Contest Drill

Good morning parents:

I hope your summer is going well. On this, the third of July, I need to remind you:

Rehearsal tonight - 5-6 pm , rain or shine. We load after the rehearsal.

Parade
South Old State will be closed as of 9 am. Please drop off you band member at the Oak Creek Shopping center. We will be meeting at the bank on the western most end (by old Powell rd). - but you cannot enter there - it too will be closed.

Parade steps off at 10 am, and we are # 41 in the parade (around the middle). We are looking for a couple parents to walk along with us (not have to march) and have water for the students. The first 6 at the parade site will get the gig.

The route is down old Powell, south on Old State, right(east) on Orange, and end at the Middle School.

Once the instrument is loaded, or you're there to get your student, their job is done. And then you can leave, or stay for the festival.

We will unload the truck at the Thursday "put the band room back" session.

July
6 - 9 am - put the band room back - hopefully done by lunch - we carpool to Delaware Square shopping center - Pizza - all you can eat
6 - first "open band room" session - 5-7 pm - bring comfortable shoes...much M&M going on, and I don't mean the candy
10 - Music boosters meeting - 7:30 pm in the band room
11 - second open band room - 5-7 pm
13
18 all open band room - 5-7 pm
20
24 - section leader/squad leader session - 9 am to 12 noon
Special new person session with the section/squad leaders - 2-4:30 pm
regular precamp - 5-7 pm
25 - precamp - 5-7 pm for everyone
26 - precamp - 5-7 pm for everyone
27 - precamp - 5-7 pm for everyone
28 - precamp - 5-7 pm for everyone
30 - band camp - arrive between 1-3 pm - letter to come out next week

SPECIAL NOTE - Due to the overwhelming numbers of parents who attend the Friday "show" - (and hopefully we can do it outside this year!) we will NOT have buses picking up the students from camp - last year we had app 15 students on 3 buses - Soooooo, fair warning...maybe you take a couple students up, and someone else brings them back. No students are allowed to drive there or back.

Have a safe Fourth!!

Hi all!!
Well, back for less than one day, and already things are messed up.

This Monday (today), the percussion sectional will be either on stage, or in the choir room - they are in the process of sand blasting the band room ceiling, and much dust and dirt will come form this, so the room will be sealed off until Friday. Now, this Friday at app 11 am, I'll need some help putting the band room back together. If we have the help, we can get this done by say 1 pm - then to the pizza place!! There will be a sign up at rehearsals this week.

Rehearsals this week will be in the theater, as well as outside (duh!). But the stage will be our base of operations this week.

I told you things were crazy! I know, when aren't they!? That's really all I have for now...but here's a couple reminders:

June 28, 29 and July 3 - 5-6 pm - 4th of July parade rehearsals - theater

July 4 - parade - starts at the shopping center (KFC, Donato's, etc - on the west end =by the bank is where we'll meet at 9:30 am - summer uniform...Ms band shirts are OK for this one ONLY) - the parade ends at Orange MS, and yes, we are planning to march all the way to the end!

July 6 - 5-7 pm - in band room and on field - open band rooms start - make as many as you can - you'll be glad you did!
July 11, 13, 18, 20 - the rest of the open band rooms - Tuesday and thursdays

I've got to go. See you at the rehearsals!

Monday, June 12, 2006 1:20 PM

Good afternoon parents:
After sending this out, my computer will be disconnected, and not re attached until June 28 - so if there is an emergency - e-mail Mr Brun - ian_brun@olentangy.k12.oh.us....I will be out of the country for app 9 days.

Today is the 2nd day of flag camp, and the band room clean up - (for painting). Busy Monday. Now add tonight's music boosters at 7:30 pm in the band room, and that pretty much completes the day. Flag camp will continue thru Wednesday, and then the band room is off limits until June 26 (percussion practice), and June 28 - 1st rehearsal for the 2006 season!!! (4th of July practice - 5-6 pm)

We will need people to help put our room(s) back together - more on that later, when we get a date/time we can move back.

PLEASE COME TO THE MUSIC BOOSTERS TONIGHT!!! Not to scare you off, but we are in need of replacing key people - committees, chairs, etc - their students graduated, hence the need. This is a great way to get to know other band parents, and to get information as it happens, instead of waiting for these weekly e-mails. If you can't make it tonight (or I've really scared you) then just remember - we meet every second Tuesday of the month at 7:30 pm in the OHS band room. That would make the next meeting July 10.
Update on the new tuba and baritone lines - we are still waiting on word. As soon as I know, you'll know.

Music - your students SHOULD have a copy of three of the songs for the show. It may not have happened at the MS's with the DC trip and the concerts, etc., but if not they can get it on the 28th. We are still waiting on the "battle song", so we will probably have to make cuts in the first song, but part 3, and finale are good to go.

Incoming new people, or on new instruments - get copies of the school songs and have them memorized - you'll be glad you did = more free time for you to swim or SLEEP!!

Please keep August 6 an 9 open on your calendar - August 9 is the day we perform at the State Fair, and the 6th is a field trip to Crew Stadium to watch some of the best drum & bugle corps in the world perform. I have already put in for 2 school buses, but times and cost for tickets have not been published yet. When I know ___________(you'll know).

I hope the summer is going well - all one day of it.

Enjoy the time now! soon, FB will be here, and things will get crazy!

Parents:
I am still in the process of updating the e-mails, so please share, just in case:

On the website is an opportunity for fundraising -m fat rabbit race on June 25.

Due to painting of the band room, and inventory, and (hopefully) getting new instruments, sign out for instruments for freshmen will not be before June 28th rehearsal.

Last - After talking to the tour company, they are still willing to take your forms. for Florida....with or without money. I sent in the forms yesterday, and am sending in another lot today. As soon as I get them, I will pass them on.

There, that wasn't so painful, was it?

Stay Dry!!!

Wednesday, May 31, 2006 11:17 AM

Mornin' Parents:

This one will be short:

1. Reminder - tomorrow is the last day for forms - $$ or not - hand them in to your director, and I'll pick them up at 12:30 pm = sending out then.

2. We need help - anyone who has clothing racks REGARDLESS of SIZE - we will need to borrow them for app 2 weeks - 6/12 thru the 26 - we are getting the WHOLE band room painted - floor to ceiling, and we need to put the uniforms on something on stage. Any help along these lines will be greatly appreciated!

Told you it was short.

Good morning parents:

Yesterday went VERY well, in spite of the weather (heat). The band did their best to avoid all the small ones (and not so small) darting in front of us to get candy. It's a shame that the parents of these young ones never buy their kids any treat - which is obvious by the way they and their parents will un out in front of vehicles as well as a row of trombones just for a piece of candy. It got tense especially as we neared the "four corner area. In spite of constantly trying NOT to step on anyone, the band did great.

This week:
We switch to graduation band - people not in this group will not need their instrument = locker clean out
Tuesday (today) - 3-4 pm - the last day for switch practice - after this - you're on your own
Friday - 6/2 - our BB team in the State semi's - 3 pm at the Coop
Thursday - 6/1 - the absolute last day for Florida forms - we have waited this long, we can't wait any longer. If you want to go, but don't have the $$ right now, fill out the form
(on the website) and get it in.
Friday - 6/9 - our Jazz Ensemble in concert at Liberty HS commons - 7:15 to 8 am
Sunday - 6/11 - flag camp starts
Monday - 6/12 - 2 pm ANYONE wanting to help - wee have to move ALL the uniforms, trophys, plaques, loose instruments, etc out of the ban room , clear the upstairs - painting. There will be pizza afterwards (tbd)
Later, that night - music boosters - 7:30 pm in the band room

Long range planning - June 28 - first 4th of July rehearsal - 5-6 pm - OHS bandroom - open to next year's band, as well as this year's seniors

Stay cool,

M lutz

Good morning parents:
Yes, I'm back - for good or bad). I am still in need of e-mail addresses, especially from the incoming freshmen. If you live near someone, or know of someone - please have them e-mail me, and I will then add them to the list.

Forms and deposits due for Florida - at the concert or I will pick up at the MS's on that Monday, May 22. Parents - if you are interested in going, and/or chaperoning, please send in the adult form with deposit. May 29 - Current OHS band - Powell Memorial Parade - Summer shirts and Jeans - white shoes and socks - be there by 9:30 am...still don't know our position in the parade, so I can't give you a definite ending time

Today, I have received the 1st part of our show. We already have the middle song. As soon as I have the complete show, I'll send it to the MS's, so the students have something to practice before camp - all should have the show DOWN as well as the school songs - Fight Song, Alma Mater, and Star Spangled Banner.

I absolutely hate this, but I commend you all for accessing this site and keeping up to date. I pray this will not go on too much longer.

