Director's 2006-2007 Season Weekly Updates

Contest Drill

Good Morning parents!

What a past week we all had !
Music boosters on Monday
Band Concert on Tuesday
Dinner and awards on Thursday
Keynote Cabaret on Friday and Saturday

This week is no different - the percussion ensemble ( they've been meeting winter and spring at night) are performing for Shanahan and Orange MS's this week during school.

Choirs and Strings both have concerts this week.

And the "marching band" has a parade next Monday in Powell (map attached) - they need to be there BY 9:30 am at Powell Center (look for our truck) - and don't forget - we play the National Anthem for a ceremony at the end. The weather looks like 70's with a chance of rain (like every day!) - uniform is summer band shirts, jeans (clean, blue, no holes) white shoes and socks, if needed - sweatshirt should also be of "olentangy themed".

This is also the last e-mail for our graduating seniors. What a year they have led us on - states in Marching Band, great performances at solo and ensemble, and great strides from the February concert to the May one. I know I speak for the band and staff that this class will be sorely missed. But I know they'll keep in touch, and hopefully, continue to perform at their respective colleges - no matter how large or small, there's always a place for a great player, and that's what these graduates are!

Good Friday Morning Parents:
Wow!
What a good time last night was. Thank you ALL for coming, bringing you excellent food dishes, and spending some time honoring our young people. It was a pleasure to host this, and it went under the time we planned - we were done around 8:50 pm!!!(that comes from good planning! LOL).

The next thing up on the docket is the Powell Memorial Parade. I'll try to get a map out to you again next week - parade route and staging area.
After the parade, we have been asked to perform the Star Spangled Banner for the ground-breaking of a Veteran's Center in Powell - right at the site of the end of the parade. This will add hopefully no more than 30 minutes to our time commitment, and what's 1/2 hour compared to the cause? I feel it's the least we can do. Even those against the war, states they're "for the troops"...now's our time to "put up or shut up" .
OK, I'll stop preaching.

The following week is the graduation band. Either of these will fulfill the time and performance requirements of the final exam for band. If a student cannot attend the parade due to family obligations, and cannot get on the list for graduation band, then the alternative is the band exam - 100 multiple choice an 5 essay - a toughie to say the least. There have been some questions about this, so I hope this note will clear any inquiries. This year, since it is the last at Germain (it has been sold, and is slated for demolition in the fall), we are allowing an expansion of the graduation band - so any student is to see me if there is a problem...but we must put a lid on numbers - there isn't room for 100!!

That's all for now....See you at the parade!

Good Monday Morning Parents:

Wow, from the ridiculous to the sublime - last week, nothing...this week - every night! especially if you have a string student or Keynote singer or instrumentalist! Here's what's going on this week:

tonight - Music Boosters - OHS band room - 7:30 pm
Keynotes on the stage in theater

Tuesday night - 6:30 set up, 7 pm performance - band concert - Jazz, Concert, Wind Ensemble

Wednesday night - Strings Awards Banquet - commons
Keynotes on stage in theater

Thursday night - 6:15 pm - Band Banquet starts in OHS commons, then at app 7:30, we move to theater

Friday and Saturday night - keynotes' Cabaret Night(s) - in OHS theater - tickets $10 - adults....$5 - students and seniors

Sunday - 1 pm - flag corps officer meeting, followed by full flag corps rehearsal - OHS band room

See? I told you it was full. Now to old business:

1 - sheds - only have one bid so far - they close at 7 pm, Thursday. Announcement at awards; the old one cannot be burned - EPA and local fire laws = working on alternative

2. Still need a couple junior/sophomore parents available to help with dinner - coordinate drinks and arrange tables/food

This end of this school year is FAST approaching. Senior parents - next week will be your last weekly e-mail update - we're not being mean, just trying to save memory space, as well as not bothering you. The 4th of July parade IS open to any recent graduates, but that's all.
"tear" - both happy and sad.

Good Thursday Morning parents:

We need to move on a couple things quickly:

1. Thank you so much for all who have volunteered to help tomorrow's concessions at the LAX showdown here w/Liberty

2. We HAVE to get rid of the younger shed, so here's the particulars:
A. purchased at the State Fair in app 2002
B. Has a shelf
C. We will have a "silent" auction, starting today, and culminating on Thursday, at the Awards Banquet. You need not be present to win, and you can either e-mail me your bid, or send in a hard copy with you student. Bids will be taken until 7:00 pm, Thursday,May 17. Cost of moving is at the NEW owner's expense, and must be moved by June 1. The $$ raised, will go towards the bus/dinner bill for New Philadelphia trip.
Questions? - feel free to e-mail me. PLEASE, only serious bids. We bought it for app $1,600.
Interested in the old shed? see me - we'll make you an offer you can't refuse.

3. Next Tuesday's concert will be in concert uniform, and the jackets/ties will stay here at the school after. That way, less opportunity to forget!

That's all for this week. See you at the concert - especially you 8th graders - come and here both bands as well as the Jazz Ensemble!

M Lutz

SORRY! - I have forgotten to mention the upcoming percuission concert -June 2 - at 2pm and 7 pm, OHS theater - see a percussion member for tickets

Good Monday Morning!

Well, finally a decent weather day (Sunday) and another today. Since today is going to be sooooo nice - maybe you can find the time to come over and help out the concession stand (OHS Stadium) at 5 pm and close around 7:30 pm. If you can't be there the whole time, anytime during that 2 1/2 hour period will help greatly! If you can help please e-mail Mrs. Wimer at bwimer@insight.r.com

Today, there is the long awaited percussion tryouts. This is for the battery (on field) percussion, as well as the sideline (front ensemble) percussion...this show demands much of BOTH, so please plant to have your son/daughter there at their previously signed up time. times are form app 4:30 pm to 8;30 pm in the OHS band room.

The only other thing going on this week is prom, (Saturday). Our concert is in two weeks (the 15th at 7 pm) and the awards' banquet (the 17th at 6:15 pm).

Have a good week, and enjoy the warming up weather! Finally!!!

Where - Dinner in Cafeteria, Awards in Theater

This is a semi formal event for the students ( many photo opts) so we ask the young people to "dress up" for this - there is no such requirement for the adults. This is a nice evening to get together, meet other parents, and review the year, as well as one last time to embarrass our seniors! Please try to come - you'll be glad you did ( and so will you child!)

The show for 2007 has been chosen by next year's seniors - "1945" - a swing show that ends with patriotic music...last performed in 2001, this is the first repeat show I have done, this will be interesting. The HS band ALREADY has the music, and the MS's will be on the way. I am currently scanning them into my computer, and will send an electronic file to Mrs. Cabral Hever and Mrs. Straub. I am also working on getting the recordings to Mr Moore, so they can be put on the web site (olentangyband.com) as well as the sheet music ( in case you lose yours this summer!).
When that's up and running, I'll let you know

Hope you long weekend went well, and warm weather is soon to follow!

Good April morning parents:
Yes, believe it or not - we are starting our last quarter - the "downhill" run towards summer. Spring break is over (boo hoo) and It's supposed to be 80 degrees tomorrow! (of course - we're in Ohio = 40's the rest of the week). We will be doing some changes in the schedule for the already mentioned dates. Some are new, others old - I'm sorry if I repeat myself, but better to be told twice, than not at all.
Here is April and May:

April
9 - Music Boosters - Band room 7:30 pm all (including incoming 9th grade parents) are welcome to attend
12 - Jazz Ensemble at Tiffin - whole day return time app 11 pm
17 - need for concession helpers
16 - Field Commander tryouts - may be moved due to sports conflicts - 4 pm
23 - need for concession helpers
30 - need for concession helpers

May
5 - Prom
14 - music boosters - band room - 7:30 pm
15 - Band Concert - Theater - 7 pm
17 - Band awards banquet - 6:15 pm (dinner) 7:30 pm (awards) More later
28 - Powell Memorial Day Parade - Summer shirts and Jeans - 9:30 am

If you can help with concessions - please e-mail me back...we did have a wonderful response for tomorrow's needs, so let's see if we can do the same with the rest of those (above) in April.

Have a nice (short) week!

Parents:

two things -

1. The May concert is confirmed for 7 pm on the Tuesday, the 15th of May. We will be done BY 8 pm (someone else has graciously allowed this to occur, and needs the stage back - teen advisors).
This concert will encompass the concert band, Wind ensemble, and a couple senior features, plus a combined song at the end (tradition). Concert uniform, and then the students will eave their jackets and ties at the school.

2. We are in need of help for the spring concessions! The band's first one that we are responsible for is April 3 ( Tuesday of the week we come back from break!) It is a track meet, so the attendance is a little larger than some events. You need to be there around 4:30 pm. Please, if you can help, even for part of the time, e-mail me back or have your student sign you up on the forms posted in the band room. The other dates are:
April 17 - Girls' LAX - report time around 5 pm
April 23 - Boys' LAX - " " " 5 pm
April 30 - at SMS concession stand - SMS Boys' LAX - report app 4:45 pm

Remember, ANY help you can give will be greatly appreciated, and as the band gets larger ( 140 + this next year), we need all the $$$ we can!

Thanks in advance!

Good Monday Morning parents:
A special thanks to all who tried out for our Flag Corps, and to the 4 who stepped out and tried out for officer.

REMINDER - Jazz ensemble CD's or tapes due BY April 20. The music and instructions are with you director.

April 12 - the OHS Jazz Ensemble will be traveling to Tiffin University for the day - performance at 1:30 pm, master classes, judging, and evening concert.

April 19 - Field Commander tryouts - after school - (app 4:15 pm) in the band room

Sometime in May - band's spring concert - we're working on a date, as soon as it's solid, I'll get back to you

May 24 - Band Award banquet - dinner at 6:15 in the commons, awards 7:30 in the theater. More later.

May 28 - Powell Memorial Parade - summer shirt and Jeans - 9:30 am - 11 am - more later

June 2 - Graduation at 2 pm; Grad band reports at 1:30 pm - more later

Most of the above are just "head's up".
Most times, and some dates have NOT been finalized. As soon as they are - you'll be the first to know.

