get a monthly e-mail. I'll try to get something out July 2nd, unless something earth shattering happens - like confirmation of the corps coming - still waiting on that.
ENJOY THIS TIME!!! IT WILL NEVER BE HERE AGAIN!

The parade will end at Orange MS.
5th of July - THIS IS A CHANGE - we will spend some time at OHS preparing it for the arrival of the Madison Scouts Drum and Bugle corps - they will be staying here the 5th, rehearsing on our field the 6th - open to band members! - this is a once in a lifetime opportunity - take advantage of it! Just a note - this has yet to be confirmed...as soon as it is - you'll be the first to know!! If this does occur, then rehearsal that night is canceled.
July 10 and 12 - rehearsals - 5-7 pm - open band room

Well,
Here we are...this is the first e-mail to the band of 2007-08. I hope all went well with the DC trip, as well as Memorial Day (and parade).
Now, the HS band is getting ready for graduation, and both MS's are also preparing for their graduations and performances. Does it EVER settle down, you're asking yourself. Yes, the month of June...after that, we start in earnest! For those of you who haven't been getting the e-mails:
July
2 - 5-6 pm - parade practice - 4th of July for Orange Twp - songs - Fight song and God Bless (part 5 from contest show)
3 - 5-6 pm - parade practice - 4th of July for Orange Twp - songs - Fight song and God Bless (part 5 from contest show)
4 parade - (east on old Powell rd, north on S Old State, right on Orange, finish at Orange MS) - report time - 9:30 am and parade beginning- Powel and old Powel -
summer uniform - official band shirt, khaki shorts (both at Egelhoff's - Lazelle and 23), white socks and 75% white tennis shoes
5 - first band rehearsal - 5-7 pm, OHS band room
10, 12, 17, 19 - ensuing band rehearsals - 5-7 pm, OHS band room ALWAYS plan on marching, and trying to make as many as you can!!
The third week of July is precamp - mandatory =must have a note to be considered for excused absence - Mom and Dad, these are when we really get down to the "nitty gritty' on teaching how to move, moving and playing, etc. Plus, we also are conditioning for camp - w/o this, the student may experience problems at camp - both band wise and health wise, and we all don't want that!
Remember - with Memorial day parade over, we have the marching band instruments available for practice - send me an e-mail on which instrument type you need, and what day/time you plan on picking it up, and we'll do our best to have everything inventoried and ready for you and your student!