Good morning parents:
Well, it's May! Some of you may have heard that there was a chance that we would cancel the trip to Florida due to lack of interest. Well, the "lack" was being projected way beyond reality by the few who have chosen not to go. We have app 87% planning on going, so, we are full speed ahead. Today I plan on sending in the contract, and you can look forward to being contacted by our tour company directly as to payment plan. This will take the whole operation out of our over worked treasurer - Mr. Barnes (he has enough to worry about - the various camps as well as budgets). He will send information to the company as to reduction in individual bills based on the fundraisers we have done, and plan to do.
I hope to figure out how to get the itinerary attached...when I do, it well be sent ASAP.

Along that line, please remember that the 'butterbraid" order forms are due this Thursday. Someone will be picking them up from the MS's as well. Delivery is May 18 at the OHS band room - 5-6 pm

Also, don't hesitate to e-mail Mrs. Fox to sign up for Parade of Homes - the list is filling up FAST! her address (and yes, this is correct!) - ellenfox@insight.rr.com

Upcoming dates:

Switch classes - every Monday at OHS band room from 3-4 pm - open to current 8,9,10, and 11 graders. These will continue until Memorial Day.

Percussion tryouts are this Tuesday (tomorrow) at the HS band room from 4:30 pm to 8:30 pm.

And last, Music Boosters are next Monday - 7:30 pm in the OHS band room...I encourage all parents to attend, but especially 8th grade - and I promise, no one will sign you up for anything...that will happen at the following meeting! LOL

Enjoy the May weather!

Monday, April 24, 2006 7:18 AM

Good Monday Morning!
Wow! Are these Mondays getting harder to wake up, or what? Anyway, preparations are under way for the May concert, Powell Memorial parade, and let's not forget Graduation. All these dates are on the website (from previous e-mails), so I'm not going to bore you with them today. I do want to go over the changed dates for the fundraiser (pastry)

April 20 - May 4 (turn in on May 4th)

Delivery - May 18 - at the OHS band room - 5-6 pm

Reminder - this fundraiser is to help defray the cost of Band camp, as well as a trip. The money raised is credited to your student.
Another fundraiser coming up, with individual credit, is parking cars for Parade of Homes. Yes, we did it last year, but they liked us so much, they asked us back for an encore!
Please e-mail our chairperson - ellenfox@aol.com for more information and signing up. Both fundraisers are for current HS band/flag members and incoming 8th graders.

Also - reminder that tonight we re-start our private lessons for anyone planning to switch to another instrument (especially tuba, bari horn and mellophone). These FREE lessons are from 3-4 pm every Monday until Memorial day.

The next big "thing" coming up is the percussion tryouts for battery and sideline for the 2006/07 marching band.

That's all for now,

M Lutz

Tuesday, April 18, 2006 8:34 AM

Good morning parents:
(I know, it's Tuesday, but I took Monday off)
How ya'll doing? The weather is turning nice, the days are longer, and all is well with the world. OK, now for reality:

Please help our concessions - if in doubt, just show up, especially to either Shanahan or OHS on a Tues, Wed, or Thurs - there's probably an event going on. The days are also on our band website - olentangyband.com

We are also in the process of preparing for the end of the year, as well as getting ready for next year. Eight grade parents - I will put an "8" after the event if 8th graders are encouraged to attend, or are required.

April 19 - 3:00 pm - Mandatory flag meeting for 2006-07 flag corps (8)
April 20 - 3:30 pm - Field Commander Tryouts
April 24 - Switch session - tuba, baritone &/or mellophone (marching french horn) 3-4 pm new people to these instruments, especially (8) are ENCOURAGED to attend
May 2 - Percussion tryouts (8)
May 21 - Spring band concert 2-3 pm, awards 3-4:30 pm, dessert (everyone brings something) at app 4:30 pm - Concert Band, Jazz Ensemble, Wind Ensemble, and Senior Solos
May 29 - Powell Memorial Parade - there by 9:30 am - more later
June 4 - 6 pm Graduation- grad band - need to be there by 5 pm

This is just a sample of what we're trying to keep track. And it's not all - you know something will "pop" up.

There was a snafu with the getting out of our brochures to the MS, so I'll get back to you ASAP as to turn in dates as well as delivery.

Florida is a go, and we're working out some major details. In a nutshell - leave noon on Dec 26th, perform at both Disney and Universal, meals, Capitol One Bowl game tickets...all for, at the worst, $860. Returning at noon on January 2nd.
We are working diligently to bring down that price through fundraising (ind account) as well as others in the near future (car washes, sponsors, etc ). Again, we will be getting out information this summer as well. We have also started planning for the parking of cars at Parade of Homes (like last year). Yes, 8th grade, you can also participate. Contact Ellen Fox at - ellenfox@insight.rr.com

Enjoy the weather (before it changes -again!)

M Lutz

Monday, April 10, 2006 8:42 AM

Good morning Parents,
April 10...this year is rushing headlong to the end. Sorry, it does sound depressingly final doesn't it? Some items to note:

The fundraiser planned to start today will not start until Thursday...if we can get a parent(committee) to handle this. With the plans for Florida, tryouts, etc., I just cannot do this. I you are interested (collecting the forms,, and then mailing them, think about it and come tonight to MUSIC BOOSTERS tonight at 7:30 pm

The annual awards banquet planned for the 22nd of May will not happen. Instead, the seniors voted and want the awards to happen RIGHT after the concert on the 21st of May. After the awards, we will have desserts in the Commons. For those of you (senior parents) waiting three years to go first, Sorry, ask your student about it. Their main argument for this change is the fact of one less day to "take off work, miss practice, etc, during a very busy time for them". And I am respecting their wishes, as the seniors are the driving force at the awards.

Our website - Olentangyband.com and now a percussion website - olentangypercussion.com If you have a percussionist, and especially if you or they did not make the meeting last Thursday, you better go to the site - our new percussion advisor, Mr. Brian Bell, has it "chock" full of information - music dates, etc.

If you have a student who is planning to switch to another instrument, have them come by the OHS band room any (every?) Monday from 3-4 pm. We will have student leaders from those instruments here to help with the transition, as well as your truly for the more "difficult" changes (ie:piccolo to tuba). We will continue this until the last week of school - so we can get the student currently involved in sports.

Upcoming dates:
April 13 - Fundraiser Kick off at all three buildings
April 20 - field commander tryouts - 3:30 pm - open to anyone with at least 1 year's experience in band
May 2 - 4:30 to 8:30 pm - Percussion tryouts
May 21 - (Sunday) - 2 pm - Senior Farewell concert - Theater
3 pm - Awards - Theater
May 29 - Powell Memorial Parade (current HS band members only) - report time - 9:30 am - Summer shirts and Jeans

June 4 - Graduation band - at Germain amphitheater - time TBA
June 8 - Last day of Exams

Not a whole lot Happening soon, but May is fast filling up.

See you tonight!

M Lutz

Good Morning Parents:

Well, here we are, the last week of the 3rd nine weeks = 10 weeks left of school!! And what's going on the rest of the year? Here's a glimpse:

Friday - Jazz Ens at Oak Creek

April

April 18 - Track - 4:30 open - need 6 people

May 2 - Lacrosse - 5 pm open - need 6 people

For the above - please have your student sign you up on the lists in the band room, (and they can help as well - service hours), or e-mail Mrs Karl or Mrs King -
dfdwking@insight.rr.com - Mrs King
rkarl@insight.rr.com - Mrs Karl

Friday past, What can I say? Those who were there thought both groups did exceptionally well! As did I, and plan to tell them so today (and I did on Friday night, but maybe not all were present). Sometimes, this happens. We were not the only bands affected - Both New Albany's bands, Thomas Worthingotn's C band, Pick North C Band, ...there were 1pp 13 bands that played, and only 4 got superiors, 2 TW, 1 Kilborne, and 1 Central Crossing. All I know is the kids did their best, and I cannot ask more than that. I am proud of them, and they have no one to apologize to or for. (to quote Forrest) "And that's all I have to say on that".

Trip - I am talking to another tour company tomorrow after school, but it seems we WILL be traveling this December, but it will take spring break to confirm prices, etc. We are planning fundraising, both general and student account, so keep watching these e-mails.

If your eighth grader has opted out of band for next year, please e-mail me and I will remove you from our lists and not send these aggravating e-mails.
If you know of someone who should be getting these, and aren't, please either send me their address, or have them e-mail me.

Have an uncluttered break!

M Lutz

Monday, March 13, 2006 7:57 AM

Parents,
As promised, as soon as I found out, you find out:

Concert Band - leaves OHS at 3:45 pm, performs at 5:30 pm, returns with Wind Ensemble (10:45 pm)

Wind Ensemble - Leave OHS 7:45 pm, Performs at 9:30 pm, returns at 10:45 pm

Yes, concert band people, I know there is some major down time in between...maybe to hear a couple of other bands (concept), or if necessary (or in choir), you can have your student after we perform (sometime around 6:30 pm). Remember, please don't ask me to allow you to take another's child, w/o a note from their parental unit.