We will have a another meeting of the Juniors about next year's show. Hopefully, they will decide on a theme, and we can move on.

That's about all for now: Enjoy the spring break!

M Lutz

Monday, March 12, 2007 9:22 AM

Good Morning Parents:
Hopefully, the time change didn't impact you too hard? It sure seems awful dark out, and at 8 am!
Let's talk band:

Schedule this week:
All this week - 2 hour delay schedule - during those two hours:

testing for 9 and 10,
Juniors scheduling,
and the rest arriving at 9 ish

Monday (tonight) - Music Boosters - 7:30 pm
Wednesday and Thursday - flag tryouts - 3:30 pm to 6 pm (finals on Thursday).

Jazz Ensemble tryout information will be out by the end of this week. I will get the instructions and music out to both MS's as well as to the HS by Friday...students will then have 4 weeks to practice and record and get the tape/CD back to me. All this will be on the instruction sheet.

Now, as to this past Friday. Any one who was there knows that the judges were not "giving" anything away. Break downs:
1st band (host ) - II, II, I SR - I = I
2nd band - IV, III, III, SR - II = III
3rd band - II, III, III, SR - II = II
Concert band - III, III, II - SR - I = II
Next band - festival class - no rating
Wind Ensemble - II, II, II SR - I = II

I will grudgingly agree with the concert band ratings - we had issues with the intonation, and balance and blend. I would have given the band between a one and a two - because it's not state, it's district, and they did play well!
I know I'm biased....on the side of the students, no matter which school they go to.

As to Wind Ensemble - they were robbed. This is a recurring theme with OHS bands, and I realize it may sound like a "broken record". But I have the TALENT of choosing sites that are hard - Thomas Worhington last year, Ben Logan, and you all remember State MB at Dublin last year? You remember, the panel who didn't give a ONE overall ALL DAY!? See - real talent. If you were there Friday night - You got to experience a High school band really playing the music. The judge's agreed, they just wanted more.

Disappointed? Yes...end of the world? no. But the wind ens got a life lesson on Friday - sometimes things don't go right, no matter how well you do (perform). We will continue to grow and get better...keep the last Sunday of April free (more later)

Have a nice quiet (and warmish) week...see you tonight?

M Lutz

Whew!
What a weekend! - 7 performances of the musical in 6 days! Glad it's finally over, but sad at the same time. Does that make me crazy? Hey, I can see your heads nodding vigorously!!
This week also has it's moments:

Today - planning meeting for Juniors for next year's show...yes, it's that time of year
Wednesday - Parent teacher conferences, part 2
Friday - Flag corps will still meet! (minus the ones in HS bands) - 3:30 to 5:30 pm
Adjudicated event (contest) at Ben Logan HS - still room if you want to ride with us. It's always an adventure! three years ago, we got lost both going AND coming! Now that takes talent! Return app 11 pm.
Next Wednesday and Thursday (March 14 & 15) - flag corps tryouts - 3:30 to 5:30 pm

By the end of the month - Jazz ensemble tryout materials will be delivered to each MS as well as the HS - these will be taped (or CD, etc) tryouts to be handed in in April. results will be posted app 5 days later = schedule changes.

For those of you really looking ahead, these are the tentative competition dates for the fall of 07:

Sept 15 - Highland MB Festival - Sparta, Ohio - 4 pm start time
September 29 - Westerville Central MB Classic - 5 pm start time
October 13 - Thomas Worthington Preview of Champions - 5 pm start time
October 20 - New Philadelphia invitational - leave early afternoon - meal on way (Amish), commercial buses - we are the defending champion here, so it's a matter of PRIDE!

That's all I can think of for now. Don't forget - music boosters next Monday at 7;30 pm in the band room.

Good Thursday Morning Parents:
Attached is the information sheet for contest in (PDF).
Ben Logan HS
6609 Ste Rte 47 E
Bellefontaine, Ohio 43311

We are looking for a couple parents to accompany us on our trek to BLHS next Friday afternoon - we plan on leaving app 4:30 pm with both bands. If you plan on going, and can help us out, please feel free to respond.

This just in:
Band Camp and Football Camp are the same time this year. I have talked with coach T at length, and we have worked out this compromise:

The FB student goes to band camp on Saturday, Sunday, and Monday morning. I will arrange with a couple parents (or maybe a bus) for the students to go to FB camp, and they will remain there for the rest of the time.

Truth - they will be behind in both fb and band, but this way they can still do both. In Fb, they will have to hit he ground running, while in band, they will miss the second 1/2 of the show, and have to learn at an accelerated rate. We both (coaches and our staff) will do what they can to facilitate this, but I want you -parents and students- to know this going in. Will this affect playing time (in both)? It could - it depends on how fast they learn the FB system, and how fast they learn the show. In a perfect world, they do both. Please, if you have any questions - do not hesitate to ask either me or the coach.

Thursday, February 15, 2007 12:55 PM

Hi all,
Yes, I had to come in to OHS because my computer won't allow me online! SO here's why I came in to send you this:

1. The paper due tomorrow has been postponed to NEXT Friday, February 23 - 19 days after it was first assigned. I am so sorry about this - I really wanted you to do this while the performance was fresh! So much for that idea.

2. This is for Pit Orchestra only: We NEED to rehearse from 3-5 pm tomorrow. If you HAVE to leave early, arrive late, we'll get by. But please make every effort - we are app 6-10 hours of rehearsal behind other years, and we go FULL cast, crew, and orchestra next Tuesday.
Also, if any know of the strings who are not in band - could you please call or e-mail them? It would really help if they are prepared as well.

Well, that's all we had. Boy, when we were joking in January about the "mild" winter, we were really asking for it! and we got it!

Stay safe (and warm) ,

M Lutz

Monday, February 12, 2007 7:24 AM

Good Monday Morning parents:

Well, at least we made it here today, don't know about next two days - the weather people are all gloom and doom.
BUT, tonight there is a music booster meeting at 7:30, and we hope to be back home before the snow starts. Nothing more to report, we're all preparing for the musical (Pit Tuesday and Thursday - 3-4 pm..this is the last week of these, for next week, on Tuesday, we go "full bore" with the cast), District contest (keep march 9th clear - for a trip to Bellfontaine for both bands), and remember that next week - Monday and Tuesday are PLANNED days off - Monday is Presidents' day, and Tuesday is teacher curriculum day.

One thing I did accomplish at convention - anyone who has a State finals DVD of our band with little or no sound - e-mail me back - they have agreed to replace them (don't know how long it will take).

Also, the assignment made about listening to our concert (Feb 4th) and critiquing one song - the website is having difficulties, so if your student cannot access the recordings there, then they can go to the music boosters' site - www.olentangymusic.org

Stay warm, and remember: no matter how much snow we get, it's still not upstate New York (11 FEET)!

M Lutz

Thursday, February 08, 2007 8:14 AM

Good Frigid Morning, parents:
Yes, I guess the Superintendent decided to "bite the bullet" and go ahead and have school today - It doesn't seem to be getting any warmer!!
So here we are.
Just a heads up in case anyone will be trying to contact me - I will be out of the building tomorrow (Friday - music convention).

The concert last Sunday went well. It is a tough program, and we will need all of those five weeks we have left!! But for this early in the season, I was very happy with the result. I hope you were as well.
I had planned on a listening assignment/writing for this week. Obviously, this will be postponed until next week. More on that later.

Upcoming dates:
February
9 - All the Olentangy music teachers at convention - Columbus
12 - Music Boosters - 7:30 pm in the HS bandroom
19 & 20 - no school
20 - pit rehearsal with cast - 3-7 pm, and with the cast every day from now on
26 - no school

That's all I have for now. remember, if you know of someone not receiving these e-mails, then get them to email me, and we're good to go.

Tuesday, January 30, 2007 10:40 AM

Attached is the information given out last night at the 8th grade meeting. (in (WORD), (PDF) and (HTML)) Most of it is the same as last year, but a couple things of note:

1. Band camp is from Sat to Wed. - this is the only year for this, next year (2008) we go back to Sun - Fri.

2. Only 3 contests - I felt four was too many, and Grove City was futile - conditions and real heavy hitters (semi's etc.)

3. State Fair has not been set yet, nor program pictures. Please be flexible on these items - I sometimes only have days notice (pics for sure)

4. For New Philadelphia - we will be taking commercial buses, and still eating either before or after (if earlier start) New Philadelphia. The dates for both Thomas Worthington and New Philly are not set yet, and won't be until April/May. As always, when I know, you'll know.

5. If you know of anyone new to OHS, or coming back to band, or trying band for the first time as 10th graders, etc (flags) - please have them e-mail me so I can add them to the list. All I need is their e-mail, student's name, class and instrument and we're good to go.

See you on SUNDAY!

Monday, January 29, 2007 7:26 AM

Good Morning Parents,
Well, no snow day today. You ever notice how it seems it's the same schools on delay or closed? Just an observation.
This is a busy week! And it all starts tonight:
TODAY - 7 pm - 8th grade meeting in the theater, with students moving to band room - still need cookies, etc.
Jan 30 - Tuesday - registration starts for current HS classes
February 1 & 2 - concert rehearsal on stage (during school - regular band periods)
Feb 4 - Concert Day
1:30 - wind ensemble pic
1:40 - Concert band pic, then doors open, concert band warms up and tunes on stage
2:00 - Concert band performs their 3 contest songs
2:20 - Wind Ensemble performs their contest music
2:45 - both combine for a final winter song
2:50 - tear down stage and return equipment to band room
3:00 - On the road home to watch 3+hours of Super Bowl Hype

Next week is relatively quiet compared to this week! Pit is going well, we add singers this week. Friday flags are continuing to meet (it's not too late), and percussion are continuing to get together every Tues and Thursday from 6-8 pm....And yes, we are in the process of selecting music for next year's show - it seems to come earlier and earlier - like December holiday sales in September! We have the dates for band camp, as well as the summer - your student will be bringing this home this week, but here are the BC dates :
July 28 - Aug 1 - yes, it's Saturday through Wednesday - we had to go with these dates, or lose this BC, and that was not an option!
July 28 - arrive BY 7:30 am - register and move in
- 8:30 am - on field for first practice
Aug 1 - 7 pm - show for parents
- app 8 pm - pack and leave with parents

It's a little more intense on Saturday, but much less on Wednesday esp for those parents who work and have NEVER been able to attend these final performances. Now they can.

See you tonight, or Sunday.

I guarantee you will be out by 3 pm so you can watch 4 more hours of "hype" before the super commercials (bowl).

A heads up for the Jazz ensemble parents - our Jazz ensemble will be performing at Westerville North on March 3 (late morning) and April 12 at Tiffin University - performances and clinics all day, with a professional concert that night. As we get more info on both, you will get it also!

Good Tuesday Morning Parents:

Well, the Bucks were beat last night ( like I needed to tell you that). They were beaten by a better prepared team, and they ( Florida) executed perfectly. It was 2002 in reverse. They're still my Buckeyes, and I will sting for a while, but wow...what a ride! what is it - 280 some days until kickoff of the Youngstown State/OSU game?

A couple reminders of upcoming dates:

TODAY - after school - auditions for Pit Orchestra - some instruments
TODAY - Music Boosters - 7:30 pm in the band room
10, 11, 12 - exams ( band on Thursday - 9:15 am)
17 and 18 - after school - pit orchestra 3-4 pm

26 - during band - solo and ensemble performances
27 - Solo and Ensemble Contest - Granville HS - OHS has 88 events (66 from vocal, 22 from instrumental)
29 - 8th grade meeting - theater - 7 pm involving both 8th grade bands and some HS band students - more later

February 4 - Winter Concert - OHS Concert Band and Wind Ensemble - 2 pm

Other than that, it's been kind of quiet. That sure is nice!! I hope your January goes well!!

Parents:

The music booster meeting for next week - the 8th (ring a bell?) has been moved to the 9th. Many people, including myself, would not be able to attend - the OSU mauling of Florida. Time will still be 7 :30 pm on Tuesday, the 9th.

It has come to my attention that the id number I gave out is for only one profile. Once I used it, it was no longer valid. Therefore, Mr Moore, being his intrepid self, contacted Disney, and says this number will work - WDWD-7V4L-3W6Q-3E9C

Also, some of you stated that you did not receive the first e-mail from yesterday. Always remember - olentangyband.com has all the information you could ever need, and then some! Again, Thanks to that awesome defender of the technically challenged - Mr. Michael Moore!

See you next Tuesday, and GO BUCKS

Good 2007 morning parents:

Well, we're back, and survived. As of last night, I wasn't sure if I'd make it to today, but here we are!
Many places (Hard Rock and Tamarack center) commented on what a pleasure it was for them to serve our young people...these are the kind of comments we LIKE, and need to be passed on to you. Tamarak ( the service center on the WVA turnpike - we ate there 2 times) also shared that they had just served a teen group from Cleveland, and they were not behaved at all, which made the serving of our band that much better!
The game was fun, and both bands were powerful. Arkansas was the better band (according to OMEA) but Wisconsin was louder....plus the our band enjoyed experiencing the Wisconsin band's "5th quarter". Weather really cooperated(except the first day - cold) but 80's and no/little rain = great time.

A special thanks to the chaperones who really worked hard to keep the students in line, and healthy, as well as our truck crew - Tony Trunbiani and Phil Talbott - the truck stopped on the way back ( the the WVA mountains) but made it back.

Now, for the upcoming dates:
January 3 - absolute last day for S & E registration
January 8 - scheduled music booster meeting - will be moved due to OSU game - more later
January 10, 11, 12 - Exams
January 15 - No school - Martin Luther King Day
January 16 - No School - Teacher Work Day
January 17 - First Day of Second semester
January 27 - Solo and Ensemble competition - Granville HS
January 29 - 8th grade info meeting for next year - theater and band room - 7 pm

That's about all for now. I could go on and on about the trip - the two performances at Universal and Disney, the students participating in the "Cowboy roundup", Typhoon Lagoon, etc - you'll just have to ask your student. I'm still recuperating!!! LOL

I know, I just sent you a message today, but two more items:

1. If anyone took a GREAT picture of the band performing at either Universal or Disney, please attach it to a return e-mail, and we'll see about getting it published ( one of the local papers want to run an article, with pic - I'll get the release from the pictured students)

2. Speaking of Pictures - here is the web site and ID number to access the 62 pictures that Disney took of our Parade. You'll have to sign on, and then peruse the pics, (and yes, they cost $$).

Send an email to the webmaster at (MCM EMail) and he will send a request to Disney to send you a link to the photos. Available until March 4. The Disney website requires that access is handed out this way.

December 15 - deadline for registering for Solo and Ensemble
December 18 - 10 am - at Liberty bus garage - truck washing "party"
December 20 - 11 am - OHS band room - load truck for Florida
December 26 - 11 am - students report with luggage to be checked in
- 12 - leave
December 29 - perform at Universal - app 5 pm
December 30 - perform at Disney - app 3:15 pm

Jan 2 - return to OHS app 1:30 pm

January 27 - Solo and Ensemble contest at Granville HS

February 4 - Concert - concert band and wind ensemble 2 pm ( pictures at 1:30, doors open at 1:45)

A side note to Florida Band - Everything you need for Typhoon Lagoon needs to be in your carry on - not in your luggage under the bus.

Have a nice Holidays,

HI parents,

If your student is NOT going to Florida, then go ahead and delete this.

Attached are three things -

1. The consent for medical treatment at Universal form

2. The release form for Universal

3. The new FINAL itinerary, number 3

The new itinerary has the Disney times in it, so it should be complete.

Hope I didn't scare you with this second email, but some students needed the forms so they can fill them out ( I don't know what happened to their packet, but maybe this way we won't have anyone filling them out on the 26th as we are leaving....right. But we can hope!

Music Boosters tonight! 7:30 pm! Bandroom! Be there!! - Or watch the OSU marching band on channel 34 tonight - ALL NEW documentary at 8 pm (and you may recognize a couple OHS people)

Good Morning Parents:

Friday, December 08, 2006 8:38 AM

Sorry to bother you, parents, but after the chaperone meeting last night, I remembered (yes, I do that now and then!)...that a couple of you are going to Florida early, and having your student meet us at the hotel.
If that is you, please e-mail me back. I know many of you already have, but I can't seem to find them.

Also, the release forms from Universal - they are due BY next Wednesday..to date, we have 40 turned in.(out of 86).

Have a nice, serene weekend!

Monday, December 04, 2006 7:22 AM

Good morning parents:
I will try to make general announcements, etc., at the beginning, and then Florida specific one at the bottom, so if your student is not going on the trip, then you can just ignore it from there.

General:
Schedule during school this week :
Monday, Tues, and Thurs - inside - concert band schedule
Wed, Fri - Florida band schedule - and they WILL be outside! - So plan on it.

This Friday night at the boy's BB game, the Jazz ensemble (and any jazz alumni that show up) will be playing during the warm ups between JV and Var, as well as at 1/2 time.
And, of course, they will then be going to Fuddruckers for dinner.

Also, this Saturday will be a rehearsal for the Schubert Magnificat, involving our strings and vocal students. Schyler D'Souza is also performing on Tympani. The vocal concert will begin at 3 pm this Sunday in the theater.

Florida Specific:
Yes, please have your young person plan on cold weather this week on Wednesday and Friday.
There is a list posted in the band room - if the student's name is on it = they are paid up. I know you received notices this weekend, so the amounts are obvious. Please take care of this as soon as possible - we leave in 3 weeks!

Yes, in case anyone forgot, there will be a luggage inspection before loading, done by chaperones and staff. anything not acceptable will be left here, or the student will be. You might remind you band member that all school rules apply - drugs and alcohol to appropriate attire.

Don't forget to get those authorization and release forms in as well as the medical consent ones.

Hope all is well and calm at your house,

M Lutz

Wednesday, November 29, 2006 11:23 AM

Good morning parents:
Wow! we set up 120+ chairs for last night's meeting and had standing room only! The turnout was great! I hope for those who attended we answered your questions. And in 45 minutes (OK, 46)! If you didn't attend - I'll have the packets for your student today - so ask them when they get home...there are two forms that NEED to be filled out and handed in to me before break - they are Universal Studios' release forms and health forms.

If it doesn't rain, we plan on going out today. Net week is looking like a typical December in Ohio - gray and cold! Please see to it that your Florida bound band member is appropriately attired (gloves and hat, etc.).
Now to the questions that I couldn't answer - yes, there were actually two that I had no answer for!

1. Where to park - I have been told that seniors park in the senior lot, juniors in the junior lot, and adults (chaperones and staff) park in the teacher's lot right across from the band room. I will look into getting the Delaware sheriff's dept to make a couple extra rounds especially on new year's.

2. This absence is looked upon as a field trip - so no absence forms or excused, etc., will be necessary. I will send out a list to the teachers this week. That will take care of that. However, please know that "THE STUDENTS ARE RESPONSIBLE FOR ANY MISSED WORK"...in other words, it's not the teacher's responsibility to make sure the work is done - the student must ask the teacher for anything they may have missed. Approval by the school board is not a "get out of jail free" card - students still must do the work, or hand in any projects/reports, etc.

I think that about covers it. Next week, the chaperones are getting together, and then the students will find out who their own official chaperone is - and I'll e-mail you as well.

Good Morning Parents:
I hope Thanksgiving went well, and you didn't over-eat! Many of you knew I was in South Carolina this past week, but I know that this will break your heart...Tuesday, Wednesday - rain, and Tues, Wed, and even Thursday - it was warmer in Ohio than in SC! See, I knew that would bring a tear (LOL!).