Wind Ensemble people - If you want to bring your own member to the contest and not mess with the bus, please have your student bring in a note to that effect.

The truck will be leaving with the concert band (as soon as we get a driver - hint hint tony/bob).

Have a nice week!

Friday night 7 pm - opening night
Sat - 7 pm performance
Sunday - 2 pm performance

Call for pit is always 1 hour before performances. Dress is concert band uniform, with ladies getting bow ties (so we look like the ship's orchestra)

We are still waiting for times for Thomas Worthington (March 17th). When I know, you'll know!! (ain't e-mails grand?!)

The flag tryouts stated by me in the last e-mail was wrong - The REAL dates are March 21 and 22 (Tues and Wed.) My bad.

That's all for now. See you at the show!

Good morning parents:
Again, an even slower week, so I'll try to give you some dates to remember.

First - results from Saturday - 7 ones and 4 twos. One student went comments only, due to the fact that his song wasn't on the list. So OHS did very well!

Second - Pit - rehearsal this Thursday (tomorrow) from 3-6:30 (we have been getting done early, just a head's up Mom & Dad);
This Monday (no school) from 2-5 pm

Third - I know some of you are getting 2 e-mails - one from your HS student's address, and one from your 8th grader's. When summer comes, if this is a problem, please e-mail me and I'll try to consolidate your addresses.

Last - Here are some dates to remember:
March 3, 4, 5 - Musical
17 - Large group contest at Thomas Worthington - times TBA (won't know until the week of)
21 and 22 - Flag Corps tryouts - 3:30 pm until app 6 pm
25 - 1st day of Spring Break

April - 20 - Field Commander tryouts - 3- 5 pm
last weekend is State Large Group

May - second week - percussion auditions
THERE IS NO CONCERT PLANNED FOR MOTHER'S DAY Even though it says so on the Olentangy official calendar.
29 - No school, but Powell Memorial Parade

June - 4th of July rehearsals - more later
July
Tuesdays and Thursdays - 5-7 pm - open band rooms (not on the 4th)
24 - 9 to noon (section leaders), 1 to 4 pm new members, 5-7 all the band
25, 26, 27, 28 - precamp - 5-7 pm
30 - Aug 4th BAND CAMP - Heartland Conference Center

Tentative fall schedule (it WILL change, but just what we have so far)
September
16 - HIghland Festival - start time 4 pm
23 - Grove City invitational - start time 4 pm
30 - Homecoming Dance (pride day?)
October
7 - Preview of Champions - Thomas Worthington - start time - 5 pm
21- New Philadelphia competition - start time - 4 pm

A couple notes about the above, yes I know there will be conflicts, that cannot be helped - If we avoid soccer, then we run into VB and CC. We will try to get times to make it work for as many to march as possible. Our performing time will depend on how many C, B and A bands are there - we will be in AA this year - the largest bands and the last to compete.
And last, please remember the list is very tentative (as we found out last year with the TW mess - I am applying in MARCH to all of these instead of summer). I know many of you need these dates to make plans.

Good Monday morning parents:

February 13th - already!! Tonight the music boosters will meet at 7:30 pm in the OHS band room, and the 8th grade parents are "officially" invited, and I guarantee, that no one will be volunteered for a job (at least not this month - LOL). The band camp fundraiser is going fine, at least as far as I can tell. The big sellers so far were two freshman boys who sold outside a Krogers, and got $90 knocked off their band camp bills, each, in app 3 hours. We had 400 booklets printed, and have sold app 271 inn 5 days, not counting the MS's (I haven't had a chance to check on them yet). We will sell these until they're all gone, so if you have not heard of this yet, get with your young person, and/or come tonight, and I'll set you up to sell.

Two other things going on this week:

Friday - 3-6:30 pm - pit combo (aka orchestra) rehearses with the cast for the first time. These are always quite interesting (pray for us!!)

Saturday - from 8:30 am until 11 am - OHS band students competing at Granville HS - Solo and Ensemble...10 solos and 2 ensembles involving 30 students from band. Choir students will also be participating - with everyone done by noon, due to a show choir competition at Teays Valley HS. Granville HS was VERY accommodating and if you get a chance, thank the host director...I know I have and will.

Monday and Tuesday - no school, but the pit will be rehearsing with the cast from 2-5 pm on Tuesday.

That's all for now...isn't this a good time of year?!!!

Good Morning Parents,
well winter has reared its ugly head, and everyone around us is delayed or closed...so I will get to hear the students complain, and explain why we should be among that number...like I have anything to do with the decision! Ahhh winter.

Happenings this week: (kind of quiet-just the way we like it!)
Monday, February 6th - Dr Griffin will be here working with the jazz ens, and maybe the concert bands

Tuesday, February 7th - kick off of our fundraiser for camp - a kind of coupon book. orders must be turned in by Tuesday, Feb 14. The student will make 50% ($10) per order.
All the bands, including both middle schools will have the opportunity to participate - it is not required, but the $$goes into the student's account, and music boosters make NOTHING on this.

Thursday, Feb 9th - Strings concert at 7 pm in the theater

Friday, Feb 10th - student run Pep band for the homecoming BB game

Monday, Feb 13th - Music Boosters - OHS band room 7:30 pm, 8th grade parents welcome!!

Saturday, Feb 18th - Solo and Ensemble Contest at Granville HS - 8 am to whenever - different events from app 24 HS's performing every 8-10 minutes. We should have times very soon.
Many soloists still owe for this event - $12.00 - and must be paid before 3 pm Friday, Feb 17. Ensembles are paid by the Boosters.

Monday and Tuesday, Feb 20 & 21 - No school (Musical rehearsal w/pit & cast - 3-6 on Tuesday)

I know, I know, I said it's pretty quiet, and it is...remember middle of FB season, with games, rehearsals, and contests? I rest my case.

Stay Warm,

M Lutz

Saturday, January 28, 2006 2:44 PM

Good afternoon parents:
I am writing this to you because I will not be in school on Monday, and didn't want you to miss (or think you had) the weekly e-mail.

The Olentangy Band has lost a family member, taken much too early - Christina Irvin/Fricke. She was a member of the flag corps, and flute player in band, and assisted Heather with the 2004-05 flag corps. Her husband, Brett Irvin, was a trumpet player in the the band and president his senior year. Christina was hit by a semi on 23 Jan 12th. She passed on Friday, January 27, in the morning. Her funeral is Monday, hence my not being in school.

Mom and Dad, what can we say? Death is a part of life, but that doesn't make it any easier. All I know is, hold you children a little closer today.

The meeting scheduled for January 30th is still on. I do believe Christina would want it that way.
Eighth graders and their parents - the meeting will start in the OHS theater at 7 pm.
Current members that are planning to speak - please be here by that time.

Life does go on, and we must make the most of it.

Good morning parents:
Not a lot going on, just same ol, same ol - We have a meeting with the 8th graders and their parents next Monday, Jan 30 at 7 pm.
We do need someone to "take charge" to supply the refreshments in the band room to the students.
As of this morning, we have app 62 freshmen "signed up" for next year. I know as well as you, that schedule conflicts, cold feet, and other factors come in to play, but we need to plan for this. If my numbers are correct on the returning members, then we are looking at over 150 for next year, with 1/3 being new! A blessing and a challenge!

Just FYI.

We have been confirmed for Thomas Worthington on March 17 (Friday) night - please keep this day free - both Concert band and Wind Ensemble compete here as a qualifier for State in May. Times, etc., later.

Band camp July 30 through Aug 4th, and we will have separate buildings for boys and girls. For this reason, please consider helping us out with chaperoning, even if it can only be 1 or 2 days. We anticipate needing app 5-10 women and 5-10 men.

Enjoy the warm weather!!

Good morning parents:
As of this Tuesday, everyone has passed th band exam ( in case any were worried). I do believe that's a first. We have always had a small few not pay attention, or take it seriously, so Hurrah!

I do need to tell you that this Thursday, Jan 19th, is the LAST day to register for Solo and Ensemble competition at Granville HS - it must be post marked by the 20th, so there you go.

We do have Pit rehearsal this Wed and Thursday - 2:50 to 4 pm - still looking for a guitar , banjo, and bass player.

That's all for now - isn't January uneventful??!! hope it stay's that way!

Monday, January 09, 2006 7:42 AM

Good morning Parents,
Well, here we are, the last week of the first semester! Does time fly or what?! Seems like only yesterday, we were in the "throes" of marching band. That was over two months ago!

Anyway, tonight is the first meeting of our music boosters with the new cabinet of officers (we change on the calendar year) . The meeting is at 7:30 pm in the HS bandroom....we'll be discussing the new truck, etc., trips for different groups, as well as what else - fundraising (can't live with it, can't live without it!). In all reality, shouldn't be a long meeting esp for this time of year.

Exam schedule for those who haven't seen it:

Wednesday - 1st, 4th, and 10th periods
Thursday - 2nd, [5/6,7/8] - band, and 11th periods
Friday - 3rd, 8/9, and make ups

Each exam is app 2 hours in length.

The Wed after exams - the 18th - is the absolute last day I can have anyone or group apply for solo and ensemble - I must have it in by the 19th.

Keep January 30 or 31 free - one of those days will be the eighth grade meeting in the OHS theater. More by next week.

Good Morning Parents:

I hope the holidays went well. I know that last night went very well...GO BUCKS!! Not a lot going on, but a couple dates to remember:

Jan 5 - after school - 1st meeting of the pit (instrumentation posted on the board - no strings this year)

Jan 6 - last day to turn in information for Solo & Ensemble Contest - (Feb 18 - Granville HS)

Jan 9 - Music Boosters - 7:30 pm in the band room

Jan 10 - after school - pit

Jan 11, 12, 13 - Semester Exams

Jan 16, 17 - No School

January is a relatively quiet month, and the only thing I need to add is the 8th grade meeting for both schools (here in the theater) by later this month. I will be getting with the MS directors as to possible dates, and get back to you later ( we will need some students as well as parents for this).

Good morning parents:
Very nice concert yesterday! A small "glitch" with getting everyone here in time for pictures (way to "man up" Sai!), but it went well, and the groups performed very well, esp, since we didn't have school on Friday to fine tune the songs. I am very proud of all of them, and I hope you've told your band member the same.

Today we have music boosters - 7:30 pm in the band room, and we're voting on officers.

Friday the Jazz Ensemble will play at the OHS girl's BB game, with alumni that are in town. We will definitely make some noise!

The Friday we come back from break - I will need information for solo & ensemble - name of song/composer; or the number out of the song book (in my office, or at Stanton's sheet music).
We have to send in the school application by midnight that night. We will talk about this in band today.

Also, challenge season starts today. This will also be discussed today in band. In a nutshell, this is a chance for a student who didn't do well on the audition, and think they can do better. It is also for the student who has been working hard to improve, while others haven't. When you see the sheet, remember these are blind challenges - I don't know who is in there, unless they talk, etc.

Also, below is the list of people who STILL owe their MB uniform parts, or for the concert jacket/shirt. Please take care of this ASAP, so I don't have to turn it over to the office.

Happy Holidays!! (If that offends, then Merry Christmas, Happy Chanukah, Safe Ramadan, Quiet Kwanza, and a Solid Solstice! - now I'm in trouble - I probably forgot someone - like the Druids!)

Good Thursday morning:

Just two items -
1. No matter what the weather tomorrow, and what happens with school, we will STILL have the concert on Sunday. The only thing that may affect Sunday's concert is a storm that day, and that is not predicted

2. Dates for 2006 band camp - July 30 thru Aug 4th (Sunday-Friday). The cost will probably go up, but we won't know how much until January/February. (By the 8th grade meetings)

3. Reminder - website "olentangyband.com"

The bands have all been working very hard to put this concert together in three weeks, and I know you'll be happy with the results!!

See you Sunday,

M Lutz

Monday, December 05, 2005 7:25 AM

Good Monday morning parents:

There is even less things this week than last!, but there are a couple reminders of upcoming things:

1. This Sunday - 1:30 pm pictures (we will open the doors as soon as we can) - winter concert at 2 pm - OHS theater

2. Monday, December 12th - Music Boosters meeting - voting for next year's officers

3. Also, challenges start this week, I'll include an explanation of how this works next week.

4. Now until Feb - students getting ready for solo and ensemble contest especially ensembles!
A. Contest date - Saturday February 18
B. Site - Granville HS (near Newark)
C. What - Solo's and small groups (no more than 6 in most cases) perform for a judge. When we hosted this, we had over 1,000 events from 20 HS's. This is big.
D. Why - performing music where you (the student) are the ONLY one performing that part, and to the level it needs to be performed, helps in the large ensemble (band)
Many students need these ratings for scholarships/applications for college
Most solos should be taking privately...i cannot give the extreme help these people need. I will try to help as much as I can, but w/o private instruction, the results may not be to their liking. Ensembles are forming now, and will practice mostly outside of school As we get closer to the 18th, we will try to use some time during school to help these groups prepare.
E. How - have your son/daughter get with good players, of their own like instrument (ie: soprano clarinet quartet; trumpet quartet) or different (ie: woodwind quintet, brass sextet). The they should look over the music we have, and if not acceptable, plan a trip to Stanton's sheet music (downtown Columbus) to select their song. The song MUST be on the list (I have a copy of the list) in order to perform.

F. Cost - solos - $12.00....ensembles - $16.00 (paid by OMB)
I hope this has not totally confused those who have never participated in this. There will be more information given out as time goes on.

Well, that's all for now - see you this Sunday!

Good Monday morning parents:

These next couple of weeks will definately be shorter compared to marching band ( and that's a GOOD thing!)
I hope you all survived the holiday weekend, especially the shopping on Friday. I out with my family at 4:30 am! This might have been the last time for that!

This week:
District honors band at Licking Valley HS rehearsal on Dec 1 (evening) and all day the 3rd, with concert at 3 pm. We have 2 students in this group - Drew Browning and Erin Wilson.

Choir concert - 2 pm in the OHS theater. Could be some surprises as far as the final song as to personnel.

Don't forget - The Band Concert is the following week in the theater, with pictures at 1:30 pm, and doors opening right after, and the concert planned to begin at 2 pm.

Music Boosters the next day (12th) at 7:30 pm in the band room.

Due to concerns about our website, and security, Mr Moore has added codes. The main site is still open to all, but pics and video is through an ID and password. They are available at the band room.

I know this won't keep hackers out (LOL), but it will keep the pics, etc - to just our people....you know, band people (the best kind!)

See, I told you it would be short!

Parents:
Sorry I didn't send anything yesterday- I was out sick. But back today! (yeah!) Anyway, not much going on (isn't it nice??!!)

We are sizing the jackets for concert band/wind ensemble, as well as shirts (for those who need them). we will be wearing these on our concert on December 11 at 2 pm (pics at 1:30, doors will open right after).

Some of you have been asking about pictures of New York parade - the official site. Access the address below, then click on parade, then click on veterans day, then Olentangy. You will see app 6-7 pages of pictures the photographer took, as well as different packages you can purchase.

Morning Parents,
Just a couple of reminders:

1. Please get the uniforms home and washed for the last time. We need to get this part of the year done, as well as need the space.

2. Reminder about tonight - my understanding is that each school asked for 3,000 tickets - they are both bringing the whole town! If you can help, it's not too late!

3. Reminder of the Holiday Concert - December 11 at 2 pm with yearbook pictures at 1:30. The doors will open right after the pictures are done. The Concert Band will lead off the concert, followed by our Jazz Ensemble, with the Wind Ensemble last. As a finale, we will have a combine bands and audience sing along (you don't have to if you don't want to)!

4. The below is from our school's PR person. This is in regards to posting pictures, etc., on the web. These concerns were brought up and I have now informed you all

"The potential problem comes in when parents take pictures of students who are not their children and post them online without express written permission from that child's parent. The reason this could be a problem is because the Web truly is world wide and the owner of the site has no way of limiting who does and does not view the pictures nor can they limit what those people may do with the pictures. I wasn't trying to limit their Web site with the district's policy, but simply to let them know of the personal legal liability they may be incurring by putting pictures of other people's kids on the Web."

Ok, that's all for now. I am still waiting on word on how to order pictures about New York from the official site. Hopefully, next week I'll have that info.

Monday, November 14, 2005 8:18 AM

Good Morning Parents!
Well, we survived! Not only that, your student did you and us proud! More on that later. Let me give some information:

1. As soon as I find out the website for ordering pictures after the fact, I'll let you know.
2. THIS FRIDAY - WE'RE HOSTING A PLAYOFF FB GAME!!!! This is a chance to make BIG BUCKS!!
----Parents of Music Students at OSMS, OOMS and OHS,

We are hosting a playoff game on Friday November 18. This is an added event, so this is truly found money if we have enough help to make is a great night. If you are interested in helping to work that evening please contact Debbie King at dfdwking@insight.rr.com or 740-548-7715. We need 30 adults to help that night. The teams are both approximately 1 hour away from us so we have the potential to be very busy on both sides of the gate. The stand will open at 6:30 p.m. so we need people there by 6:15 p.m.