But the holiday is over, and now time to prepare for the winter break, and the Florida trip.

Tuesday - November 28 - Bandroom - informational meeting for Florida - 7-8 pm - parents and students

Tuesday and Wednesday of this week - Florida band schedule, outside as long as the weather holds out!!!

This Saturday - December 2, - at Mount Vernon HS - these Olentangy band members will be participating in District Honors Band: Their concert will be at 3:30 pm
- Flute - Audrey Bonfig
- Clarinet - Jessica Amrine and Erin Wilson
- Trumpet - Brian Rizzo, Greg Taylor, and Jay Irwin
- French Horn - Kristin and Karen Watts

No more playoffs, no more Football (except for bowl games and championships - looks like USC will be the Bucks' next victim!), and we have a quiet time - enjoy! in January, we start getting ready for next year!

Good Thursday Morning!

Just a couple of items, and then I'll let you be until the end of November:

1. The Itinerary has changed again...Blizzard beach is closed for cleaning that week ( OHS luck!) so we're going to Typhoon Lagoon instead. The Final Itinerary#2 is attached (yes, there will probably be more numbers as we finalize our performance times at the parks).

2. If you can help out on Friday, please give Mrs Karl or Mrs King a holler - e-mails on previous e-mail (last week)
A. FYI - our field is in such a shape - game last week, weather this season, etc = neither band will be allowed to take the field for either pregame or 1/2 time. They have been told as of today, but in case anyone should bring it up - it is unsafe.

3. If you haven't recently (in the last 12 hours) you will want to check out our New and Improved Web Site - Especially if you are a buckeye. If a wolverine, we will pray that your intelligence will return to you!

4. Have a safe and restful Thanksgiving!!!

Good Monday Morning Parents!

This is a relatively quiet week ( I Know, that's what I said last week!), with even less going on. Here goes:

Tonight - 7:30 pm - Music Boosters - The New Superintendent (Dr. Davis) will be in attendance)

Friday - Yes, we're hosting another playoff game (that's the good news)...but it's not a D 1 game - West Jeff (yes, same as last Sat) and Amanda Clearcreek (Fairfield County -
they close down the town for FB games) = large attendance plus a need for workers. I was there last week, and what a great sight - to see all of you who were there
working and having fun. We need 40 more this week. see below:

Directors and OMBA board members,

The last concession stand of the season (or the next one on the playoff schedule) is Friday Night November 17. It is Division 5 West Jefferson vs. Amanda Clearcreek. We did not get the Division 1 game. Regardless we will need 40 people who want to work and help bring in more money to OMBA.

Paula Karl and I will be treating this as a regular varsity football game for time. Concessions will open at 6 p.m. game begins at 7:30. West Jefferson brought people this past Saturday and I would guess that Amanda Clearcreek will bring a lot of people. Especially since this is the regional finals. Please have anyone who would like to work contact me at dfdwking@insight.rr.com or by phone at 740 548-7715. I will take the first 40 people (preferable adults) who contact me.

Thanks,

Debbie King

With next week being a holiday week (and I'll be out of town), there will not be any update - I know - tear. The week after=

November 28 - 7 pm in the band room - Florida meeting for parents and students going on the trip.

That's all...so enjoy m*ch*g*n week! GO BUCKS!

M Lutz

Thursday, November 09, 2006 9:37 AM

Good morning parents:

This week - Saturday playoff - 8 pm West Jeff band - 50 members; Johnstown band - 140 members (1/2 the school)! I do believe both groups will bring the whole town = packed stadium = mucho $$$ if we have enough to work. contact Paula Karl rkarl@insight.rr.com
or Debbie King dfdwking@insight.rr.com

Since Athletic boosters will be charging for parking on Saturday I need to know who will be coming to work so I can give Jay the list of people who will not have to pay to park. If you plan on working let me know, if you have a friend who wants to work let me know. We have 40 slots and I don't need more than 40 people but I do need 40 people. (I have 12). Have them contact me by phone 740 548-7715 or email dfdwking@insight.rr.com ASAP.

Monday - Music Boosters at 7:30 pm in the band room ( Dr Davis will attend)

Next Friday or Saturday morning (due to OSU-M*CH*G*N game) - another playoff - possibly between div 1 schools. As soon as I find out the particulars, you'll know.

Tuesday, November 28th - parent/student trip meeting for Florida - 7 pm in the band room or theater. This will be a chance to get out final information, schedule, rules, what to pack, etc. This meeting will not last over an hour. See you there!

Enjoy this Friday night, with no where to go!!

Monday, November 06, 2006 8:10 AM

Good Morning Parents!

Feel like we never left the HS? I know what you mean! What a busy weekend...especially those involved in the play or keynotes! Well, for the band, things will definitely start settling down.

This week's after school schedule - NOTHING!!!
We do start concert bands today, with Florida rehearsals starting tomorrow - M, W, F - concert bands; T, R - Florida band (during school)
Friday if you're available, we plan on taking down the scaffolding and putting it away for the year...at app 3 pm
The musical, "Little Shop of Horrors" will be presented this week - Wednesday - in school, Thurs, Fri, and Sat nights - it is a comedy with 50's style music...so if that intrigues you - come over to OHS one of those nights and buy a ticket! Better yet, call the ticket office - 657-4191

Next Monday - 7:30 pm Music Boosters...and I believe the new Superintendent will be in attendance.

That's pretty much the whole schedule for the next two weeks! Nice, Huh? Now about Saturday:

During warm-up - we had app 6 instruments stop functioning. Instead of foscusing ion tuning and warming, we were fixing stuff. I'm sure that didn't help our ratings. And why did we need to fix? Probably due to the extreme conditions of the previous night, as well as being on the truck all night. All our valves and slides FROZE during third quarter of the playoff game. Anyway, we got those instruments functioning.

I thought, in all honesty, that we were between a I and a II after the first song. But we got stronger as the show progressed, and finished real strong! And then when I heard that all the band ahead of us got II's I knew we had 3 ones and 4 twos = 11 (a 10 is a one). And I was right. One of the twos - the judge gave us a II+...so we were REAL close. The whole block (6 bands) got II's. We knew going in that this was a tough panel, but we almost did it in spite of that.
Remember:
1. We haven't been to States in 4 years - so no one in the band had ever gone before
2. This year's seniors got us here, now next year's need to lead us back and build on this year.
3. both ratings - I & II = medal...I will be getting with our treasurer for a check to order them. I will also be handing them out in band, I don't want them to have to wait until MAY!
4. Wild season - both FB and Band! Shut out at two contests, challenged the band to improve, and they did and took 2nd place, then two weeks later went to New Philadelphia and destroyed any previous ratings with a new High score ever for OHS and straight ones!
No, we don't have anything to be sorry for. Our program is on the correct track, we just need to go a little harder, push a little more, and keep at it!
MANY, MANY thanks to all who helped this year - driving the truck, loading and unloading, sideline, meals, chaperoning, uniform cleaning, and many other things I am sure I am forgetting, but couldn't do without! You all helped to make this a season we will talk about for years to come!

OK, I'm making myself stop now - or else I'll start tearing up!!

One Florida note - we are getting a few students coming in and want to go. As of my latest calculations (and it's not perfect) we have app 8 seats left, with 2 gone as of today. If your student is interested, please fill out the form and fax it with your credit card number to the tour company. I cannot accept anything here - it's being done by the company at this last date - the biggest issue for the tour company is rooms and how many we are using.
Have a nice couple weeks of peace and quiet!

Thought I forgot, didn't you?

Well for the fifth straight day, here is the update:

Nothing new - rehearsal tonight, meal, game, then sleep, tomorrow - state finals - here by 7:30am for band (6:30 for flags).

If you are interested in the Florida trip - you have until this Tuesday by the end of the day - I will be sending in the rooming list, and that is final. You can download the form off the website, fill it out, put your credit card number on it (that will guarantee your spot) and fax it ASAP.

Stay Warm!!!!!

Yes, here it is Thursday, and here's your daily dose of e-mail from the band department!

Not much, but a BIG thank you to all who helped get your student, as well as the students who performed at Max & Erma's.
Afterword, we really inundated them with business. I hope you bought gift cards - I did - 20% went back to the band, and you get a $20 card for yourself/whatever. What a deal!
Also, whoever paid for Mr. Bell's and my dinner - thank you! That came as a complete surprise ( or else we would have had steak and those chocolate chip cookies LOL). That was above and beyond! Thanks again.

Today we have a rehearsal from 3-5 pm and percussion is from 5:30 - 7:30 pm. Our last after school for percussion, band, and flag corps!!

There have been several people expressing an interest in going to Florida, now. I believe the tour company WILL take people, but not for long. We do have a couple extra tickets to the bowl game (and I can get more - my source is real good), so come one come all. But don't delay = there will be a cutoff very soon (in the next week) so everything must be handled ASAP. Also, there has been interest in scholarships - due to this not being required (like band camp), and since we are relying on the music boosters for the bulk of our operating expenses, we cannot scholarship anyone....and this has been the policy all along.

One last, sad note. It is with a very heavy heart that I tell you of the passing of a former trumpet player from our band. Michael Hinerman graduated from OHS in 1998, and played in the band/marching band for all four years. He was a great kid, and really enjoyed band. He died in a single car accident on I 670 early Sunday morning. Calling hours are from 5-8 pm tonight at Schoedingers' on Johnstown road in Gahanna. Please, prayers for his family.

Hi parents. I've stopped calling this weekly updates, maybe daily? Here goes:

1. Rehearsal Thursday is a go - 3 to 5 pm, with percussion 5:30 to 7:30 pm...this WILL be the last Tues/Thurs after school practice of the year!!!

2. On Friday, the meal will be at 3:45 pm - the team will be in the Cafeteria from 3-3:35...so Mom's you can set up the pizza for us, but don't allow the team to eat our dinner!