The teams are - Springfield Shawnee and Clyde...Div III. Clyude will bring their whole town here. Please e-mail above or call to help.

Now, about NY. Our students did everything we asked of them. In some real pressure situations - timing, speed loading and unloading in cramped space while other bands are walking through us, as well as 1/2 of New York!!! It all went very well, the weather was great (for November inn NY), and the traffic was quite amusing (now as we look back...I thanked God on an every minute basis that I was NOT driving!) They also performed very well after standing at the ready line for nearly 3 hours. Long story - the short of it, they decided to have all the military go first, instead of mixed up with civilian (political protests), so there were 2 parades. We didn't know this until that night at the dinner. The walking tour was good, and the Lion King was phenomenal! Getting home was an adventure, with buses getting lost, wind blowing off pieces of the bus, and even engines shutting down. But despite rain, wind and flat tires (on the way over) , we made it! When is our next trip? NOT FOR A WHILE!!

Please, if you see our chaperons that went on the trip, thank them for their time and EXTRA effort. This trip could not have been the success it was, without them. Mr. and Mrs Kotula, Mr and Mrs Trubiani, Mrs Haldeman, Mrs Nelin, Mr and Mrs Karl, Mrs Keim, and Mr Barnes. Mr Brun and I salute you!

As we begin concert season, please remember to wash the uniforms one last time (committee) and get them back by next week. We will also be ordering shirts for the new people, and getting the jackets/ties issued. The concert attire is:

Black jacket and tie (provided), white tux shirt (French collar), black on the bottom (skirt or slacks - if skirt, please below the knee), black socks and black shoes. The marching band shoes will suffice.

They will need these by December 11 - our first concert in the Theater - 2 pm.

See you on yet another Friday night! (this next one at the playoff!)

Parents:
Sorry about this, but with no power, and then no server at the HS, I had to wait to get home and am trying to get some last minute things out. Hope this works. Please do not e-mail me back due to having to go back to my elementary for class, etc.

1. All student drivers planning to keep their cars at OHS need to park in the Junior lot only. Do not park in the senior lot nor the staff lot; Chaperones can park in the staff lot.

2. Parents on the washing committee - the school is open, but you'll have to go through the main entrance to return the uniforms. Please make every effort to do this today, and not at 5 am tomorrow - my ulcers can't take it!

3. Due to many of you planning to clean, pack, or just go over your instrument...need to get in earlier tomorrow. I will plan to be at the hs by 4 am.

4. Due to a mix up on the dates, I was planning to send out another mailing of the pic forms, but no-one turned in yesterday, I forgot to remind yesterday, and now it's too late. There aill be a website available to order pictures after we return.

I hope this is all that's left - see you bright and early tomorrow!

Parents:
Some of you have expressed a desire for your band member to meet up with relatives while we're in NY. We want to accommodate you as best we can. You have all the times that we have, and Friday's times at the aircraft carrier, and dance depend on our spot in the parade (won't know until that morning).

Now, so that we can keep some kind of security, please have your student bring in a note from you.
In it please include:
  • App time and day this meeting is planned.
  • If this person just plans to visit, or take the student somewhere.
  • -----That if going somewhere, the person knows what our schedule entails, and if needed - bed checks, etc.
  • If at all possible, a picture would be fantastic.
  • Please let this person know to come to a chaperone/staff member first, so we don't automatically call the police!

These are here for obvious reasons....the way things are today, we take the responsibility of your giving your child to us on this trip very seriously...while at the same time allowing some to meet with grandparents, siblings, aunts, etc. If there are any questions, please e-mail me BEFORE Thursday morning...I don't know how coherent I'll be at 4:30 am
Don't forget - tonight is the last day for the fundraiser at City Bar b que - I was there last night, were you? (try the 1/2 slab of ribs, with the hot sauce - you'll need water).

    Good Monday morning!
Well, here we are - the week we perform in NY city. Long time coming! We will be outside all this week (weather permitting) practicing on the parade.
    Schedule for Thursday morning:

Arrive by 5 am (loading crew by 4:30 please!)
At 5 - luggage check - female in choir room, male in band room...after luggage checked, take out to bus. load instrument as well.
5:55 am - meet in band room with carry on and uniform bag/hatbox in seat.
6 am - leave for NY

Sunday morning - we plan to arrive by 4 am, but as well found out on Friday night, sometimes plans don't always happen, and you can't control it.
Speaking of which, I was and am very proud of our young people. The handled the situation with very little problem (the biggest was whining about the video). It was a bad situation, that thank God wasn't worse (injuries), and we were only two hours late. The team held the number 1 team in D2 in the state to 7 points (tied going into the 4th quarter), and then Avon Lake got "lucky" (twice) and won 21-7. We had a great crowd!

To make this process go faster (luggage check) please go over what they've packed...we don't want to send anyone away due to contraband. If you have to ask yourself, mom and dad, if this item is allowed, then it probably isn't. I don't anticipate any issues, but forewarned is forearmed.

    Some future dates to remember:

November 7 & 8 (today & tomorrow) - 25% goes to music boosters - City Bar-b-que, as well as gift certs! (attached)
14th - full time concert band/wind ensemble (YAY!) and Music Boosters - 7 :30 pm
    23 27 - Thanksgiving break

    December 4 - Choir concert
11 - Band concert (orange and shanahan 8th, OHS jazz, concert bands, and wind ensemble) - pics at 1:00 pm; Jazz starts at 1:30 pm
16 - Jazz ensemble(and alums) play at Girls' BB game, dinner after
    17-Jan 3 - break!

That's about all....see you bright and early Thursday morning!

Parents: This one is short I promise!

    1. If you need tickets for Lion King, even if you have told me or e-mailed in the past, please e-mail me again before this Friday, so we can keep what we need, and give up what we don't.
As of today, I have the Rickabaughs with 2, Mr Talbott with 1, and the Messners with 2; Anyone else needs to get back to me ASAP!

    2. For Friday's trip, snacks, and drinks are permitted on the bus....crackers, etc...we are planning to eat on the way (on their own as to paying), as well as getting a small snack from Avon Lake Music Boosters at 3rd quarter. But if you know your teenager, and they will something more, then just as on the NY trip, they can bring and eat food on the bus, as long as they keep the trash in the trash!

    3. I still have app 27 Ameritours health forms still out. Please get these in by Friday, so I can get them in the mail and in their hands by next Thursday!

    4. Pic forms are also due by Friday. Same reasons.

That's all for now....probably something will come up by tomorrow!

    Parents:

Sorry, but expect e-mails almost on a daily basis - due to changing situations for both this week's playoffs and next week's trip(although, next week's time, etc., are pretty well set) - but expect updates and reminders)

    1. There are buses for the band - charters....thanks for the most part to Mr. rick Barnes for getting the check, and taking it to the company. This was definitely above and beyond. If he hadn't,we might have lost them to the other 15 HS's looking for buses on Monday morning to their playoffs!!!

    2. There are three buses going at 4 pm please see below and contact the person in charge. All parents and students (not the band - we get in for free) are being asked to purchase their tickets to the game at OHS, not at the game...our understanding is that this will SRO (standing room only!)...so don't wait until the last minute, you may not get a ticket!

The Student Council has 3 Laketrail busses meeting in the Sr. Parking Lot and leaving at 4:00
Price includes the ticket to the game $22
Contact Bonnie Welch if you are interested in those busses 740-657-4147 and you are not a student.
There were @ 120 students who have expressed interest in attending the game today. So currently there is @ one bus extra.

The Thornberry's have booked another bus (Cardinal)
Price for the ride only $17.00 (this line was a little more expensive) SO don't forget to purchase your game ticket at school!
Contact the Thornberry's voice mail 740-368-9521 and get your spot reserved!

This bus will begin loading in the stadium parking lot at 4:00 and plan to leave by 4:15.

I am encouraging you all to please help spread this info on. We want to fill all these busses so that no one comes up short. It should be a fun ride up!

    Go Braves!!!!!

    Diana Shumaker

Mr. Lutz- will you please pass this info on to any band parents that would like to join us?
Coach T- could you get this info to the coaches wives
Mrs. Farry- could you get this info out on Braves on line. (Paulla Thornberry said there is a chance we could book one more bus if we see there is more interest.
Dora and Marlys- pls pass this on to the cheerleaders parents too.
    DID I FORGET ANYONE?

    3. The weather looks like it will be marvelous!!! (yes, I checked for Avon Lake, not OHS) - high of 68, low of 48, 20% chance for rain...this will feel like the Bahamas compared to last week!

    4. Today we are having auditions for chairs from 3 pm to 5:30 pm. Results will not be known until tomorrow (I hope).

    5. Thursday - 7 pm chaperone meeting, at Paneras on 23 (in front of Meijers)...please only chaperons for the NY trip - we may not have much room - just to go over duties and expectations.

Well, that's about it for today!!! Who knows what tomorrow will bring?

    Good morning parents:

I hope you and your band student have defrosted from last Friday's game!!! Man, was it cold...yes, that was ice(frost) on the bass drum shells! This Friday will be warmer (yes, even on the lake!) - 62 for high and 48 for a low - Avon Lake , Ohio. This is where we are playing this Friday night. The defending State Champion. Oh well, its a good practice for the band and loading the buses from underneath for New York.
The music boosters have suggested that we use charters. No problem, but to save money, we are only planning on taking two 55 pass = little room for extra people...sorry. If you have chaperoned before, and can be here by 2 pm, please e-mail Mrs Kotula. I will be getting with her as to the numbers we will have available. cskotula@aol.com

    Schedule for Friday:
Students out at 1 pm - change into bibbers, etc - traveling uniform
Load at 1:30 pm - all instruments under the bus except sideline (truck and trailer leaves at 1 pm)
    leave at 2 pm
dinner (on own) in Mansfield - many fast food places
kickoff at 7:30 - AL is the home band = they do pregame, and we're on first at 1/2 time (like last week). And lie last week, due to only getting out twice this week - we will be repeating last week's show including away O.
return app 1 am - depending on game time, loading, traffic. please be ready for the phone call. Timely pick up this week especially (and next Sunday - 4 am) will be GREATLY appreciated!

    Schedule for this week
Monday (DS=during school) - out - parade practice
Tues - DS and after school - auditions for chairs and concert band/wind ensemble
    Wed - concert band (finally!)
Thurs and Fri - DS - out - 1/2 time show

    Next week:
Monday, Tues, Wed, - DS - out - parade rehearsal
Thursday - here BY 5 am
Inspection of luggage, instruments, etc., load underneath
    leave by 6 am

Sunday - arrive back app 4 am - unload and get home!

I told you it is gonna be crazy!
    Now for a couple reminders:
    1. The company's health forms - please get them in (attached to last weeks' e-mail, or at website) - I need to send out on Friday
    2. If you want a picture of band in NY, please get that form in as well(attached) - I need to send out on Wed, Nov. 9
That's about it (whew!) I hope what little sanity I have left doesn't leave me this week.

    Parents:
Wow did we have an eventful weekend! Rain, Senior game, locking up a playoff spot, and the "mudbowl" on Saturday! We do have this weekend off (whew!), but there's stuff this week (and next) as well!

Some thoughts on Saturday...If I was judging that mess, and a band put it all on the line like we and a couple others did, then they would have to do pretty poor to earn something besides a I from me. And we did really well, considering. The students kept looking down at their feet (duh!) to keep their footing, etc. Well, we'll be talking about this performance for years to come! And I know the students had fun!

    This week's schedule:

Tuesday - NO REHEARSAL - Concert in gym at 7 pm (students here and dressed by 6:30 for warm-up)
Wednesday - eat at Max & Erma's - 20% goes to the band (you MUST have the flyer to qualify - see last week's e-mail, or visit the band room for hard copies)
Thursday -pep band at Max & Erma's 5-6 pm come out and have some fun, then some good eats!
Friday - We clinch home field by beating Dunlin Scioto! Away

    Sat and Sunday - NOTHING

Tuesday, November 1 - Auditions for bands and chairs - 3- 5:30 pm - students sigh up for times in Band room
    Thursday, November 3 - NY Chaperone meeting at Panera's - 7 pm
Friday, November 4 - playoff game. More next week - when I know, you'll know.

November 7&8 - fundraiser at City Bar-b-que (no pep band)

November 10 - leave for NY!

There is a permission form attached (PDF), as well as sent home. Please get these back to me ASAP - the insurance company for our tour company is insisting they have them in their possession BEFORE we leave. Just got this on Saturday afternoon...Not turning them in will not bar your child from attending, but overage will not be guaranteed.

As we wind down the season, I hope you can all attend tomorrow night for remembering with us,

    M Lutz

    Tuesday, October 18, 2005 10:11 AM

    Morning parents:
If you're looking for a place to eat next week, (Wed or Thurs) and would like to be serenaded(Thurs - from 5-6 pm), then open the attachment (here) and use it so the band makes a little $$$ as well. Sorry, with all the goings on (typical Monday), I forgot this part. We will be having something going on the following week with City Bar-b que. More on that later.

    See you Friday &/or Saturday!

    Monday, October 17, 2005 8:24 AM

    Good Monday Morning Parents:

Here we are, the last home game of the season. It has definitely gone by very fast! And "dragged" at the same time! Anyway, here is the schedule for the last two weeks of football:

    Oct 18 - Tuesday rehearsal 3-5 pm
Oct 21 - Friday - no school...students need to be here by 5 pm (rehearsal on Senior show and contest) - no dinner provided
Oct 22 - Saturday - competition at Bloom Carroll HS
    Load at 1:30 pm
    Leave at 2 pm
    perform at 4:45 pm
return right after performance - app 6ish pm
Oct 25 - Tuesday - No rehearsal after school due to concert:
Students here and dressed by 6:30 pm
Concert in Main Gym at 7 pm
    Done by 8 pm
Oct 28 - If going to State - rehearsal 3-5 pm; If not, no rehearsal
Oct 29 - FB game at Dublin Scioto
November 1 - Auditions for chairs and bands - 3-5:30 pm (students sign up for a time)

No after school rehearsals are scheduled for: Playoffs or New York. We may have to schedule something at the last minute due to our results this Saturday. You will be the first to know.

Reminder to parents on the washing committee - please see to it that you get the uniforms back to OHS by 6 pm Tuesday, Oct 25th. There was some confusion that I was referring to this week, but it's next week - for the concert.

Also, a reminder to parents that as of this morning, I have had three requests to not attend this Saturday's contest...According to the handbook - we need two weeks notice for the absence to be considered "excused". Last minute FB game tickets, concert tickets, etc cannot be excused. That doesn't mean the student cannot go to the other activity, it just means that it will be unexcused = a lowering of their grade. Believe me, I understand the dilemma - I too have had to turn down OSU tickets for contest and even Pride Day. Each year, I make a commitment to this program, just as each student does as well. We are hurt by EVERY absence, be it Marching, Concert, or Jazz band. This contest has been on the schedule since July. (handbook). Times were given to us last week - that is the way of ALL contests - MB, Concert band, Choirs, and even solo & ensemble - we won't know times until 7-10 days before the event.

    OK, I'm done venting.

Again, thanks to all the helpers on the sidelines, the backdrop, and those who "hang around" us in the stands.

    Parents,
This just in - as soon as I get it, you get it:

Bloom Carroll competition - Oct 22

    Load at 1:30 pm
    Leave by 2 pm
    Perform at 4:45 pm
Leave right after (like Westerville Central)
Back at OHS around 6:30 pm

Uniform committee - if you cannot take the uniforms that day, and have them back BY TUESDAY AFTERNOON, then don't take them (we have a concert on Tuesday, Oct 25.)

    Directions to bloom carroll hs
    5240 Plum Road
    Carroll, Ohio 43112

270 south to 33 east (towards Lancaster)
app 15 miles to marker 144 on 33, turn left at the traffic light at Winchester/High street (Mcdonalds and Speedway on right)
Follow road app 7/10 of a mile to the stop sign - turn left, and then right into the second entrance past the elementary...buses will enter at the first entrance.

Hope to see you both tonight as well as next week! The band has really improved, and I hope you will see that.

    Thursday, October 13, 2005 7:17 AM

    Parents:
Here is the handout from Monday night. There are hard copies at the front of the band room. I had to do this this way, because I have it saved in "works" format, and many of you cannot open it. So here it is!

New York trip Handout (PDF) (Doc) (Web) (Wordpad)

The questions mostly pertained to health forms and chaperons - but due to privacy concerns, only our nurse and doctor will have access to the forms. If there are any health concerns, we will take the student to our health people. Besides, I don't feel comfortable with making health decisions, and we will always err on the side of caution. (That means we may take a student to a health facility, when you might not, but I'd rather be safe than sorry.

The other major question was about money. I would guess, based on the following, that we will purchase app 7 meals (4 on the road). depending on how much your teenager consumes, I would hazard the guess that $50-$75 should cover this well...since on the road will be at fast food places. The two lunches in New York will probably be pricey, so take this into account. I am also getting "hassled" by our young ladies concerning the size of their luggage. Please help them understand:
---we will be gone app 4 days
    ---we need an outfit for:
------traveling on Thurs, the dinner dance on Friday, around town and on the way home on Sat, and Jammies. That's it, as well as whatever tools (curling iron, etc) needed.