3. Below is an opportunity to help make some extra money:

Directors,
We have a found concession event this Sunday Nov. 5 at SMS 12:30 p.m. to 7 p.m. We need 2 shifts of workers. 12:30 to 4 p.m. and 3:30 to 7p.m. We need 6 to 8 people. A mix of adults and students is acceptable. Please check with students who would like to watch OYAA football tournament games. Please have them contact me directly so I know who is coming and we have enough people and not too many.

Thanks,
Debbie King

That's about all for now....see you at Max & Erma's!!

Parents:
This note is to inform you that the practice for tonight has been postponed until Thursday. Even though it looked like we could get a practice in after the rain (time will tell), the band voted overwhelmingly to go on Thursday, when we can be sure of the weather (LOL!!!) Like in Ohio we can be sure of anything the weather might do!

My thinking is they wanted to get home so they could go trick or treating tonight, and them being so OLD. Some never grow up. Is that a bad thing? (rhetorical question)

Percussion is 3:30 to 5:30 tonight.

I hope this is the last update until next Monday....but don't hold your breath!

Good Afternoon Parents:

Yep, here's the second update ( I knew you were waiting for it).

Concert - Thank you for all the kind words about the concert. We had fun! I hope you all did as well! We did get outside Wednesday and Thursday. But not today (duh!).

I have been in contact with Kilbourne as well as weather channel, and it looks pretty dismal for tonight. As of right now, we will be marching in jeans, raincoats and hats. We may not march at all - the weather people say this is only the beginning - more and intensified later. All decisions will be based on supporting the team, as well as health an safety. Safety reasons were behind NOT doing a march through last week after the game - the field just would not be safe.

Next week's schedule is an extension of marching band - regular rehearsals during the day, and after school for the WHOLE band on Tuesday (3-5) and Friday (3-5:30, and dinner after). There is a 90% chance we will be hosting our 1st playoff game. It's 100% if (when) we win tonight. The rest of the playoffs HAVE to be at a neutral site - app 1/2 way between the two competing schools. Just FYI

The following week (November 6) we will have inside band(concert & wind ensemble) M, T, & Thurs. Wed and Friday will be marching band. Flag corps members not in inside bands will go to a study hall to be named later. This stays for playoffs.

Once playoffs are over, inside band will remain the same, but Wednesday & Friday will be Florida band, with non Florida eating a different period, and Study hall in the band room. Again, I will go into more detail later, when the time comes. Just a "heads up". for the future.

Speaking of Florida - rooming lists will be posted next week - we will make our official roster from this....I have had 4 students in the last week inquire as to Florida - it's not too late, but the deadline is FAST approaching, so if you are in that boat, please hurry and get your paperwork in!

well, I must move on and try to get an inside site for practice...STAY DRY!!

Fair warning parents - this is going to be a long e-mail!!!

Where to begin? Friday:

Injuries, issues, and forgot music boxes, etc - field in real bad shape (both practice and stadium), performed senior show, no run through - field wasn't safe! BUT WE WON!
Played through show on track - not even close to the real thing.

Saturday:
March through went well, weather was spectacular, Meal was awesome!, students were great - even though the trip took almost 3 hours, New Philly was a little hard to understand at first (truck 1/2 mile away from buses), leg/knee/ankle/teeth issues, warm up demand for $25.00 (good thing Mr Bell had a 20 and I had 5 singles), good warm up, great performance, many trophies (9), straight ones, state set for 10:30 am on November 4th! Whew!!!

I hope you know how proud we (the staff) are of your young person - I asked them to put it all on the field, and they did! After we were in the endzone - they were huffing and puffing, and I told them then that they had nothing to apologize to or for - they did they best they could, and FINALLY the judges recognized their effort.

OK, now we've had a day to settle down, here's the schedule:

Today - inside rehearsal both Monday and Tuesday - getting ready for our concert; Flag practice tonight - 3:30 to 5:30 pm
Tuesday - Concert - all student here BY 6:30 pm dressed and ready to warm up - march in to gym at 7 pm - full uniform
Wednesday - during school - OUT - we start our "march" to STATE! After school - chairing auditions
Thursday - unless I hear different - percussion after school
Friday - Normal schedule - rehearsal 3-5:30 pm, dinner and leave for Worthington Kilbourne - our last regular season victim
Saturday and Sunday - NOTHING! REST!!!

Next week - continue regular marching band schedule with Tuesday and Friday rehearsal!!! Probably a home game (dare we hope, Liberty?)
Remember, at State, they kick the judging up a notch.

Also - at the concert tomorrow, please take a flyer for Max and Erma's fundraiser - all you have to do is eat, and the music boosters get 20%! What's easier than that?

We will try to start concert band on November6th or 7th. I will warn you now, with the playoffs, State competition, and Florida, we will probably NOT have a winter concert in December...we would only have approximately 12 rehearsals to get something ready...and I want to do more than "throw something together". Instead, we will have a concert sometime in early February. I think that will work better, and I KNOW it makes sense educationally.

I think that's about it....I warned you!

See you tomorrow night!

Sorry parents:

I mis -wrote about the schedules for the next two days - we are testing during the 7:30 to 9:30 am times - and will then run the school on a two hour delay schedule...not starting school two hours later than normal. I hope this didn't confuse anyone. I knew what I wanted to write, but just didn't get it out correctly!

Sorry again,

Good Monday Morning Parents:
Today is basically the last "sane" day this week. Tomorrow we start testing as well as on Wednesday. Both days will be 2 hour delays for both HS's.
Thursday we will be finishing up with the testing.

And during this, the band will be preparing for their last (?) contest, as well as learning the senior show, not to mention that the weather may not cooperate this week (rain). So here are the dates and times of what we know so far:

Today - Flag rehearsal from 3:30 to 5:30 pm - band room and field

Tuesday, October 17 - after school - 3-5 pm, percussion - 5:30 to 7:30pm

Wednesday, October 18 - ??

Thursday, October 19 - percussion 4-6 pm

Friday, October 20 - NO SCHOOL rehearsal 4-6 pm - NO DINNER, so eat before arriving. HOME game with Mount Vernon - Senior night ( senior forms were due today, but try to get the in tomorrow!) - during pregame and special 1/2 time

Saturday, October 21 - 12:30 pm - march thru WITH instruments,
1:00 pm - load
1:30 pm - leave - meal on way, arrive app 6 pm at New Philly, perform 7:45 pm, back here around midnight.

Tuesday, October 24 - Marching Band Concert - 7 pm in main Gym - Full Uniform

Wednesday, October 25 - from 3 to 5:30 pm - chairing - students should have already signed up for a time...they only have to be here for their 5 minute session. once completed, they are free to go....we hope to have the concert bands chaired by Thursday morning....doesn't mean we will, but we can hope!

Friday, October 27th - regular Friday schedule with meal at school - AWAY game with Worthington Kilbourne

\Whew! and we thought things were slowing down! LOL! This does NOT include playoffs (keep the next few fridays in November clear) nor STATE (depends on what happens on Saturday).

Here is the web address of New Philadelphia HS band ( a great site, I might add). npschools.org/nphs/band There you can access maps, directions, etc for contest - might as well go - can't watch the Bucks! (unless you are the small % who actually own ESPN U). And we will be a long way from home, in a new environment, and would love to hear someone trying to get the others to spell Braves as well line up.

Stay Healthy!

Good Monday Morning Parents:

Well, we had a busy Saturday! And what a game on Friday night! My throat is still paying for it! Keep Friday nights, November 3 (and 10 and 17 and ???) clear...for playoffs.

Saturday, we raised $8,800 unofficially. Even though we didn't reach our goal, it's still a great effort! Thank you to all who helped, and special kudos to Mrs. Fox and Mrs Roemer for all their work.

Saturday night was an evening of ups and downs. First we had a clarinet cleared to march, but then another tripped earlier in the day and was at emergent care during our performance. We had a great warm-up, a good performance ( I know we still have a GREAT ONE somewhere inside), but we were closed out of the AA caption trophys. We should have taken video of the band's faces when they announced "Olentangy" for 2nd place. I (and many others, I'll wager) were waiting for the second word to follow "Olentangy" - Liberty. WOW! It was close - we beat them overall by .6 of a point out of 300. And the band did improve - 230.4 = we ARE going to New Philadelphia on the 21st. This will be our warm up for STATE (as well as the place that we qualify). There will also be a meal stop. Stop the presses! we have a time for New Philadelphia:

October 21st
Leave - app 1 pm (so we have time for a meal on the way)
perform - 7:45 pm (we are the last band to compete)
Awards - 8:30
return app 12 midnight

This week :
Monday - parent teacher conferences - 4-7:30 pm
Flag rehearsal - in band room and outside
Music Boosters - 7:30 pm in band room
I think we need something else to add LOL

Tuesday - rehearsal - 3-5 pm - band field
Percussion - 5:30 - 7:30

Wednesday - NOTHING AFTER SCHOOL

Thursday - Percussion - 4:30 - 6:30

Friday - rehearsal - 3-5 pm, dinner at 5, leave as close to 5:45 as possible - for Pickerington Central - "For All the Marbles!"
return app 11 pm

Saturday -NOTHING!!! Enjoy OSU thumping MSU - kickoff at 3:30 pm

Reminder to washing committee:
There are still a number of uniforms left here on Saturday night. Please come and get them- some of these weren't washed last week due to football Friday night. And after this past weekend - they need cleaning!

See you at the game on Friday!

Monday, October 02, 2006 7:44 AM

Good Monday Morning parents:
Well, we're are already over 1/2 way through the season. This week our team will have a real test - Westerville South at their house. The next day is Pride day. It is so important for everyone to be there who CAN make it - this is the 3 hour fundraiser where we have no costs, and keep 100% of the funds raised. The times are - 8:30 to 12 noon.

At 5:30 that same day (this Sat), we have a march through of our show for performance at Thomas Worthington at 8:45 pm. The contest starts at 5:30 pm, with the last band performing at 9:45 (Bowling Green U). Awards to follow, then we come home. We are planning to stay in the endzone to watch the 3 bands after us. If Thomas has a problem with this, and you need your student, please meet us at the buses.

Well, we had a great week of rehearsals, but a less than satisfactory performance. We know what we need to do to do better at competition, and believe me, we are doing all we can to make this happen - students and staff. FYI - Last week the students were notified that if the scores did not come up (from Grove City), then we were not going to waste their time
(app 3 hours by bus, one way - a total of around 9-10 hours that day) on Saturday, October 21. In other words we would not compete that week. Understand, this is not referring to I's and II's, but the numerical score. We scored a 235 at Highland, and got worse to the tune of 223.08 at Grove City. app 240 = I , so we figure that that part of the score will take care of itself. Our hopes are that this will motivate the band to really buckle sown and focus. They have it in them, they just need to get it on the field. This last part is our goal this week.

All the students who attended football Friday night need to CLEAN their own uniform, and get it back in by Friday. We will be wearing these uniforms 3 times before the next cleaning. There was some miscommunication on this, hope this clears it up.

One other aside pertaining to uniforms - washing committee parents - the students really appreciate the candy and snacks, but it has become an issue on the bus. The students are not allowed to eat in the band room, so they take it on the bus and eat it. We have had a transportation issue already, so if you could please refrain from this from now on, it will be appreciated by the staff and the drivers.

CONCERT ALERT!!! - our annual Marching Band Concert is scheduled for October 26 at 7 pm in the main Gym. Admission is free. This is where we review the season, honor our first years, as well as our seniors. It will last no more than an hour, and a nice relaxed atmosphere. Hope to see you there!!

Back to this week:
Monday - 3:15 - 6(?) - Flags
6:30 - 7:30 - Saxes
Tuesday - 3-5 pm - Band
5:30 - 7(?) - percussion and high WW's
Wed - no one
Thurs - 4:30 - 6:30 - percussion
3:30 - 4:30 - high WW's

Friday - game - leave time app 6:15 pm - return app 11 pm

Saturday -
Pride Day - 8:30 am to 12 noon (or when you're done - whichever comes first)
Bucks Kick off - 3:30 pm
contest times:
5:30 - march thru - in pants, shoes, socks, hats, not coats or gloves
6:15 - leave
8:15 - warm up
8:45 - perform
10 - awards
11 - return and unload

BUSY DAY!!! Mom and Dad - help us by making sure there is some down time from the game until the end of the contest - sleep on Friday to maybe a nap on Saturday? Anything will help greatly. If you think this is a hard day - try doing 2 (or more) contests in one day. We have done that before, but you might notice we don't try it anymore.

Also I need an e-mail from a parent if your child:
has sports, ACT warm up, or whatever, and cannot make Pride Day. Attendance will be taken and this is treated as a performance.

See you Friday/Saturday!!!

Good Monday Morning!

Past, Present and then Future:

Past - Friday - Game at Marysville - dry for three quarters, unfortunately, a game lasts for four quarters. Got soaked, but endurable. Again, what can I say? The parents helping out on these away games are irreplaceable! and greatly appreciated. We could use a couple more females to help out with "potty breaks".

Saturday - overall II - the conditions were pretty bad, but they were the same for all bands. Our marching got worse, our music scores, better. Overall, we went down, as we knew was a possibility...as each week goes on the judging gets more demanding. So we have our work cut out for us for Oct 7. Thanks to all you intrepid fans who journeyed to the south end, with the weathermen predicting gloom and doom (which didn't happen, by the way).

Present - Flag sectional tonight. Tuesday rehearsal 3-5 (possibly with court), and the rest of the week as already scheduled. As of this writing, I am not aware of any sectionals or extra after school rehearsals. If in doubt - get with your advisor ( I would probably that percussion will have something this week). Game this week is against Dublin Jerome - good ban, so so FB team - equals win. Congratulations to both Barrie Farber - Junior attendant (tuba section leader) and to Bernardo Lopez - senior King candidate (tenor sax section leader). They will both be involved this Friday, so will not be with us. In his parents words "Vamos Bernardo!"

Also this Friday - watch channel 4 news - you might see some people you recognize - this week most of our seniors an a few juniors will travel on their own at 10 o'clock (hopefully no triple overtime!) and participate in "football Friday night" please tape this or whatever - i usually don't get home in time to watch the 11 o'clock news. More info as I get it for the participants.

Next week - October (already?!) 7 - busy day for all:
8:30 - noon - Pride Day - full uniform
that late afternoon/early evening - Thomas Worthington contest - time will be sent as soon as I get them... we will schedule a 1/2 hour "march through" before leaving.

I pray that all is well with you and yours, and you survived this wet weekend!

Parents,
I have been mailed about directions for this weekend. Here they are:

Friday night - Marysville HS (our team's next victim) - 800 Amrine Mill rd.

Take Home road until it dead ends - across Scioto river. Turn right, then left. Proceed until a stop sign - route 42 - turn left
Continue until Rte 33 - turn right (northwest) towards Marysville.
At the 4/31 exit, exit following route 31 (stay on the left). Continue on 31 - the school will be on your right

Saturday night - Grove city HS - 4665 Hoover Road

315 south, it turns into 71 in downtown Columbus.
Exit at the #100 exit (just after I 270), and turn right on Stringtown road.
Follow Stringtown (app 1 mile) to Hoover - turn left.
GC HS is on the right app 3/4 mile on Hoover

Both of these are on the HS web site - just click on athletics, then on event directions - they have a plethora of schools listed...but a small problem - for Marysville, they have you going down South Sectionline Road - but it's closed at route 42, and you may get mad or worse - lost. That's why the above directions take you to Harriott road to join 42.

See you somewhere!

Good Afternoon parents:
Here is the latest -
From last Saturday:
We took 4th place overall - flags took 3rd. We lost to groveport (who qualified ) by 4.8 points, out of 300. All in all, a real strong showing - the important thing to remember is - we got stronger as the show progressed...usually, we weaken, so watch out this Saturday!
Our Scores:
Music (total possible 80 pts - 72 and up = I)
  • 67 (II)
  • 70.5 (II)

    Percussion
  • 7.5 (II)(out of 10, 8.0 = I)
  • M & M - General Effect - 40 (I) M & M - Execution - 40.5 (I)

    General Effect (out of 100 - 80 = I)
  • 77.5 (II)
  • 79 (II)

We are so close! We will continue with what we're doing, polishing and "tweaking" . As you can see, our lowest scores are in the music part, and we usually score best here. This WILL be fixed by this Saturday. I was (and am) proud of what these young people have accomplished, and sooner or later, they'll be recognized for it.

This week's schedule (not including flags or percussion)
Tuesday - regular after school practice - 3-5 pm
Wed, Thurs - nothing after school
Friday - practice 3-4:45; dinner and load - 4:50 to 5:30 - leave for Marysville at 5:30pm; return app 11 pm
Saturday - here by 5:15 pm
    Leave - 5:30 pm
Perform at Grove City - 8:30 pm
Return right after performance...back to OHS app 10 pm

Please remember - we need help for drivers for October 7th Pride Day. Also, a big shout out and thank you for the plethora of cookies for last week's game! they were greatly appreciated by BOTH bands, as well as the 8th graders.
See you either Friday, as the Braves continue to roll, or Saturday night,

    M Lutz

    Good Thursday Morning Parents:
I am sorry, but I STILL don't have any information about our contest (in 48 hours!). I don't even know our judges or start times. I have e-mailed the host again yesterday, to no avail. Our times are good, but many of you expressed interest in attending the whole thing, and I can't help you. If you want, you could call the school at 1-419-768-3101
The band director's name is Heather Bishop. Normally, I would rather cut off my arm than have parents call another school, but you need the info, and I don't have it. If it comes today or tomorrow, I'll be in touch.

    A few other things:

    1. Uniform committee - PLEASE DON"T TAKE THE UNIFORMS HOME FRIDAY NIGHT (individuals who are meeting us at contest - yes. After we return on Saturday, please take them home then.

    2. We are trying to provide something more than just pop for Big Walnut's band at 3rd quarter - they always have cookies/snacks for us, so we want to return the kindness. I am asking for the WHOLE band to bring in a dozen cookies/brownies/fruit snacks, whatever, by game time Friday. BW's band is about the same size as us, and we will be 60 bigger - 8thgrade.

I ALSO NEED A COUPLE PARENTS THAT CAN BE HERE EARLY, AND HELP CORDINATE THIS (including the bringing over of 300 bottles of pop...concession stand - this will also help alleviate the crowds during this time.

    3. A note about Pride Day:
    Greetings Olentangy Music Parents!

Our annual Pride Day fund drive will be held on Saturday October 7, 2006 from 8:30 am-12 pm. High school band, choir, and strings students will collect donations from area residents. This is our big fall fundraiser for the music department. Last year, our students were able to collect over $9,500; this year, we hope to raise at least $10,000.

Students will wear their uniforms and report to the high school band room at 8:00 am on Saturday morning. Adult drivers are needed to take 4 to 5 students through a designated neighborhood area and collect donations from area residents. Maps will be provided to drivers, along with collection envelopes and instructions for the event. We ask that students always collect from residents in pairs, for safety reasons. Drivers should follow along while students collect, not getting too far behind or too far ahead. Sign-up sheets for student groups will be posted in the high school music rooms.

If your company matches funds let us know and we can get you a letter to send in.

We need as many drivers as possible. If you would like to email me about your plans to drive, or if you have additional questions about Pride day, please email me at ellenfox@insight.rr.com or call me at 740-657-1853 and I will put you on the list.

This is another great way to stay involved in the music programs at Olentangy High School. Please join us in the fun!

    Thank You,

    Ellen Fox

Don't forget - we have a rehearsal today -3 to 5 pm outside! Contest cleaning and polish.