Our space under the bus in limited - and we need to pack ALL our instruments, suitcases, uniform bags, and hat boxes. So please help them with the packing.

Any questions? Please don't hesitate to e-mail.

This Friday is a normal game!!! pregame, halftime, and perform in front of the concession stand.

    See you then,
    M Lutz

    Good Monday Morning Parents:
Well, it's finally here - a weekend off! And well deserved! We have all been working so hard...please enjoy the time off - for next week, we go again.
    Some general dates and times:

Tonight - Music Boosters with NY trip meeting after. Boosters start at 7:30 pm in Band Room.
Tomorrow - after school rehearsal - 3-5 pm - on judges' comments as well as getting the senior show started.
Wednesday - Pep band at Meijers - be there by 4:45 pm - we play at 5 - 5:45 pm - loading band truck at 3:45 pm
Thursday - NOTHING (except percussion sectional - 6-8 pm)
Friday - Home Game with the marching amoeba - AKA Grove City - a very large and loud band ( I think better than Central Crossing, but M. Brun would argue)
Saturday - OSU BEATS MSU ( if OSU can find an offense!)

Next week - Senior week and contest all rolled into one - no times yet on the contest, still waiting for word - should know by this Friday

Now, as to this past weekend - I first want to recognize all the parents (an army!) who have been there for us throughout this season - the pit crew as well as the "wall crew". Especially this past weekend where the wall crew almost became the flying wall crew! Many thanks! But to Mr. and Mrs. Kotula - for the wall, uniforms, munchies after the contest, for going above and beyond - kudos!
And how can we forget Mr Trubiani? He drives the truck - over sees the loading and unloading, as well as the pit - again - kudos. I just wanted to tell these three, as well as the army that their contributions are noticed and appreciated. We really couldn't do this w/o you.

I also want to tell you about the results of this past weekend...no not what the judges said - what you and your students said - that we did much better. Great show. Wow, it's come a long way. and on and on. We asked these kids to do alot this past week, and they did. I just want you to know how proud I was, and am of them. As I have stated to them, the rating is a means, not an ends. If it was an ends, we would practice every night after school, and no one could work, do sports, etc. Well, that's not us. But we do try to put the best performance we can on the field on Friday or Saturday. And we did this past weekend. Can we get better? You bet. Are we going to? I have to believe the answer is yes. So watch closely, and see if we do. By the way, the students will be told this today in rehearsal.

    See you this Friday,

    M Lutz

PS check out the website (www.olentangyband.com) - it's great!

    Monday, October 03, 2005 7:56 AM

    Parents:
Just in - the canal contest decided (and I kind of agree) that all the new additions should be in front of the already scheduled bands...therefore, we will be performing at 4:00 pm, not 4:30 (that's Liberty's time - be supportive!!! we're all tangy) - leave time is now moved up by 1/2 hour to 1 pm.We are still planning to stay for awards, plus to watch 2 of Ohio's best AA bands - Dublin Coffman and Central Crossing. If you need your student before, just meet us at the bus, and they are yours! Awards will be app 5:45 pm.

    M Lutz

    Monday, October 03, 2005 7:30 AM

    Good Morning Parents:
Well, We're over 1/2 way through the season. This week is away at Westerville Central (we now know how to get there and the layout!), with contest on Sat at Canal Winchester. The band did fine this past Saturday at West Cent., but I thought they sounded more confidant on Friday night after the game. The judges felt the same. The break down of scores are on the web site - www.olentangyband.com Mr Moore has been putting our videos from each performance there as well as previous weekly updates
( you can check if you think you might have missed something).

Thanks to all the parents who have been helping on both sidelines - you help is greatly appreciated!

Now, for the schedule for this week:

    Oct 4 - 3-5 pm - rehearsal
Oct 5 - parent teacher conferences
Oct 7 - Away game at Westerville Central - Normal Friday night schedule
Oct 8 - Contest at Canal Winchester
    Leave at 1:30 pm
    Perform at 4:30 pm
    Stay for awards
Back here around 7 pm - PLEASE HELP MR TRUBIANI UNLOAD THE TRUCK - Anytime you're waiting for your student, and the truck pulls up early, please don't hesitate to "pitch in" - it will help us to release the band earlier (and you get home sooner!)

Oct 10 - Music Boosters - 7:30 pm, with NY info/question session right after
Oct 12 - Jazz Ensemble at Meijers - 5-6 pm (inside store) - so I won't be available for P/T conferences
Oct 14 - Home game w/ Grove City - normal Fri schedule
Oct 15 - NOTHING!!! enjoy it as OSU mauls MSU!

    Acouple of issues:
    1. Attached is a "fundraiser" from one of our own - if interested - help yourself
    2. there is still room on the "groupie bus" of parents only going to NY - following us - e-mail hagee629@aol.com if interested.
    3. This week's contest has been foisted upon us - Canal Winchester has graciously allowed us to perform there on a last minute's notice - If we were at Thomas Worthington, everything would have been fine...but it isn't, welcome to real life where no matter what we do, things are out of our control. With this in mind, please make every effort to get your child to contest - either at the HS or meeting us...we will lose points for every open position - it affects our overall picture as well as affects those around the empty spot. I know work, coaches, etc can be tough, but for the group, please make every effort - OK, I'm done.

As to the above - there will be a sign up sheet of those meeting us there - I couldn't keep up with who was doing this last week. We will do everything in our power to work whatever out, but not having many students at the warm-up - I feel really hurt us, especially at the beginning of the show.

    Have a nice week!

    M Lutz

    Thursday, September 29, 2005 8:58 AM

    Hey parents:

Two things that have been nailed down VERY recently - as soon as I know - you know:

    1. October 8th changes - Canal Winchester instead of Thomas Worthington (Thomas had too many bands = we got bumped, as did Watterson) our schedule:
    leave 1:30 pm
    perform 4:15 pm
Staying for awards = app 5:30 pm
Back at school - 7 pm

They have a website for this contest - www.canalwin.k12.oh.us/music and then click "winchester classic"

    2. We will have a BRIEF info meeting for questions and answers after the October 10th music booster meeting. The meeting should start around 8:30, and hopefully be done by 9 pm. Just a last touch base with final itinerary, etc. All are welcome.

Last - If you are planning to meet the band at any contest or game, then you need to make sure your band member has their uniform, hat box, gloves, sash, gauntlets, plume and instrument. I do know a couple of people (CC) are cutting it close this week. We have maps to Westeville Central and of the site at the front of the band room.

Reminder - we are doing a full run thru tomorrow night after the game....please stay and see what we've been working on for the past three months!

Absolute last - special thanks to Tony Trubiani for fixing the two flats on one of our equipment trailers, and to whoever made a new ramp for our keyboards! The students actually "squealed" with delight!

    See you this weekend!

    Good Monday Morning Parents:
Yes, I'm actually getting this update out on time! Anyway, Here we are - contest week, Homecoming, all rolled into one!

    First - Last week:
Friday - the 8th grade seemed to really enjoy themselves, and we hope you enjoyed their performance. Unfortunately, the team lost, but hopefully will come back against this week's 3-1 Pickerington Central.
Saturday - to all who helped, counted, set up, drove and went door to door - THANKS!!! we made $8500 as of this writing. That's
a 14% increase over last year! On behalf of the Music Department - Thank You for the time you gave up last Saturday.

    THIS WEEK
    Tuesday - rehearsal - 3-5 pm
    3-3:30 - with HC court
    3:30 - 5ish - Contest rehearsal
Friday - HC ceremonies at pregame
    1/2 time - songs 2 & 3
After game - complete run of show with props, etc. (dress rehearsal for Sat)

Saturday - Here - loading at 11 am
    leave at 11:30 am
perform at 1:45 pm - Westerville Central HS
Return to OHS app. 3 pm
    Dance starts at 8 pm

Also, As of last week - we have been "cut" from the Thomas Worthington competition(Oct 8th)...due to the date of our postmark on our application (OMEA Regulations). They are in the process of calling the other bands, and if ANY drop out, we are first on the list to be added back on. The director at Worthington should be getting back to me today, but I wanted to give you all a heads up. If we cannot go to Worthington, I will contact Canal Winchester (same day) and see if we can't work something out. We will know by mid week what's going on, so look for a second update around Wednesday.

Remember washing committee (doing GREAT, by the way), We need the uniforms again on Saturday, so don't take them home to wash on Friday!

    late weekly update
    Good Wednesday Morning Parents:
Well, we have a fog delay so here I am at school getting caught up from yesterday! That's what happens when you don't get your work done ! LOL

Anyway, contest last week went very well - 3 I's and 4 II's, but more importantly, the comments from the judges were right on the mark...same things we have been working on since band camp. So we know we are close, and with the final sets done and on the field (Tues rehearsal - it also went very well!), we are getting ready for Westerville Central contest.