    Monday, September 11, 2006 7:45 am

    Good Monday Morning,

Well, what a weekend! The Braves won, The Bucks embarrassed Texas, in their house, and all is well with the world, for a short while.
The Braves are 3-0 and looking to improve to 4-0 this week against Big 'Nut. This Friday is MS night, so if you try to talk to me after 3 pm, be ready for gibberish (like that's something new, right?). We are expecting app 60 8th graders to perform the first 1/2 as well as at 1/2 time - Wild Thing, Let's get it started, and YMCA.

There will be a complete run of the contest show (first time, ever!) in full uniform immediately following the game. Get as high as you can to film! It will be done exactly as we plan to do it on Saturday - warm-up, salute, etc.

Times for sat were sent last week, but just in case-
    - here - loading at 4:15...please ALL plan to be here by this time!
    - Leave 4:45
    - Warm - up - 6 pm
    - Ready Line - 6:30
    - Perform 6:45
    - Awards - app 8 pm
    - back to school app 9 pm
Please try to be there! The students really get "pumped" when they hear your reaction to them taking the field...especially Bernardo!

Again, A big thank you to the parents helping out with the meals on Friday night, and the uniform crew. All the uniforms are gone, BUT REMEMBER - don't take them this Friday - we need them for Sat!

Last, but very important - The rehearsal planned for Tuesday, is postponed to Thursday. As many have probably seen - our music is pretty good...but we need to "clean" our shapes and marching, so it is imperative to get out, and the weather for Tuesday (and Wed) is not good. So I understand if a student can't get off work, whatever (frosh FB game, etc.), but they need to at least try - every person we have will help the whole group! I don't change the schedule lightly, knowing what many people have to do to adhere to it, so please believe me, this is necessary. I know we'll do well, but we can be GREAT!

See you (or hear you) on SATURDAY!

    M Lutz

    Thursday, September 07, 2006 1:18 PM

    We have times!!!!

    September 16, 2006

Highland Contest - Leave 4:45 pm
    Warm - up - 6:15 pm
    Perform - 6:45 pm

Should be back to OHS around 9 pm

For those of you who have been with us at Highland before...here is what I know -
3 B bands total (that includes Highland)
    1 A band
5 AA bands (that includes us) = A "Big Dogfight in a little backyard. So, If you are going to watch and support us( and we encourage that!), get there early - they have a small stadium.

    The other AA bands :
Delaware Hayes (we'll see them tomorrow)
    Groveport Madison
    OHS
    Dublin Jerome
    Marysville

We've got our work cut out for us - But we have confidence, especially this year...many of those bands won't know what hit them!!

OK, Anyway, here are the directions to Highland HS:(kind of like to our band camp, but turn right through Merengo)
    I 71 north to the 140 exit.
    Turn left on SR 61
Take 61 for 2 miles to intersection of 229
turn right on 229, going back over I 71
Stay on 229 for app 6 miles to the intersection of 229 and 314. HS is on the right, so you'll turn right, then left to park. The buses will be on the south side of the HS - at the MS

If these directions make you dizzy, then you can mapquest or whatever - Highland HS
    6505 State Route 229
    Sparta, Ohio 43350

ONE OTHER THING: We are still in need of help for washing the uniforms - we have barely enough - if we had a couple more - it would ease the load for all...please contact
    Mrs. Barrie at: EmilyBarrie@aol.com

Wow, it is really getting close to the hot part of the season...the braves are 2-0, and the band will take no prisoners on September 16th! Hope to see you tomorrow night. We are ALMOST ready for songs 2, 3, & 4 ...the band has really been working their tails off, and we hope to make you all proud Friday night.

    Good September morning!
The Braves won, the patriots won, OSU won big, and it's Texas/Delaware week! As the excitement builds this week, just a couple reminders:

    1. The uniform washing committee - for the first week, there were a couple glitches, but all uniforms got taken, an some are even returned already! well done!

    2. Yes, the trailer did decide it wanted to go different way home than he truck on Friday night...but thanks to our driver and his partner in crime, all is well - kudos to you as well.

    3. PLEASE check you son/daughter's uniform preparation - make sure they have their shoes, hatbox (with hat), and BLACK or BLUE socks! the socks were a problem last Friday, but I know it won't be this week.

    4. Those male students who are stuck in the 60's (AKA long hair) must find a way to keep it from "exploding" out from under the hat, and off the neck - do rag, skull cap, whatever.

    5. Schedule for this week:
Today - regular rehearsal 3-5 pm
Friday - rehearse from 3-5:30, dinner, warm-up, then over to the stadium for the game....should be done around 10 pm - Full uniform
As to the percussion and/or flags, please check with their respective advisors.

Remember, We can always use help in the concessions - check our website - olentangyband.com

Music boosters on September 11 at 7:30 in the band room
Contest - Highland HS in 10 days! Times etc., to follow (don't have them yet)

    Good afternoon parents:
Sorry, but I had to get this out asap:

    1. Your student needs both summer and full uniform parts ( shoes, hat box, etc) for tomorrow - we don't really know what the weather is going to throw at us - rain, sun, high of 67, whatever - we need to be prepared for anything.

    2. I have had a couple people tell me that they are interested in bowl game tickets (Capitol One - Orlando) but aren't planning to travel with us ( the chaperones are all pretty much taken up )...so if you are in that boat, PLEASE get back to me ASAP - we have already ordered the tickets, and to keep costs down for everyone, we ordered just a couple more than needed; But we can order more, but we have to move fast - like before next week. So if you'd like to go to the game, but nothing else, e-mail me back.

    A. If you are looking for a "land only" package - hang with us while in Florida, but not down and back - you need to get hold of Dean McDowell, our travel agent, at:
    "Dean McDowell"

    3. that's about it - pray for dry weather!

    see you Friday!

    Good morning parents:

Wow!!! Did last Friday go well...in spite of the heat and it being our first game? I only hope we can keep up that intensity, both in rehearsals and performances.
Shoe $$ is due this week - all but 5 are in (the late order), so as soon as I get the $30.00 - you get the shoes. We are FULL this week - gloves, shoes, plumes, etc., so be prepared. Our show shirt or last year's under the coat = IF we take them off, we still look somewhat uniform.

    Schedule for this week:
    Flags today after school - app 3:30 - 5:30
Tuesday, Aug 29 - after school rehearsal - 3-5 pm
    Wednesday, Aug 30 - "Open House" - 7-9 pm
Thursday, Aug 31 - Nothing after school
    Friday schedule
    3-5:30 pm - field rehearsal - mostly M & M
5:30 pm - 6 pm - dinner in commons - Wendy's - choice of one - hamburger, cheeseburger, or chicken sandwich
6 pm - dress and load for Thomas Worthington
    6:30 - leave for Thomas
10:30 - 11 pm arrive and unload from Thomas

The way the team looked last Friday against a very good Scioto team = keep November Fridays open, just in case!

Attached is the order form for the show shirts - many of you expressed an interest - so there you go - any questions - e-mail Mrs. Boyce: psboyce@verizon.net

    See you Friday!!

I'm sorry to bother you, but due to my lists being "eaten" last year, I know someone came forward in the spring, willing to be the "voice of the band" for 2006. I just don't remember who that was. Would you please e-mail me ASAP? Thanks.

    Since I've got your attention:
The band and Flags are responsible for helping at the concessions for soccer games, etc. Here are a couple coming up _they're posted in the band room - if you can help - please have your band member sign up:

    Girl's soccer -
August 29 - 5 pm to 8 ish - stadium (change from original schedule)
Sept 7 - Same - Shanahan MS Concessions

Handbook forms are due by next week - September 1. We have extras here, and will see if we can get it loaded on the website. remember, when in doubt - check the website

    OLENTANGYBAND.COM

See you tonight, and GO BRAVES!!!

    Good Morning Parents:
I told you this was going to be a crazy week. Here are some new things that have come up recently.

    1. Attached is the Pay to participate form (PDF). This gets a little confusing, so here goes:
    A. If signed up for band for the year = $20.00 check made payable to Olentangy Schools
    B. If signed up for MB Aux (non instrumentalist) = $20.00 (this is a change from previous years)

This is due by the fifth game of the season (Homecoming) There also is a limit per family - please read the attached.

    2. We need help! The uniform committee is forming, and Mrs. Barrie is the chair. If you can help, or just want more information, please e-mail her at: (Mrs. Barrie)

    3. Last - the cost of admission to FB games is going up this year - $6.00 per person. The AD has just told me he will block out a section of seats for band parents - reserved (with arms and seat backs) is only two dollars more. If interested - call 657-4111

That's it (for now) - see you Friday as we annihilate Dub Scioto!

    Monday, August 21, 2006 11:13 AM

    Good Monday Morning Parents:
Well, here we are, the last couple days of summer, then School! Things get crazy, fast, so here's our schedule:

Tuesday, Aug 22 - 5-7 pm rehearsal on our practice field - 1st game prep

Wednesday, Aug 23 - 1st day of school, rehearsal app 11 am to 1135 am, then lunch for entire band

    Thursday (same as above)

Friday, Aug 25 - Rehearsal after school - 3-5:30 pm, Dinner provided by Music Boosters in Cafeteria, change into uniforms, warm up, then game - kickoff is always at 7:30 pm, with pregame approx. 7:10. Most games are over approx. 10 - 10:30 pm.

    Tuesday, Aug 29 - rehearsal 3-5 pm

Friday, Sept 1 - same as previous Friiday, with these exceptions - FULL

UNIFORM and AWAY game at Thomas Worth.

    Now, a couple notes:

    1. When picking up your student, especially after performances, please do not park in the "bus drop off area" on the west side of the school = delay in our buses and equipment vehicles getting parked = delays in your son/daughter being released. This has always been an issue, and after the State Fair, I knew we needed to address this.

    2. Please pick up your student in a timely manner. I try to give an approximate time of return in my e-mails, we have the students call on their cells, and we still have students waiting sometimes for over 30 minutes after arrival. The directors must, and WILL stay with your child until you arrive. If you know of a problem, maybe if you informed us early, we can have your son/daughter ride home with someone else's parents.