Here are some upcoming dates and times:

Friday, Sept 23 - 8th grade night - we rehearse with the two MS bands, eat at around 5:15pm, dress, and all go over to stadium
Saturday, Sept 24 - Pride Day - Band in full uniform (minus sashes, gloves, gauntlets, and hats) - 8:30 am to noon
please help us out - every year, we have parents/students bring in refreshments - doughnuts, juice, napkins, cups, to get this thing started out right....as well as water bottles - for each student to take with them on their rounds.
Please step up and either buy a doz, etc., or talk Meijers, Walmart, or Krispy Kreme to donate some to this cause.
    Thanks.

    Tuesday, Sept 27 -rehearsal - CONTEST - 3-5 pm
    Friday,  Sept 30 - Homecoming
Saturday, Oct 1 - Westerville Central HS Band Contest
    Load at 11 am
    Leave at 11:30 am
    Perform around 1:15 pm
Back at school app 2:30 pm

A special thanks! goes to all the parents who have been helping out on the sideline and the back drop both Fridays and this past Saturday. The response has been tremendous! I hope you're having fun, for it sure looks like you are!!! And a big shout out to Bob Kotula for co-ordinating the back drop and to Tony Trubiani for being our truck driver and head.

See you on Friday or Saturday!

    Good Friday Morning Parents:
So far we have 101 students signed up for rooms for NY. Please encourage your young person to sign up If they have not already.

Contest, please try to attend. This will be the "world premier" of our show - never before presented in it's entirety! And if you can make it, please make alot of noise!!! The students enjoy that as they enter - just look for other Olentangy Parents. We perform at 6:15 pm.

Next Friday is 8th grade night. There will be app 70 extra band members, and it's always an exciting time. The other team is Marysville - not too far away, and if we continue in our winning ways - many people in the audience = WE NEED HELP IN THE CONCESSION STAND! Please try to come over and help, or contact Mrs. Karl or Mrs King (e-mails in previous updates).

Also, after my "shout out" for help driving, we had two more people volunteer. Thank you, you two, but we need about 30 more. Please contact Mrs. Wilson if you can do this - we need the money, and the more we make here, the less we need to raise selling pizzas, or cheese & sausage, etc.!

Also, all this is pending School Board approval...It won't come up for a vote until September 27th.

See you Friday and/or Sat! (GO BUCKS! Go Braves)

    M Lutz

PS - Could the "official" chaperons for the trip, please e-mail me back with the number in your party? (spouses) - I need this for rooming lists. Thanks.

    Good Monday Morning Parents:

First - a couple real needs:

This Tuesday night (3pm) we are attempting to rehearse with the back drops and staging...this is a must for this Sat's Contest. If you can help us out - even for a half hour (or more!)...please e-mail bob kotula at - bkotula@sygmanetwork.com

Next Saturday is Pride day, where we make app 7- 8,000 dollars in 3 hours (and its alot of fun, believe it or not). As of this writing, we have a total of 10 drivers (last year we had 34 and needed 40). Please e-mail Mrs Wilson at - wilsond@wcsoh.org if you can drive! This is the absolute best fundraiser we do all year, so please try to help us out!

Now to get back to this past week and the week coming up:

Friday the students were very cooperative and flexible at the restaurant, game, etc - we had to make changes on the "fly"(like on a trip), and it went fine. You can be proud of your young people.

Sunday we marched in the 20th Little Brown Jug Parade - less excrement than in past years, but just as hot and long. Again, The Olentangy students did themselves and our community proud, even tho Liberty was there - no fights LOL.

    Week coming up -
    9/13 - Tuesday rehearsal (CONTEST) - 3-5 pm
9/16 - Friday - game away at Big Walnut - eat at 5:15, leave at 6:15 pm return app 11 pm -
Uniform crew - leave them here for Saturday

9/17 - Saturday - Leave at 4 pm (band room open by 3:30 pm)
    Perform at 6:15 pm
    Awards at 7 pm
Return app 8:30 pm (or before)

    9/18 - Sunday - Nothing!!! enjoy!
    9/19 - Monday - NO SCHOOL

    Now a couple issues:

Please impress upon your band student that they MUST wear socks with their uniform - please don't make me go out and buy socks for your children...I don't even do that for my own! (they both in their 20's!). Black or blue and over the ankle. Also, please ask to see the shoes - many need polish before sat contest, please.

We are going to make an effort to have your student call you in a timely manner when we come back from a trip (away game, contest, parade) on a cell from the bus. Please make the same effort to pick them up. This past weekend, the directors waited a total of two and 1/2 hours (two trips) after arriving, waiting for parents. I don't want to whine, but we want to get going as well, so if there is a problem with transportation, maybe you can trade - you take, and another picks up. This would be greatly appreciated.

If I don't see you on Friday, then hope to see you on SATURDAY - make alot of noise!!!

    Parents:
Attached is the New York schedule. (it is in tiff format) This is a couple months old, and I have asked for a more specific and up to date one.

    New York Trip Itinerary (PDF)

I have also asked the name of the bus company (some of you were wondering).

    And hotel information: Sheraton Meadowlands
    2 Meadowlands Plaza
    East Rutherford, New Jersey 07073
    201-896-0500

We are planning a trip meeting after the music booster's meeting in October (10/10/05) in the band room to answer any questions, fill out any more forms, etc. If you have not paid the first payment, then we are assuming your child is not accompanying us on this trip. If they do plan on going, PLEASE get the check in ASAP (as soon as possible).

Well, at least it stopped raining! See you Friday for another Braves Victory!

    Good Monday Morning Parents:
Well, the first game is history (whew!!) Always fun- things come up that weren't anticipated, etc. But all in all it went very well. The band sounded as good as we know they could (some problem with that in the near past) and looked fine. Don't get me wrong...we've identified areas to concentrate on for the next week's rehearsals, so we can get better!

Now for this week: First home game= much to re-remember - pregame, Star Spangled Banner, Alma Mater, etc. And now the rain that's predicted - some have said 4-6 inches total for this week. We'll have a time practicing if this comes about. Please keep Thursday, Sept 1 from 3-5 free (will probably need this rehearsal if Tuesday is a wash out)...I know - sports, etc are excused when we have to call something like this with under two weeks notice.
This Friday will be in full uniform - the new people need their shoes - I have them, just need the payment. Please encourage your student to finally give me that check you wrote three weeks ago, and they keep forgetting to give me!!

Full uniform also means that the washing committee will need to pick up the uniforms and have them back by Friday morning (we leave for Lexington at 4:15 on Sept 9) - just a heads up.

New York - We are in the running to be invited to perform on the deck of the aircraft carrier Intrepid. When I know, you'll know. Any parent that is planning to go to New York when we do, but not as a chaperone, please contact Mrs Hageman at: HAGEE629@aol.com
She's going to be our co-ordinator for these parents.

And also a big shout out to all those who helped on Friday night - it went real smooth...now to plan on the London backdrop!

Pray for dry weather and for those in the South,

    M Lutz

Morning parents, Hope your home, etc., has stayed dry. Our field surely hasn't. We hope to get outside today (LOL), but at least by tomorrow. If you haven't heard, we have had to move tues rehearsal to Thurs. - any conflicts, the students are to go to their sport, etc ( I have given them less than two weeks notice - see, even I have to live by the Handbook!). I have talked to the frosh FB coach, and he said they won't leave until just before 5, so they can come to band for most of it.
This Friday will be our 1st home game, and our 1st time in full uniform. Alot of firsts and nerves will be frazzled. Then you add that we haven't gone through the show since last Friday night, and haven't done pregame since July, and you can see that nervousness will be the norm (esp for the staff!). But we have faith in your students. All will be well (I keep telling myself that).
    Three shout outs:

    1. Parents interested in folloeing the band to NY in their own bus...basically be with us in an unofficial capacity
    e-mail Brian Hagemann at - HAGEE629@aol.com

    2. September 24 (Pride Day) is fast approaching - If you can drive PLEASE e-mail Mrs Wilson at - Awils8@cs.com

    3. Bob Kotula needs help with handling the London Backdrop - If you can help (either fridays or Saturdays, or BOTH) please e-mail at:
    BKOTULA@SYGMAnetwork.com

Since we're on the subject - scheduel:
    September
    5 - No School
    6 - rehearsal - 3-5 pm
9 - leave at 4:15 for Lexington and dinner on way (provided) at Dutch Heritage Restaurant
11 - At HS bandroom BY 1:30 pm - Summer uniform - Little Brown Jug Parade; Return app 5:30 pm
12 - Music Boosters - OHS band room 7:30 pm
    13 - Rehearsal - 3-5 pm Contest Week !!! Practice with backdrop
    16 - FB @ Big Nut