    3. Let's say you have been a good band parent, and you're waiting for your band member before we arrive in the parking lot. The you see the band truck (new one this year - blue) pulling the trailer, park in fron of the band room. PLEASE feel free to come over an help the driver (usu. Tony Trubiani) unload. The quicker we can be unloaded, the sooner your child is finished.

    4. Times for contest - I won't know for sure until app 7 days before. When I know, I"ll send out an e-mail. Almost all our contests start at 4 or 5pm = depending on the number of other bands, we'll perform at app 8 pm. Some earlier, some later. As of this writing, we have confirmed with three of the contests - and one is Thomas Worthington (there were issues last year)...however, keep the last date free even though New Philly hasn't confirmed either e-mail nor snail mail. we'll just have to wait until school starts, so I can call.

    5. Last - The music boosters are planning on Oct 7 for Pride Day. For those of you new to this - we go out for 3 hours, in uniform, and go door to door for donations. Mom an Dad, we will make app $12,000 in this 3 hour time frame with no overhead. We would have to sell $40,000 worth of candy/cheese&sausage/butter braids/etc to come close to this. Please make every effort to have your band member participate, and we need drivers! More later.

Enjoy these last couple of days!

    Schedule:

Next Tuesday - rehearsal - 5-7 pm - last one before school starts (the next day!)

    Thursday, August 10, 2006 1:30 PM

Sorry, But I guarentee, this is the last one this week!

Pictures have been moved again - due to all the conflicts with Friday=less than 1/2 the band there (including missing seniors, an that is not acceptable), and knowing that NO date until school starts will please everyone....we will have pics taken on Tuesday, August 15th.

    Schedule:

Today - rehearsal from 5-7 pm, and shoe fittings for those who need the official marching shoes

    Friday - NOTHING

Monday, August 14 - 7:30 pm - Musi Boosters - come and then after the meeting you can beat me up - figuretively (sp?)

Tuesday, August 15 - 5 pm - group shot (be ready before! BR open at 4 pm)
App 5:30 pm - individual, senior, and small group pics
    done before 7 pm
If you do not want any ind pics (for buttons, etc), then you're done at 5:25 pm

    Thursday, August 17 - 5-7 pm, and a special guest conductor...more later

OK, I hope this is all. I rescheduled with the Photographers, so as far as I know, we are the only group on Tuesday.

    Hi parents,
I am SOOOO Sorry! I got the dates mixed up ( I keep telling the band I'm getting old!) -
THE DATE FOR THE PICTURES FOR THE FALL PROGRAM IS FRIDAY, NOT THURSDAY. The times will still be the same.

On Thursday, we will have practice from 5-7 pm, and the shoe fitting as planned.
Again, I am so sorry, I cannot tell you. I know this may mess up some schedules. It is entirely my fault on this one.
We hope to have order forms by tomorrow night's rehearsal.

    Also, please read below:

    Directors,

I would appreciate your forwarding this message to your e-mail lists. Thank you for your help!!

We have again been asked to provide volunteers for the Triathlon at Alum Creek State Park on Sunday, August 20, 2006. If you wish to sign up, please e-mail me at normaj@acornfarms.com. You need to be able to commit from 6 a.m. to 11 a.m. I will fill the available spots on a first come, first served basis.

    Thank you!

    Good Morning Parents:
I am doing this remotely (from Home), so It might be a little different.
Band camp was a HUGE success, in spite of the heat. Your young person was tough, we had to transport no one, and the worse thing we had were bug bites. We also learned three fourths of the show, as well as pregame. I am very happy with our progress, as is the staff, and I believe we are going to surprise some people this year. But we've got to keep this going - we need everyone who can, to make it to rehearsals these next three weeks. We are diminished by every absence.

    Schedule:

Tuesday, Aug 8 - rehearsal 5-7 pm, and prep for state fair
Wednesday, Aug 9 - leave app 2 pm, return app 10 pm - summer uniform
Thursday - Aug 10 - pics for program, individuals, and shoe fittings - 5-7pm - full w/o gloves and plumes

Tuesday and Thursday - the 15 and 17 -5-7 pm - post camps on field
Tuesday, Aug 22 - last post camp

Friday, Aug 25 - After school, dinner at school, home game - summer uniform

    Many questions:

The people who attended the DCI last night were fired up...I couldn't make it, but they were texting me, as well as sending pics, so i know some education happened! I also hope they'll bring some of that home.

Camp was great! Now, it's up to all of us to keep that intensity, energy, and focus up to that standard all season!

    Hi parents:
    Just a quick note:

I've been asked to pass this request on... anyone wishing to bring snacks - for evening treats - need to bring them with you on Sunday.

Rehearsals have been going great!!! The staff is looking forward to camp. The band has raised the bar, so our expectations have definitely risen. I hope the weather cooperates, and we can really show off to you on Friday of next week. The performance will begin around 10 am - but is dependent on our rehearsal before, and how well it goes! LOL

    See you Sunday, and/or Friday

    Good morning parents:
Well, we start in earnest today. Section leaders/squad 9 am to 1 pm, new people from 2-4 (from 4-5 they can bring snacks, etc before 5 pm), and 5-7 full rehearsal. AND the percussion having a mini camp today as well. Whew, talk about hitting the ground running.

The staff and I have been very happy with the progress we have made to date, especially on the field. Everyone who has been to even one rehearsal has helped the band. They will be happy they gave of their free time this summer.

The upcoming schedule for the official precamps:

    You got today's
    Tuesday - 5-7 pm
    Wednesday - 5-7 pm - Camp Chaperone meeting - theater - 7:15 pm (for app 1/2 hour)
    Thursday - 5-7 pm
Friday - 5-6:30 pm, then loading the truck.

Sunday, July 30 - between 1-3 pm - arrive at camp and check in.
Friday Aug. 4 - app 10am - parent performance, and check out (no buses)

    Tuesday, Aug 8 - post camp - 5-7 pm
Wednesday, Aug 9 - March at State Fair - leave app 2:30 pm, perform app 4 pm, return app 10 pm - summer uniforms
Thursday, Aug 10 (tentative) - Pics for program - full uniform in Stadium - 5-7 pm

    Monday, Aug 14 - Music Boosters - 7:30 pm

I don't want to go too much farther in the schedule - things have a tendency to change.

I have also attached the band camp letter (again) for those who either didn't get it the first time, or lost the e-mail. It is in pdf form.
Also - the summer uniform shorts alone are $30.00...the shirt costs another $17.00. It's been a long time since I purchased either. Mea Culpa!

    See you on Sunday!

Also, "they" are planning on resurfacing the service road and parking lots this week - so it's best if you enter by way of Shanahan, and park by in the senior lot

    Monday, July 03, 2006 12:16 PM

    Good morning parents:

I hope your summer is going well. On this, the third of July, I need to remind you:

Rehearsal tonight - 5-6 pm , rain or shine. We load after the rehearsal.

    Parade
South Old State will be closed as of 9 am. Please drop off you band member at the Oak Creek Shopping center. We will be meeting at the bank on the western most end (by old Powell rd). - but you cannot enter there - it too will be closed.

Parade steps off at 10 am, and we are # 41 in the parade (around the middle). We are looking for a couple parents to walk along with us (not have to march) and have water for the students. The first 6 at the parade site will get the gig.

The route is down old Powell, south on Old State, right(east) on Orange, and end at the Middle School.

Once the instrument is loaded, or you're there to get your student, their job is done. And then you can leave, or stay for the festival.

We will unload the truck at the Thursday "put the band room back" session.

    July
6 - 9 am - put the band room back - hopefully done by lunch - we carpool to Delaware Square shopping center - Pizza - all you can eat
6 - first "open band room" session - 5-7 pm - bring comfortable shoes...much M&M going on, and I don't mean the candy
10 - Music boosters meeting - 7:30 pm in the band room
    11 - second open band room - 5-7 pm
    13
18 all open band room - 5-7 pm
    20
    24 - section leader/squad leader session - 9 am to 12 noon
Special new person session with the section/squad leaders - 2-4:30 pm
    regular precamp - 5-7 pm
    25 - precamp - 5-7 pm for everyone
    26 - precamp - 5-7 pm for everyone
    27 - precamp - 5-7 pm for everyone
    28 - precamp - 5-7 pm for everyone
30 - band camp - arrive between 1-3 pm - letter to come out next week

SPECIAL NOTE - Due to the overwhelming numbers of parents who attend the Friday "show" - (and hopefully we can do it outside this year!) we will NOT have buses picking up the students from camp - last year we had app 15 students on 3 buses - Soooooo, fair warning...maybe you take a couple students up, and someone else brings them back. No students are allowed to drive there or back.

    Have a safe Fourth!!

    Monday, June 26, 2006 11:25 AM

    Hi all!!
Well, back for less than one day, and already things are messed up.

This Monday (today), the percussion sectional will be either on stage, or in the choir room - they are in the process of sand blasting the band room ceiling, and much dust and dirt will come form this, so the room will be sealed off until Friday. Now, this Friday at app 11 am, I'll need some help putting the band room back together. If we have the help, we can get this done by say 1 pm - then to the pizza place!! There will be a sign up at rehearsals this week.

Rehearsals this week will be in the theater, as well as outside (duh!). But the stage will be our base of operations this week.

I told you things were crazy! I know, when aren't they!? That's really all I have for now...but here's a couple reminders:

    June 28, 29 and July 3 - 5-6 pm - 4th of July parade rehearsals - theater

July 4 - parade - starts at the shopping center (KFC, Donato's, etc - on the west end =by the bank is where we'll meet at 9:30 am - summer uniform...Ms band shirts are OK for this one ONLY) - the parade ends at Orange MS, and yes, we are planning to march all the way to the end!

July 6 - 5-7 pm - in band room and on field - open band rooms start - make as many as you can - you'll be glad you did!
July 11, 13, 18, 20 - the rest of the open band rooms - Tuesday and thursdays

I've got to go. See you at the rehearsals!

    M Lutz
